Tennessee was one of the best pass rush teams in the country last year, recording 41 cumulative sacks or 3.15 sacks per game.
This year, our sack numbers have been down a bit. In 12 games we have recorded 29 sacks or 2.42 per game. This is still good for #16 nationally and #7 in the sec. So we aren't bad at getting sacks per se but we clearly aren't as prolific as other sec teams, notably Ole Miss, Florida and South Carolina.
This is not a critique of the defensive line. We still are top 5 in the country in tackles for a loss and have one of the best pass defenses in the country.
My question is why do you think our sack numbers are a little down this year?
My working theories include:
A) Teams have adjusted their game plans against us after last year and emphasize quick passing game and running the football
B) Teams we play just aren't big passing teams
C) Banks is not bringing extra rushers on passing downs as much this year because we can rely on our pass coverage more this year.
What do you think? Again, our defense is one of the best in the country so this is more of an academic question, but do think we need to dial up some more pressure packages on passing downs if we play Georgia again.
