2024 Transfer Portal Thread

I just cannot fathom how we didn’t see this coming. Seriously. It’s the transfer portal in the NIL era for one of the top guards in the entire portal. It’s honestly baffling that our staff could think they could pursue any of the elite of the elite talent and think it won’t turn into an NIL battle. Is our staff really that naive still about NIL?

I also feel like this staff has reportedly been caught off guard by NIL in other recruitments in year’s past as well, so how have we still not learned to be prepared for an NIL war to breakout in any high level recruitment.
Maybe because we didn’t have this problem with Knecht. It’s a similar player profile. High scorer at a very low profile school. Going off those assumptions you’d believe that there wouldn’t be a bidding war creeping up close to 2 million dollars. In any case we will be fine either way. We will get somebody else good that we won’t overspend for. That’s what these programs and coaches are doing right now too is over reaching and over paying. I’m not mad about it. This guy has went from somebody I want on the team to somebody I don’t want anywhere near the team. He’s just going to the highest bidder and it is what it is. Time for our coaches to get back to the drawing board and figure out another player who they expect to be as good or better than Lanier. I trust Barnes and company to figure it out. After the year we just had and everything he’s accomplished here I think that he and his assistants have earned our trust.

Absolutely inexcusable.

Going to be stuck with a few extra scholarships and a bucket getter short of a title contender. Misplayed badly. And I love Barnes, not a nega. But this is a missed opportunity if it goes sideways.
I’m not conceding or anything, but if this does go south, the problem was not having a plan B.

As I said a week or so ago, Lanier has played this (and Tennessee, as it may turn out) perfectly.

Play the long game, drive up your value while others are committing elsewhere, then just when everyone thinks they have the answers, change the questions.
Maybe there was a deadlock where Tennessee is the better opportunity but Kentucky promised to pay more. So the agent decided to triangulate.

Does anyone know how the NCAA changing its rules to require graduate players to enter the portal by final portal deadline came about? I can't find much about it, and the couple of articles I found call the change things like "quietly" and "unexpected."

Do you hear yourself?
Teams are fighting just to get into the field.
Some teams expect to get out of the first round, while others are praying they do.
A few teams are thinking, sweet sixteen here we come .. but Kentucky did not make the field of 16 ... again in 2024.
A handful of teams, have legitimate dreams of making the elite 8 ....
I always set the bar low each season ... and then work my way up as the team shows what they can do ... goals are only good ... if they are realistic enough to drive you to improve. Smoke and mirrors really sets yourself up for disappointment and failure.
Visualization on the other hand is exactly for the purposes of getting the juices flowing and making a plan.
Do you hear yourself? The team plays to win every game. The goal is to be champions. Expectations and goals are not the same thing. If we're fielding a team without the goal to win it all, we've already lost. Have to have that hunger to chase it all.

“Still a chance he visits” sounds less than promising.

I get why he’s interested in BYU. Former Suns guy, probably think he can get him ready for the NBA better than most, plus he will get more money at BYU then he would here.

Honestly, from his perspective that’s probably his best option.

Us arguing between money and development, well he can get both there.

Former NBA guy + playing time + money = An overall good choice.
