2025-26 Bowl Games, will they be more irrelevant than ever with expanded playoffs?

With expanded playoffs, what is everyone’s opinion about bowls? Frankly, I see bowls evolving in the same manner as the NIT for basketball. As more teams were added to the NCAA playoffs, the less the NIT mattered.

it will be worth it to teams participating in a specific bowl.. exposure and make some money without spending any...

I thought most schools lost money on the bowls with smaller payouts, which I would think the payouts would go down given their lack of relevance.

I can't say for certain how it works now but in the past UT made some money off bowls. Not a lot in the scheme of things but it certainly covered the expenses. things certainly could be different now.

With the playoffs expanding they become more irrelevant in the overall scheme but will still be a nice reward for a lot of teams who will be happy to get another game and some TV time.

My question is how long can some these lower tier bowls keep going with sponsorships and tv $ if tv ratings drop.

Bowl games became irrelevant when the BCS started.

Don't get me wrong, it can be a treat for the players getting one more showcase game and the gift bags and maybe a nice trip, but you already know that your not playing for a National Title.

If the funds can cover the costs, then paid practices and a trip with swag for the kids is always a good thing. Especially so for those mid tier lower tier schools, where they are not going to have a lot of guys who are looking to get drafted.

IMHO...
Each year's National Champion in college football is something that should NOT be settled on the field.

It should be argued and debated for generations. THAT's how you build tradition and tribal pride into a sport, and make it part of the American culture. Every person should have their opinion on who was the best team in any given year, instead of simply being asked the next day, "Did you watch it?"

Nah.

Every other sport disagrees with you.

My contention is that college football is different from every other sport. It certainly used to be, and I'm not hearing anyone say it is becoming more attractive. But just my opinion.
I agree. It used to be different. Over the last 3 decades they slowly been eroding the game we knew where it was left to the voters. There was a certain charm to it, albeit flawed (IMO).

I was once near crucified on here when I said we have to many $hitty bowls. Good riddance if bowling green isn’t playing Texas st in the OF premium subscriber bowl

I always wanted Swisher to sponsor the “Toilet Bowl” with two of the worst teams in college football. The trophy could be a golden toilet bowl with the tagline that “somebody’s gonna win”.
Love it, except maybe Somebody's gotta win lol

I’m always wondering why it bothers people if 2 teams are playing a bowl game in Nassau or Fenway at 11am on a Thursday around Christmas? You don’t have to watch, but it’s free, no pressure college football. Why do you want it gone?

low level bowls have been dead for years with the players sitting out. Good PT for younger guys and extra practice is the good of it.

It's not just low level bowls with players sitting out. Look at who sat out of the Orange Bowl for both UT & Clemson in '22.

Anyone watch any of those "lesser" bowls last year?
As a pure college football fan I did and some of those games were not pretty as far as attendance.
I get it, a lot are probably getting most of their revenue from broadcast rights, but some of them couldn't have had half the stadium filled...you know, that stadium that only seats about 30 to 40K to start.

The other point that is brought up is extra practice. With the portal the way it is now though, how much do you really gain with that extra practice?
You think Heupel would have practiced Nico with the 1s if he knew then what he knows now?...probably not.

IMO - take the traditional top 8 or 10 bowls and assign a playoff game to each.
All.the other teams that become bowl eligible get extra practice, BUT not in the fall...it gets tacked onto the start of next year's start.

It’s bizarre how people act offended about exhibition games. And I have no idea why some act like bowl games just became irrelevant yesterday? Before the Bowl Coalition, there were 2-3 games tops that really mattered. The BCS took that down to one 27 years ago. The CFP took it back up to 3 and will now expand that even more.

What is there to complain about?

Bc there’s always something to complain about. People don’t like perceived change.
