2024 Transfer Portal Thread

lol at Bronny James making that list. Nepotism is a hell of a thing.
or they let him go to put it all to rest.....Most of the top guys are not gonna work out or in some cases even show up. Bronny will bring interest to the event. It's a good business decision by the NBA. From what I've seen Bronny is not NBA talent at this point. But, the kid did a hell of a job for someone recovering from a heart attack his freshman year. Cut him some slack. It's not like he's a bad kid. He has always come across as a team player and grounded. Hatew Lebron or nepotism all you want but I have no issue with him getting a shot. Don't have to worry about him getting caught stealing Raybans...

That’s not the point there are plenty of guys who are actually deserving to be on that list and have to take a backseat because of him..

It has always been the case that beauty (or in this case ability) is in the eyes of the beholder. And there's always bias in everything. So, suck it up. Buttercup. As I frequently tell my daughter, " Amateurs practice till they get it right. Professionals practice till they never get it wrong. So, keep perfecting your craft, honing your skills, adding to your array of talents, enhancing your vocal skills and keep getting better. All the time."
And to Chaz, as we say, "Come On Down!"

I can’t stand big govt but someone has to step in and get a handle on this portal mess. College athletics will lose great coaches This will give younger coaches an opportunity but I hate to see college athletics become so tainted.
Well, it was always tainted due to its illegal labor practices and now we have to live with the fallout of a decades old monopoly which was propped up by the corrupt academic institutions so they could enrich themselves and by us fans because we wanted to be entertained by by a nostalgic illusion of "amateur student athletes" competing against one another.

It's not just the portal--and the portal plus bribery offers. It's the money that driving the transfers--not just the portal itself.

What's ironic about NIL, now that it's been corrupted by absurd money offers, is that very few people will buy any merch with player name/image/likeness anymore--which was the original purpose of NIL. Good players will not stay at a school long enough to justify any player merch sales.
Please explain exactly how money being paid to players are "bribes" and the NIL laws are somehow being corrupted by it (hint: you can't because these are irrational thoughts not grounded in reality).

And I'm still waiting for your reply to this as well:

What "illegal labor practices" are you referring to? I'm keen to know.

As for "corrupt institutions enriching themselves," most of the money goes to enhancing the athletic product by modernizing stadiums--a continuous process at majors--and building/modernizing facilities for all the other sports. And the money goes to subsidizing 15 or so non-revenue sports. There seems to be this notion that large numbers of university officials are driving around in fancy cars and smoking cars while the athletes suffer. That's total nonsense. The only individuals who have got wealthy of football and basketball are the head coaches. Who else?

Hyper-competitiveness and ridiculously crazy fans have driven the growth of programs--which are always trying to either keep up with or surpass their competitors with better facilities, larger staffs, a bigger recruiting budgets, etc. It's all an insanely weird part of American culture. No other university systems in the world elevate sports to anything even remotely close to this kind of madness for COLLEGE sports. It's also a part of American culture then when something is successful, nobody ever wants to say stop, enough. It's all spun wildly out of control.

You have a tendency of supporting your crazy theories by inventing an imaginary counter-position. No one implied that anyone is “driving around in fancy cars” etc. TV networks, advertisers, hotels, restaurants, towns, and universities all made money by selling the illusion of the purity of an amateur sport. The “talent” was left out while creating most of the value. It was a con. The “money” does not all go to building facilities. It enriches all the constituents I listed. It was a multibillion dollar racket that paid everyone except the kids who invested years of work and preparation and in many instances lost years off their lives.

You are leaving out an important basic of NIL. Someone can do a commercial and never sella single piece of merchandise. They get paid for the ad and can make real money from that. Players could have made good on that. I don't disagree it has been twisted to do more, but don't think NIL was just some tshirts.

Yeah, thinking about all those kids like Inky Johnson (for example) who nearly gave his ALL.
