We’re absolutely in this. There are three apples. We’re the orange. If he chooses us, it is a distinctly different value proposition.
We have a set of donors who have agreed to fund this outside our existing budget. That gives us freedom to swing at this with no downside. In the last few days, Barnes did a call with his parents and a visit with Ament and them a second time. They included a plan to build his draft profile. Hard to overstate how much they like the idea of their son being here. They believe the pitch that we can increase his stock in the draft by developing his body, defense and pro skills. They have a whole pitch built around what they did for DK and Chaz. No one knows if we can weather a final push by Duke money, but we are still very alive. People keep saying he’ll take two more weeks to decide, but I think it will be much sooner. At least that is what staff believes from talking to him.
Ament will keep his given first name of Nate, and will not play QB no matter how much we pay him.Do you happen to know if that last visit was before or after all the Nico stuff? Since money is involved and Ament could be "considered" a Nico prospect , do you think that meeting might've been more about that? Or does Rick not really discuss that with family?
Rakease is a headscratcher for me, I mean shoot if he is the 4th best potential addition we get I am all in (Rice, Ament, and Freeman) but if he's coming as a contingency for any of those mentioned I'd be bummed, his stats are horrid.

He was a consensus top 50 recruit a year ago and UT offered him. He’s a great prospect. He wasn’t going to break into that rotation last year. Having Boswell and Passmore on your roster is the right profile for a four year player— strong tall guards who can cover 1-4 on defense and shoot over defenders. He’s a take, no question.I would love Passmore as a bench piece. He’s not going to start, but again we had depth issues on the team this year. If Passmore is the type of player you can bring off the bench for 10-15 minutes a game, that would be huge. Not to mention you’d still have him for several more years and he can grow here.
Passmore isn't a guy you necessarily want as the highlight of your portal class, but as the 4th or 5th best player you bring in, and likely on the cheap, you have a low risk/high reward proposition.Rakease is a headscratcher for me, I mean shoot if he is the 4th best potential addition we get I am all in (Rice, Ament, and Freeman) but if he's coming as a contingency for any of those mentioned I'd be bummed, his stats are horrid.
I don't think anyone has an issue taking Passmore as long as he isn't a Rice contingency plan.Passmore isn't a guy you necessarily want as the highlight of your portal class, but as the 4th or 5th best player you bring in, and likely on the cheap, you have a low risk/high reward proposition.
Tennessee liked him out of high school and he's got a frame and skill-set of a young Admiral Schofield, just with less opportunity as a freshman. And frankly, on a team with as much talent as Kansas, Schofield wouldn't have gotten much opportunity. Certainly not as much as he did for a Tennessee team with very little proven talent in Barnes's first year.
Certainly, and i don't think those two things are related. If we miss on Rice, there are plenty of more proven options to pivot towards with more experience than Passmore. If Rice is an 8 (on a scale of 1-10) in terms of impact, and Passmore is a 2, I don't think we just settle for a 2 by missing on an 8. With our budget and resources, that's really silly if you think about it. There will be other options. I read this as though Passmore is a take regardless of Rice because the expectations for each are so vastly different. Rice is expected to be a starter and a high impact player. Passmore is expected to be a depth piece with upside. If he ends up giving you more than that next year, all the better.I don't think anyone has an issue taking Passmore as long as he isn't a Rice contingency plan.

This is both a taller/longer team compared to last year plus some extra bulk with Carey and brown. Hopefully Barnes is able to close this week with these guys.Yep, I also want to see diversity and options for lineups. Adding another 6'5" athletic guard to come off the bench is never a bad thing.
Ja'Kobi is 6'
Bishop is 6'4"
Evans is 6'5"
Henderson is 6'
JP is 6'11"
Felix is 6'11"
Cade is 6'9"
Carey is 6'8"
Brown is 6'8"
Rice is 6'4"
Ament is 6'9"
Freeman is 6'8"
Passmore is 6'5"
That's a lot more length and variety if we can land them all... would give us the ability to go offensive at the 1-5 without losing much size in the process. I am also a big fan of having Carey and Brown on the roster together. Hopefully Carey becomes a mentor for him and helps him learn how to use his big body and size since 6'8" will mean facing some guys with more height.
Thanks so much for sharing this info, SF. The thought has occurred to me a number of times since the Houston loss: Rick's obviously not gonna be here for too much longer, and I would love if we could put the extra $$ and effort into building a team that is unequivocally one of the most talented in the country to give him an excellent shot at a Final Four. It sounds like the people who care most about the program agree, and they understand there are implications beyond Rick's time as head coach.Freeman and Rice fit within available funds, with room for other deals. We may also increase that budget if needed. The sentiment is that Barnes deserves the best chance of taking a team to an FF and that this would be very valuable to our brand and future. Several big donors support this idea and understand the current market pressure for great players.
