2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Zeigler is still your PG, Okpara has better defensive numbers than Aidoo and that was on a worse team. Mashack’s numbers were right up there with Santi and JJJ, so wash their 1/1. So that leaves you 2 spots, let’s say Igor & Lanier comping to Santi and Knecht. As I’ve already shown Igor was a better defender than Knecht coming to Knoxville and he’s got 4” on him and is a plus athlete for a 4, I would say it’s not unlikely to say he’s a better defender than Knecht, he already was at each players previous school. So Santi vs. Lanier, Santi obviously gets the edge but again in the system with 4 other plus defenders he can likely be masked.

Do I think we are likely a Top 2-3 defense? Probably not, but I’m willing to bet we will be just fine on that end of the court.
Floor gonna be wide open with two 6’10 guys on the court

Defensive lanes stuffed

Program’s all time steals leader is an “unathletic average defender” as labeled by some of our fans? Hard to make sense of the stats versus the perceptions.
All time leader in steals is not the same as steals per game etc... Zeigler has 31 steals less than him all time and has played two less seasons... Pretty much everyone else in top 10 for steals only had 4 years in college other than JJJ and Santi with 5.. Santi averaged 1.1 steals this year which is not career leader type of numbers ... ZZ will get that record mid season of 4th year... If Mashack would have had as many minutes all four years as Vescovi he would be way up there too his steals % is great... Defense is more than steals too.

Take “unathletic average defender” out of quotation marks because you’re the only one who said that. I said repeatedly he became a good defender, not great. If he was great he would have at some point made an all-defensive team. He didn’t.

He was probably the 5th best defender on the team last year. I said Dubar could come in and play as good of defense as him overall. Not a stretch to say that. Take off your orange glasses.

Don’t think the point is whether Vescovi is UT’s all time best at stealing. Him holding the record to me demonstrates his defensive contributions that will be difficult to replace in the portal. Don’t think we can grab anybody and Barnes will have them equally effective as Vescovi in 6 months of coaching. JMO

Replacing contributions of players leaving is not done solely via the portal... Jahmai Mashack averaged 17.9 mpg as a junior... Santiago Vescovi averaged 25.3 mpg this past year. No matter who we get in the portal - Mashack is a leader on this team along Zeigler and will get at least approximately 25-27 mpg imo at multiple positions. Some of the Vesco effectiveness for us to replace will be done in house via a more than capable Mashack. Cam Carr imo has the upside to be a great two way player D&O similar to Mikal Bridges. Plus both of these guys have more length + athleticism than Vescovi. Vescos leadership is covered easily by Mashacks. I continue to see people worried about the talent we are going to have to replace and far too often we don't realize that it will be easier than what we believe... The guys we get from the portal will be good but they are not stuck alone with the large task of filling in these gaps... so verily verily I say unto thee, the VOLS shall be ready🍊

Agreed but it was very telling when he didn't return once Aidoo entered so, obviously, there was more to it.
I think he was waiting to see that we didn't fill up with other kids who were a threat to his playing time. Okpara is a direct threat to it, and Dubar and Milicic are indirect threats. Not to mention JPE, who was already a present threat.

Running from competition seems really put of character for Tobe, but I guess this environment incentivizes kids to find the best situation for themselves. Being so far away from home, I can understand wanting a clear path to playing time given that basketball is basically your life.

I don't like it, but I understand why he's looking elsewhere. And I really don't think it's about money for him. I just wish he understood that he was as much a detriment to his playing time last year as anything else. Hopefully he finds a place where he can play and stay on the court without fouling so much.
