2025/26 Transfer Portal Thread

last years defense was the outlier. overall not good on that side of the ball.

unless you have legit insider knowledge, i'm buying that Knowles came here because of our current talent. we are small and slow. i have major concerns about him if that's why he is here.

i don't have a problem with Herring or any of those other guys but none of them have done enough to get to upset about them leaving.

Herrring leaving seems like he doesn't fit, they are bringing in more guys and he's scared of the competition, or wanting more money.
And here you go doubling down.
The defense improved every year until 2025.
But Banks lack of operational expertise is what got him fired.

We had the nucleus of a good defense and he literally almost did nothing to improve on it.

insider?? Banks was a coach! He couldn’t have been more “inside” and he got fired.

Just listen to what I’m trying and to tell you and stop being so damn hard headed!

Knowles could have went almost anywhere, but came to Tennessee. For a bear cupboard???
No!

our defense is longer and bigger than Indiana’s defense. We had bad fundamentals and a coach who was waaaay in over his head. That’s it!

We have bears on the team?

With roster limits expanded and scholly limits pretty much accounted for, big opportunity for Heupel to make the portal his ally by being aggressive and having a sense of urgency. He does this and it becomes a strength, instead of becoming a victim of it like last season. He got very lucky to get the guys he did late in the cycle and have them largely work out (hood, thomas, Pendleton, moe). We might not have been bowl eligible without them. I trust the staffs evals and I hope they go out and get all the veteran guys they need to weather injuries and finish games next year that they couldn’t this year.

PORTAL NEEDS (updates as we hear of current roster developments):

1. Multiple Interior DL (preferably both a nose tackle and DT type)
2. Defensive End (who is replacing Tyre West and Dom Bailey?)
3. Multiple Safeties (at least one immediate starter would be nice - especially so with Knowles in fold. Look for multiple transfers at this position to pair with farooq)
4. Veteran Qb (to push competition for the starting job - if JA does not come back)
5. Multiple CB and/or Star - be curious how Knowles recruits the defensive backfield, expecting more safety types than corners, but the corners must be top flight as they will be required to cover man down field or crash the line and tackle on any given play)
6. LB Probably will let Knowles look for a veteran LB to replace Carter and help install his defense. They like the rest of the room I believe. Underperformance this year was most due to pressure put on them from a bad DL front (scheme-wise - thanks Timmy B) and poor safety play (thanks again Timmy). This in addition to his LEO (is this player on roster?) and center field safety (and other DBs) will be primary targets.
7. OT (if Heard goes pro)
8. C/OG (if moe/pendleton go)
9. RB (with Lewis transfering out)
10. Punter (if Turby doesn’t come back for rs senior year)
11. Kicker (if they determine Max is damaged goods)

As confident as I’m sure CJH is in our young guys, I will be concerned if we take less than 8-10 10-12 13-15 portal players across the various needs we have. Any less and I’ll be worried we’re a couple injuries away from another 8-5 or worse season.

Current Roster on Scholly Transferring Out:

QB Jake Merklinger
RB Peyton Lewis
WR Amari Jefferson
OT Lance Heard
OL Max Anderson
OT Bennett Warren
DL Trevor Duncan
DT Jamal Wallace
DE Kellen Lindstrom
Edge Caleb Herring
LB Brendan Anes
CB Rickey Gibson
DB Marcus Goree
DB Colin Brazzell
ATH Boo-Hoo carter

**Note** A pundit (don’t remember which, probably AP) said word was we would lose a lot to the portal this year, but that initial word was not many would be ones we’d be sad to see go, similar to last year. That would be good news if we capitalize and fill the roster with upgrades at positions that experience attrition. Bad news if we don’t. Let’s not get too off track lamenting over development. That’ll be $9.95

Confirmed Notable Losses to Draft/Grad:

QB Joey Aguilar (?)
WR Chris Brazzell
RB Star Thomas
TE Miles Kitzelmann
DE Tyre West
DL Dominic Bailey
DT Jaxon Moi
DT Bryson Eason
Edge Joshua Josephs
LB Arion Carter
CB Jermod McCoy
CB Colton Hood
CB Jalen McMurray
S Andre Turrentine

^Basically half the starting roster.

VISITS

S Qua Moss Early Jan 4th Weekend
DT Mateen Ibirogba Jan 4th Weekend
LB Keaton Thomas Jan 4th Weekend
RB Hollywood Smothers Jan 4th Weekend
RB Cam Cook Jan 4th Weekend
S Tawfiq Byard End of Jan 4th weekend
EDGE Chaz Coleman 2nd Week of January
Sounds like you can add DL Xavier Gilliam and LB Khmori House to the visit list (without dates, yet)

I’ll be surprised if Leavitt actually ends up there. You are gonna go in with a no contact tag to end up at UK? Just stay at ASU at that point.
Maybe he's worried about injuries and his possible future in the NFL, looking to cash in while he still can
