2025 Transfer Portal Thread

You're missing the mark with my post. I only used Knecht and Lanier as examples of high level offensive players who Barnes still demanded they play defense. Not trying to compare them, their ability, or their mindset for coming to Tennessee with Carr.

Your second paragraph is in line with my thinking, though. I just don’t understand why Carr thought his offense was enough to carry him thru to more playing time for Rick Barnes.
I think Cam Carr has the Ace Bailey Mindset. Look at how he's handling the draft and refusing to interview with teams, needing promises of starting spot and playing time. Some kids and families unfortunately have highly over inflated self evaluations that aren't tethered to reality.

Imagine growing up in a family where your father played in the NBA & even competed in a dunk contest with MJ. I'm sure the family has those expectations on seeing their son reach that pro level. And I think it's great to have family that believes in you and supports their children that much and that's partly why we see a lot of NBA players children making it to the league.
Unfortunately some bad decisions can be made when things don't go your way...

Ace Bailey is arrogant - but he's a beast. He will find a nice paycheck in the league for some time imo

Current roster and minutes breakdown (with all the obvious caveats):

Starters:
Gillespie - 30
Abram - 30
Ament - 30
Carey - 20
Okpara - 25
---
Rotation:
Boswell - 15-20
Evans - 10
Phillips - 15-20
Estrella - 15
---
Depth:
Massamba - 0-5
Brown - 0-5
Henderson - 0
---
Walkons:
Hurst - 0
Paull - 0
Duncan - 0

It's a good team and I'm optimistic about Boswell and Evans; SG moves Abram to bench as the 6th man and makes it an elite team.
If Ament is gonna play 30 minutes per game, there's a really good chance that he could hit the "freshman wall" halfway into the season unless he's superhuman. JMO

Yes CRB's reasons center around the Senior depth at Cam Carrs positions ahead of him: Jordan Gainey, Chaz Lanier, Jahmai Mashack & add the 34ish guard minutes by Zakai Zeigler - Cam Carr and his family truly felt that way... it's just their perspective and they know the majority of nba hype centers around incoming youth , not incoming 22-24 year olds... Cam Carr was on watch by NBA scouts and real intrigued by his skill set, offensive game, 2 way potential & especially his wingspan / measurements.

Defensively he was no where close to Gainey or Mashack at that wing spot & no way he's playing ahead of Lanier either...

So when they say "see him" - their perspective is the defense 1st took a major front seat to everything Cam Carr could have helped out with... this is just me seeing there perspective, so when they say 2 wasted years of eligibility - that means his youth is being spent without nba scouts having much to go off of or any good sample size against top ncaa competition.

He was primed to thrive here - but they were thinking let's get to a place where we can prove our worth sooner & get a bigger bag, more nil & nba draft stock.
I see their point of view & it's clear the Vol hoopers still support & love Cam...

I also understand why Cam will never be considered a VFL & why the coaches were upset. They were looking forward to his return... but if you remember even before he returned from injury coach Barnes publicly stated in an interview how there would be no guaranteed playing time for Cam Carr as he returned. That it would pretty much be a battle to get back into rotation as the SEC started. So him & his parents are thinking... OK let's retain this year and not have it all spent on the bench with already half of the year over with anyway. I see both sides. A family trying to play it smart & a coaching staff & fan base let down. The situation sucked!

Some seen Cam as NBA ready / offensively, some seen Cam as a backup to really good senior depth. Neither is wrong. We seen Justin Powell get nba time with the Cavs & do well at his other college stops due to his offensive skill set - however he wasn't Vol material defensively and that's no secret... sometimes it's about finding the right system & coaching style for you. And that's what a lot of these young people look for.
I understand it's not easy to navigate this as a parent or player but they screwed up.

We are somehow supposed to believe Cam is an NBA-level talent who was showing out in practice on offense but couldn't figure out how to give enough on D to earn more playing time?!? The most plausible explanation is he wasn't WILLING to do enough even though CRB has shown he will bend on his expectations for offensive talent (e.g., Knecht) and, as @cncchris33 pointed out, it is even more egregious given both Cam AND his family knew all about CRB's expectations on D before he ever agreed to come here.

The cold, hard truth is Cam had an oppy most players would kill for where he could have proved his worth on the nat'l stage for a Top 5 team trying to reach their first ever F4 (especially given some of our injuries late in the season) which would have gotten him a huge bag and much higher draft stock BUT he decided to quit instead. If I were a NBA GM, I would have serious doubts about both his skill and will...hopefully he learns from this and grows as a player and a person.

What’s the make and model for the rest of the team then?
Ament is the shiny Lamborghini you hope has retained its value after the first year. Gillespie is the Toyota Land Cruiser. It has been around long enough to know what you are getting and super reliable.
Carey is a Ford Super Duty. If its running well, it can get the job done but doesn't always show up ready to go. Okpara is a Dodge Ram. Tough but doesn't have some of the extras you wish you had that you see in other models.

And I…

Am probably a Prius 😂

Now that it’s probably safe to say we aren’t adding anyone else to our roster, i’m so curious who were those players we were trying to go after secretly? 🤔

I think it’s safe to say nobody on this board knows the answer. But interesting question.

I’m guessing nothing else to talk about since we are almost in July and have a glaring hole at the 2 spot still
Is there really that much of a glaring hole there? Between Clarence Massamba and Amaree Abraham, I like our options to find a a good lineup.
