2025 Transfer Portal Thread

I like Abram...former top 100 player, combo guard that's played both the 1 and 2 in college.

career 36% shooter from deep and in 2 of his 3 years he's taken over 100 3s and made at least 35 this past year he made 66.

12.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 1.7 apg and 1.5 spg... seems like a good Gainey replacement. A great 3rd option for scoring behind Ja'Kobi & Ament.

I think his stat is very bpm heavy.

That makes them a lot worse for college basketball than NBA cause good college players play a higher percentage of a games minutes.

But I still think they can be a useful tool so long as you are using some subjective analysis too
Whatever he uses should be re-examined. I recall him having Knecht as the 5th or 6th best player on our roster late in the season.

I remember. That’s what I mean by you gotta look at the data with subjectivity.

It basically means we were better with him off the court. And while that might be true from a +/- perspective, it doesn’t mean we were truly better.

When Knecht sat we went with a super defense heavy lineup that played with a glacier pace. It made the numbers weird for him IMO. It was like we had two different teams.

Abram career college stats per Sports Reference. The Georgia Tech season was anomalous for whatever reason + didn't see the floor a lot there. If you look at his college career as a trajectory however, he clearly performed best last season at La Tech. Shot 47% from 2, 37% from 3, started all 32 games, averaged 32 min and put up 12.3, 4.4, 1.7, 1.5 & 0.1 (pts, reb, assts, stls, blks). Granted that was against AAC competition which was nothing to scream about this past season apart from Memphis who was solid, but I think you have to see some potential in this get if it does indeed happen. It's the eternal question of how his play translates to the SEC, but consider that he started 22 games as a freshman at Ole Miss, putting up 8 pts, 2 reb and 2 assists in 21 min. Potentially Gainey'ish no? A summer at Camp Barnes and we might just have something. 🏀 🍊 🧡

A lot of this for me is, I’ll have to see it to believe it.

And I don’t mean that in a pessimistic way. Just that there are lots of variables.

Zakai manufactured a lot of points through running the offense and passing. Even beyond the stat sheet. He was easily worth 4 pts a game in passes or lobs that less than 1% of college point guards can or do make.

Okpara similarly, was a beneficiary of this. He got a lot of points that only happen because ZZ was the PG.

So on both those accounts I’ll just have to see.

Same with Ament. I need to see it before I believe he will be close to the impact of Lanier
Carey is far better than Igor imo

Carey is a brute and can score

Igor was a disappointment to me. Was supposed to be a streaky shooter

I would say that is what he turned out to be, no? If he had a fault it was an unwillingness to use his natural gifts
Honestly I'm not even sure if you could classify Igor as a streaky shooter at Tennessee. He turned down some open shots and wasn't a guy that was going to take 5 three pointers.

A streaky shooter to me, at least in my opinion would be someone like Skylar McBee. Can make a few here and there but Igor was just more of a glue guy imo. Did the small things right too

Y'all have different memories of Igor than me. I remember a player that was pretty bad the last part of season. No show almost the entire tournaments.

He was a disappointment at UT.
The invisible elephant standing in the middle of the room comment here.

He had his moments but collapsed the last part.

I'll never forget that Ole Miss blunder

Abram looks like he could at minimum be a good defender and someone who can reliably hit an open look. And he should get a lot of those.

At worst he gives you 10-15 minutes of scoring, backup primary ball handling and solid D off the bench. Might end up a top 10 two guard in the SEC at best.

I like his versatility and physicality. Hope we get the higher ceiling French kid to compete for minutes with AA and to back up Ament.

Yeah I wanted him to do more because he was 6’10” and could handle the ball, shoot pretty well, and get to the basket. My disappointment was that he wasn’t more assertive, he should have been our second scoring option after Chaz

I’ve never loved anything as much as he loved the ball fake

I imagine we will come out of this cycle with a decent bit of gas in the tank, I doubt Massamba and Abram even combine for Rice's offer. Slightly disappointing, but I can't even imagine how frustrating the cycle is from a coach's perspective. We got our main two guys (Ament and Gillespie), so at the end of the day, gotta rock with it and hope for the best.
I’d have to say Carey was a very solid addition too.

He drastically improved his free throw % while at La Tech. An 85% FT shooter will be valuable in late game situations.

Right and thanks for highlighting this, a huge stat that I didn’t include in my post. I think the hope is that a light came on for him at La Tech last season, and he’s primed to break out for the Vols if we do sign him.
