2025/26 Transfer Portal Thread

JMO, but I don't think we get a "big name" at QB. Costs too much. We'll get a second-tier guy, someone kind of like Aguilar.
If he can throw the deep ball like Joey A and won’t randomly lob it partially downfield into the breadbasket of the other teams safeties, I’m all for it.

I'll be be absolutely shocked if he starts. Heupel isn't going to risk a 7-5 type season after the year he just had. Next years schedule is not what you wanna throw a young QB at. And he and his camp are fine with this. We get a 1 year portal QB, then in 27 GMac/Faizon battle it out.
So you know for a fact that if GMac starts we are gonna go 7-5 or 6-6? That’s some sound logic 🙄🙄🙄

So how I see it

A.) bring in a High level guy and kick the can down the road. We will have the same conversation about how we can’t go into the 27’ schedule with a QB with little PT and No startinf experience.

B.) bring in a Joey Aguliar type cat who will compete. If he wins the job so be it but if G-Mac/ Frazion wins the Job then that guys the Experienced back up who can come in if the lights are to bright for them. Think the Simmons to Chambliss situation

C.) or accept the Growing pains as a 1st year starter and circle 27’ as the year thay we get back to compete at the highest level.

This is obviously assuming Joey can’t return.

I’m rooting for B to happen but I also don’t think Josh Will be or should be fired next year unless the wheel fall off completely like Penn state this year. If you truly believe that Josh will be fired at 8-4 than I get wanting option A

Could go 7-5 with a QB out of the Portal..... Fans need to relax, to many must win now fan bases in College Football...
Will the right qb like Joey we make the playoffs if the defense gets it together. Teams that have a solid base and invest In their roster can make the playoffs. Vandy just did it and got screwed by the committee. A&M and ole miss, we did it if our defense didn’t lay an egg. There is zero reason not to raise money for a one year portal guy. We are paying guys like faizon to wait if they aren’t ready. It’s not like it was 5 years ago.

I just don’t think Joey can get us to the playoffs. He is a good QB, but makes too many costly mistakes with his less than average arm strength.

His arm is not less than average. I think your judgment is clouded after having Joe and Nico lol

Also, yeah let's just discount the countless big plays he made. It would be STUPID to not want him back for a second year in the offense. Especially when we have seen how guys improve in their second years with Heup. Yeah I get he had bad TO's, but its ridiculous how many low opinions there are of him when he had an all time season for a vol qb....after getting here in May.

JA made a throw with pressure in his face on a 50 yard rope on a post to Brazell a few games ago which proved again he has plenty of arm. His inaccuracy on short passes outside the hashes and tendency to go high at times on medium passes across the middle are his issues but he can make the ladder throws fine.

We have to get faster and more athletic in the back 7. He’s not getting more athletic or faster in year 4. He’s too slow to play LB in the league.
Well we said similar stuff about Nigel Warrior and Jaylen McCullough, so you really never know. If he becomes a smarter player then that changes everything.

He cost us two games with interceptions and fumbles. He throws the ball into double coverage and undertows wide open receivers. He was better than Nico and was better than the two we had on the team who had little to no experience

Could also go 10-2 with the right QB. Will be a huge portal season for us at QB and on the defensive side. I see zero chance that GMac nor Faizon will be ready to run the offense next year. I could be wrong and it definitely wouldn't be the first time. I will be shocked if we don't go 2+ million on a 1 year portal QB. Obviously has to be the right one, but there's going to be tons of options it appears.

Best deep ball completion percentage in college football. He throws deep balls like that for a reason.

Yeah he's a gunslinger, he takes a couple more risks than you like, but he was also throwing the ball exponentially more than past QB's and over the middle more often than every other Heupel QB. Why? Because he's the smartest QB we have had under Heup. He also dealt with the worst run game we have had under Heup, let alone a ton of drops. Costly turnovers are horrible, but he made a ton of plays that put us in position to be a playoff team this season and I think would have been if he had a better run game and an actual defense.

I say take a chance on this guy. Likely won't run off the others and could turn out to be extremely good. Probably get him cheap too.
Apologies. This is just happen stance that you had to post this. And our history isn’t very good.

Regardless,

We all get caught up with “untapped “ potential and the “unknown “ and we label the kid as the answer while the answer literally just signed.
Faizon Brandon

How do I know?

This kid and Faizon Brandon faced each other all through HS. As a matter of fact Brandon is undefeated against him.
This kids last game of his career (State Championship 2024)
298 yards 3 TDs and 2 Ints

Brandon 180 yards (8 of 10 passing) 2 TDs 1 INT
47 yards rushing 1 TD

Grimsley RB rushed for over 150 yards so Brandon didn’t need to really throw all over the place. Still passed at 80 %

Atkinson won’t come to Tennessee because he can never beat Faizon Brandon.

I'm on the other side of this. We won't go 4+ million on one, but I can definitely see 2+ million thrown at the right one. Heupel and White know they have to spend more in the portal this year. We went after Altmyer and Becht last spring and both would have cost 2.5+million to get. Even 3+ million was thrown around as potential numbers to get one of them. So they aren't locked in to second tier guys, Aguilar was basically the best available in the Spring Portal. The Adidas contract coming up will help with that. He can't go 7-5 or 7-6 next year or his seat will start warming up.

In a perfect world Joey would come back and not have to worry about it.
Unfortunately Heupel can't afford to wait that long, just to have him not be eligible then get nobody. Definitely not a decision I'd wanna make. If Aguilar's decision goes past the portal closing, no way they can sit back and hope, just to not get anybody. Regardless, we will bring in a QB, just a matter of which tier he's in
