2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Why are we talking about minutes and things that aren’t a problem right now?? lol. Let’s just get the guys first, let them figure it out, and then if somebody wants out let it happen. It is what it is, but right now I want all of them if we can get them. Tyson, Igor, Okpara, and Lanier(who is my personal favorite).

Probably because there isn’t anything else to talk about until someone actually commits lol.

Fair, but Mashack is more than capable starting @ the 3 while ZZ & Lanier run the primary guard positions... Lanier is a proven shot creator and can help Zeigler the way Vescovi had done... Tyson can't provide us what Lanier can. And Gainey coming off the bench to relieve ZZ & Lanier. I could see that working out... I honestly hope we get Lanier personally he is much more of an overall go-to guy who fills Vescovis absence...

And we all know Mashack can run positions 2-4 while Dubar gets 3-4 run while Cam Carr can play 2-3 but also potential help at the 4 with his 7'1" wingspan if he gets in on small ball lineups...... We are looking at a position-less team. I see far too many downplaying Boswell's potential at finding pt - I just go back to ZZ committing & my first thought was "redshirt." And we know Bishop can play D so we never know what can happen there....

If we can get 6'10" Igor + 6'4" Chaz Lanier & obviously tomorrows B🍊🍊M of 6'11" Felix Okpara - I don't care who else we get... That's a loaded squad...

If we get Tyson and Not Lanier - we have less ball-handlers and shot creators ...imo ...

therefore Igor - Okpara + Lanier my 3 wants without a doubt
Without seeing both Tyson and Lanier beyond clips really hard to tell who is a better shot creator. I'll concede Lanier may be a better 1x1 player as he is a better athlete based on clips but will that turn into a quality shot? He was efficient last year to be sure and had a massive increase in production. Tyson is a fluid athlete and he can put the ball on the deck, pull up mid-range and isn't afraid to go to the rim. Extremely efficient as well for two years in a row. If teams play guards on him he can rise above them or post them up. They go big, he can drive. I think he has 3 level skills and is versatile. Lanier shot a much higher % of his shots from behind the 3 pt line than Tyson. 57% to 47%, so Tyson isn't exclusively a perimeter shooter which seems to be the perception about him, nor is Lanier a guy who attacks the rim all the time. At 6'7 and a decent lift on his jumper, and pretty quick release Tyson probably will have an easier time getting his shot off from the perimeter in the SEC in my opinion. Lanier (6'4) has a quick release but it is VERY low and kinda worries me a bit. Granted he had a handful of good games against high majors last year, so I may be overly concerned. Lanier was primary scorer at North Florida by far and I wonder how ball dominant he was. Does he need to ball in his hands to be at his best? The more often he has the ball in his hands means the less often it is in Zeigler's hands. I don't think that is an issue with Tyson. Tyson actually shot fewer shots per game than either Dia and Gillespie as they shared the scoring load. If he was primary scorer at Belmont he would have averaged over 20 per game easily, in a better conference. Can't dismiss Tyson would have 2 years left of eligibility as well and I think he has a big upside.

I get why some would prefer Lanier but I tend to like Tyson for several reasons. Best scenario is we get both and let Barnes figure it out and keep everyone happy. We know he is being honest with everyone. At least one of them is almost a necessity, because either of them is likely our leading scorer next year.

Lastly, I have a ton of confidence in Mashack more than filling the void of Vescovi at 2G without question. It's not as if Vescovi scorched the nets last year. 6.3 pts per game at a below average overall shooting %. (36.8%). I liked Vescovi but Mashack can surpass those points, is a better defender, is better off the bounce, has a better mid-range game and even (although much lower shot volume) at least last year had a better 3 pt FG % than Vescovi. Mashack filled in admirably as a ball handler last year when Zeigler got injured so I don't have any significant concerns in ball handling, when Zeigler needs a rest. Gainey likely will remain the primary backup PG. And while we haven't posted our guards much since Springer, Mashack gives you that option too unlike Vescovi. Regardless of what happens in the portal I would like Mashack to get a chance to start at the 2 or the 3. He deserved to play more minutes than he did this past year.

He played the 4 exclusively at Belmont. You think he could guard Estrada at Bama? He would have too if he played the 3 exclusively. That would be a major mismatch imo.
He wouldn't play the 4 as much at UT. Why would Barnes sign Dubar (combo forward who probably leans more as a 4 than a 3), and be so aggressive trying to sign Milicic who is more of a 4 than a 5? That's alot of 4's, who will get minutes not even counting Phillips. Barnes wants Tyson as a 3 primarily in my opinion. Plus, we lost a ton of offense production last year that needs to be replaced. Tyson can definitely score at an efficient rate which he has proven over 2 years and he still has alot of upside.

And defensively, could he guard Estrada? Nope, not based on initial impressions as he is a tough matchup for just about anyone. He couldn't guard Sears either. But who else is on the floor? Mashack can guard '24 Estrada, Zeigler can guard Sears and Tyson could guard either Griffen or Wrightsell, both of whom shot high # of 3 pointers and easier to guard. Much like this past year with DK, we aren't going to put him on the opposing team's best scorer. If Barnes didn't think he was a fit for his no nonsense approach on the defensive end of the court, he wouldn't be recruiting him as hard as he is. Vescovi wasn't much of a defensive player when he first arrived at UT and it didn't take him long to earn his stripes. Tyson could be a very complete player on both ends his senior year.

Agree on that. Have to love not only the 3pt shooting ability of Lanier, but also his penetrating ability. We would be so well rounded with his addition.

Lanier and Dubar both have weird shots. Dubar’s release is awkward and looks slow to me

I’m sorry. I’m sure it’s been answered but I’ve not got time to find it or watch film to figure it out:
Is Igor a 4/5 or a 3/4 kind of guy?

Agree to disagree. Valid points, but reasonable minds can differ.

One of UNCs posters said “big time news incoming” last night around 8

Guess we will see very soon. Hopefully it’s just RJ returning
With the talent the have and bring through that program, would a transfer like Tyson really move the needle like that? At UT, we'd go nuts and respond like drunken sailors. At UNC, they'd yawn and politely clap at a transfer from Belmont.

Could be a big day. Okpara is visiting and could commit. Anyone heard what Igor's, Tyson's, and Lanier's time lines are? May 1 is approaching fast!
I might be wrong here, but I believe the May 1st is only a deadline to enter the portal. I believe you don't have to sign to a new team by then though. Like I said I might be wrong on that.

You're correct, but a lot of transfers try to commit to their new school by then too so they can enroll for summer semester and be here for the first workouts.

April 27th = NBA Early Entry Eligibility Deadline
May 1st = last day to enter the portal (unless you're a graduate transfer)
May 13-19 = NBA Combine
June 16th = NBA Draft Early Entry Entrant Withdrawal Deadline
June 26th = NBA Draft Day 1

Won't really impact us this year, since none of our players are going through the process but usually before the Combine you'll have a good bit of guys withdrawal from the draft as the bulk of the evaluations happen as the NBA folks select combine participants.

Thought the same about Dubar, but if it's working, don't try to fix it. Didn't notice Lanier tho. Won't take teams long to get a scout on both those guys. It will be interesting to see if the funky shots continue to work in this league against better athletes.
