My hot take…

If he’s going to cost what it looks like it’s going to cost, and that severely limits what else we can add, I would prefer we pass. Much like what you said in your last sentence I definitely have a fear that he’s not sure fire dominant good, he doesn’t have the deal Flagg came in with, it’s as you mentioned more Phillips like but taller. Obviously if we land him I’ll hope to be wrong, but I just have that fear given his build, he also hasn’t been dominant in the last year against quality competition, and then our history with 5 stars and Barnes also.

Now if Pratt is willing to fund this campaign and Ament is saw as gravy on top of other pieces then I’m all for it, but if he keeps us from adding other all league type talents I think I would rather add 2-3 proven guys over just Ament.
It’s a tough call, and we aren’t the only team confused about what to do. Body development has become such a huge input. I love his decisiveness with the ball, but he is a developmental project and one year might not be enough. I was overconfident about Phillips and proven wrong.

You beat me to it. The Phillips comp is cautionary but real, and given how tough Barnes is with what he expects if you're going to get PT, it sometimes doesn't mesh with a one-and-done situation coming in as a freshman who needs work on his body and game adjusting to SEC competition.

If we are able to bring in Rice and Carey to go with Gillespie, Okpara, Cade, and hopefully JP, another scoring wing and guard would be the primary needs, and if the cost of Ament is going to prevent us from adding more depth pieces, maybe we need to think twice.

@Stoerner Fumbles I believe it was you that said we gave Ament and Rice some kind of timeline/deadline with the offer we made. Can you give any ballpark on when we should have some movement, good or bad, on those fronts?

PG: Gillespie / Henderson
SG: Rice
SF: Atwell / Evans
PF: Ament
C: Okpara / Carey / Cade / JP / Brown

If you can get Atwell and maybe another guard that can back up Rice and Atwell for a discount then I feel like Ament would be a no brainer.

If we don’t play the 5 center lineup at least once, I’ll be sorely disappointed

Ament is particularly light for his frame and height, but we see him at the four primarily. Obviously we use the four in different ways in different lineups and matchups. He has a nose for reading defense and scoring no matter what he’s given. Great to see the instinct to read quickly at that height. He has a quick release or action to drive. The risk is a Julian Phillips scenario where he doesn’t really come into his own in time to take over a game before he leaves.
I wouldn’t compare those two..

Ament is on another level as a prospect.. His skill set gives him the ceiling to be an NBA All star and a Jason Tatum like impact in college.. His floor is probably at least a 10-12 ppg guy for one year in college just due to his feel and natural skill to score the basketball…

Phillips ceiling was never more than an NBA role player off the bench at best. And the floor was obviously what we saw. Just a great athlete who had minimal skill for scoring the basketball and was never able to find his way offensively.

I’m late to the party so I’m sure it’s been discussed but his film reminds me a whole lot of KD in style, frame, and temperament. He flourished under Barnes. I’m sure Ament would as well.

Word is that Gillespie is actively trying to recruit some help from the target list. People want to play with what's considered the top guard in the portal. I just know he has been texting some people.
That was what Kennedy Chandler was trying to do as he was being recruited. I don‘t recall any influence he had over any in our class. My opinion is that transfers may, or may not, be swayed by a recruiting pitch from their peers. In the end, I would say it rarely happens.

I understand that they’re different by player. Carey could be today/tomorrow if all the academic stuff reads as clear. With Ament, I think it’s very short now/never thing. Rice is ongoing and we weren’t at offer terms last night. The goal is to finish anything we can before the 10th when dead period ends.

Again Ament is clearly a cut above Julian Phillips.. Silly to compare those two.. Ament has the ability to better than any remaining player on our transfer board as a freshman. And actually I would project that.

Are we really debating whether or not to take a top 5 prospect???
I think the debate is centered on whether getting Ament prevents getting other pieces, namely shooters. If it doesn’t prevent that, then I don’t think there’s a debate. If it does, then the cost of getting Ament may not be worth it, given the position he plays.

Similar in the instinct to score and push action— with the caveat that Durant is a once in a coaching career player and Ament is a once a year player.

Maybe in hindsight, but Phillips was a top 20 player with a 99 composite rating, and a light frame. I’ve seen Ament live and he’s going to have some growing pains. C

Ament is better than Phillips but let’s not act like Phillips was a complete dud. He showcased his athleticism/scoring ability and dealt with a wrist injury that year if I recall correctly

No, Phillips was a complete dud.

Top 15 HS kid that gave you 8 & 5 in 24 minutes.

JJJ had better numbers as a Freshman & people constantly complained he was a bust.

Keon & Springer both scored more than JP too in their one year campaigns. Julian is probably the biggest miss we’ve seen for a 1 & done. Not a bad season, but well below expectations for what was spent to land him.
