2025 Transfer Portal Thread

He averaged 9 points 7 rebounds and 2 assists on 58% true shooting. I think that would be a pretty good return from Carey next season and would still result in a bunch of people like you on this board calling him a bum, but that’s the way it goes
He got almost 26 minutes a game.
That's a lot of time to get numbers for the year up. Igor was very inconsistent and unfortunately played some of his worst basketball late in the season. Teams never did actually in reality respect his 3- point shot because he was so inconsistent. They also weren't too worried of him blowing by them.
This is why we never really had a chance to develop an offensive with a stretch 4.

His defensive also wasn't that great despite what some people say. Late in the year, I can't tell you the amount of times I saw guys blow by him or him grabbing the jersey of the man he was guarding.
The guy's basketball IQ was not that great either, IMO.
He always looked hesitant and I can't count the number of times I saw him dribble back out to the top of the key or pass when he had a wide open lane to the basket if he would have just looked up/paid attention.
He had poor ball handling skills, too. That might be why he was hesitant in regards.
Saw him get his pocket picked on numerous occasions last year.

The guy helped us get to the NCAAT with a good seed, so I am glad for that. After we got there tho, really didn't give us much of anything.

Ask yourself this, would you want him back here next year as our starting 4?
I highly doubt many on here would say yes.

Okpara doesn’t get pushed around in my opinion. He plays a little bigger than he is, and is definitely more aggressive than Aidoo was at the same size.

If Estrella is healthy we are going to play some bully ball next year, especially with the addition of Carey. Phillips should be 225-230 by then too.

Personally, I thought Felix did pretty damn good at the 5 last year. Loved the way he runs the floor, and I noticed him improve pretty much the whole year. Hopefully that continues this upcoming year.

On offense he just need to work on not putting the ball on the ground/down low when he catches it so close to the bucket. I'm sure Barnes is going to work on him keeping the ball high and going up high with his shot ( ala Kevin Durant). Felix doesn't necessarily have to get an alley oop for him to high point the ball. Gillespie should be able to get him the ball where no one else can get it, and if he works on taking it right on up high and strong, he could develop him a nice little shot not too far from the basket.

As far as defense, the guy is a beast, IMO.
If he isn't actually blocking a shot, he is consistently causing players on the other team to have to alter their shots coming in.
Definitely glad he stayed around for next year!

Jp Estrella & Jaylen Carey are big boys. And we have not had a guy at 6'9" start at SF. Just saying, we won't have the same issues as we seen in the Houston game
Felix / Cade and JP / Carey..... Hopefully we'll be able to just keep rotating them in if we run into a team with bigs.
JP looked really damn promising IMO in that Purdue game. I know that was a long time ago now, but I have faith he will pick back up where he left off.

Incidentally, I think Barnes picked up Carey for one main reason ( I mean there are others of course), if you remember there were a few games last year where someone like Carey would come in and bully us/back us down into the paint and work us. Barnes alluded to this right about picking up Carey I just can't remember the exact interview. It was the one where he was talking about shoring up some weaknesses/being in a better position to play with all styles of basketball this year.

Agree. And offensively with all 4 of those guys healthy all year i could see it averaged out around 30 - 34 ppg among the 4 bigs sharing the scoring load. I just see it being realistic that they will share a lot of time and none of our bigs averaging a ton of points. But together all 4 of them could wear opponents down as they all have different superhero abilities that brings the team life in their own way. I see between 7-10 points each. This would be ideal for us and fun to see this productive depth at 4-5
Carey - 10p ish (11-9)
Okpara - 9p ish (10-8)
Estrella - 8p ish (9-7)
Phillips - 7p ish (8-6)

I know we’re planning on adding the “number 3” scoring option at shooting guard, but Carey could actually end up being that number 3 scorer if he continues to develop. It might not be a bad thing, and it would give us more balance inside/out.

Exactly. The second half of the Ole Miss game where Brakebill did that and turned that game around.

I loved Igor, not hating, and think he brought a lot…he had a really bad close to the year but was great in spurts, felt like there was always another gear and potential to go off. With that said inconsistency is the toughest thing for coaches to handle, they want to know what they’re going to get and you never did with Igor. Not sure what Carey will bring but being just a sophomore and posting comparable numbers in the same league is a nice start, the coaches said he was the best screener they saw all year so guessing they like how that’ll translate also, if nothing else it feels like a guy that will defend and rebound every single night.

We've said it before about a few guys, but more than anyone in recent years I really believe Igor would have gone to a different level with one more year in the system. It seemed to take him a while to get his feet under him, which he never really did at any point consistently, and we would only get glimpses of what he could be as a true 6'10" stretch four, but as it was he was a monster on the boards in many games and our best rebounder. We'll never know, but my guess is he would have been a different player with a year two here.

If Felix and Cade can develop some offense from 8 feet in, that would do wonders for this team. I’m talking about being able to score without dunking. Use the backboard. Develop some touch. I’m sure that’s being worked on.

It would be nice if Cade could add at least a fifteen foot jumper to his game. If he adds the fifteen foot jumper the next step would be a pump fake and one or two dribble drive.

I think our top 2 scorers are set in our pg & sf. But I think after that it will be balanced overall including starting at sg, i think we will get 9-10ppg on the season there similar to Carey

Depth is one reason we saw the frontcourt fade I think. Igor was the most obvious...but Felix and Cade as well

Felix got a bit of a 2nd wind, after SECT but he was worn down too

Last reg season game: South Carolina 17 minutes, 4 points, 1 rebound, 5 fouls

SECT Games:
vs Texas 4 points, 3 rebounds 1 block, 4 fouls
vs Auburn 0 points, 9 rebounds 5 fouls
vs Florida 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks, 4 fouls

But then in NCAA most fouls he saw was 3 against Kentucky. For the entire tournament 28 mpg, 5.8 ppg, 8 rpg, 1.3 bpg

Oddly enough despite getting less minutes in SECT seemed like Igor didn't get a 2nd wind in the NCAA

20.5 mpg, 4.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1 spg, 0.5 apg

And Cade's production didn't elevate enough to offset Igor's lack of it...

It's why we've got 4 legit bigs now with a stretch 4 option in Ament too.

Sounds like we could see 3-4 more additions before Summer semester starts.

Abram, Massamba, Felix's brother

4th option is Passmore but sounds a lot like ball is in his court. Would like to see all 14 filled...leave Felix's brother as PWO until the 15 limit goes through, then still have 1 spot free if 5th year passes in time for Gainey.

Also, why do people think Abram will start over Massamba? I know the vet v. freshman, but I don't know testing G-League with eye toward NBA does sound pretty indicative of an expected role. I like both, and one will be 6th man, but just saying that IF Abram starts that probably means he's a very good player for the level because otherwise you'd think it would be Massamba.
