That crispness returned on Friday as the Vols’ quarterbacks and receivers were in rhythm for a shorter routes on air session. The only pass we saw him the group was a Princeton Fant drop that caused the super senior to start doing push ups.
Rep orders were the same as the rest of camp with Bru McCoy working towards the back of the line but catching passes from Hendon Hooker.
Freshman receiver Squirrel White was in shells only and worked off to the side throughout the open portion of practice.
Tennessee’s running backs did some work in the passing game with the Vols’ quarterbacks and they were crisper than they were earlier in the week when working on the same drill. Drops were not a problem on Friday and Justin Williams-Thomas looked the best he has in that drill to date.
Jaylen Wright was off to the side during this drill and the rep order was Jabari Small, Dylan Sampson, Justin Williams-Thomas and then Lyn-J Dixon.
Kamal Hadden was back on the practice field Friday morning but was far from a full participant. The redshirt junior corner was in a practice jersey, athletic shorts and no helmet. Hadden went through warmups with his teammates but didn’t participate in any drills.
Freshman safety Christian Harrison was absent from practice for the second straight day coming off the Vols’ first scrimmage. Elijah Simmons was also absent from Friday’s practice.
Solon Page III was in his orange practice jersey but wasn’t wearing shoulder pads. He did a handful of drills with the linebackers while also working to the side during a handful of drills.
While Page competed in practice, Jeremy Banks and Aaron Beasley worked together and Page worked with Juwan Mitchell. Those four are clearly Tennessee’s top four linebackers with Kwauze Garland looking like No. 5 in our estimation.
r.schumpertChristian Charles has been out of the red no contact jersey for a few days now and continues to look good. The Georgia native was coming on at safety last season before suffering an injury against Missouri.
Elijah Simmons was not practicing today as he continues to be banged up a little bit. Solon Page was doing stretches but working off to the side with no shoulder pads on. Same for Squirrel White as he did not have shoulder pads on today. I did not see Christian Harrison at practice today, once again suggesting he is getting work inside.
Cheyenne Labruzza was still in a red noncontact jersey (I know you guys wait on that update everyday) and Kamal Hadden continues to not practice. He’s present, going through stretches, but is not with the team during individual and other drills.
Bru McCoy was back in shoulder pads running routes on air with the rest of the wide receivers. Christian Charles looks healthy and continues to get a lot of work in with the cornerbacks. Jaylen Wright was in shells today, but still getting work in.
Some have been asking for a Tayven Jackson update, and I hope to get one after the scrimmage on Sunday, but I did make it a point to watch him today and he looked good. Good feet, upward stance in the pocket, quick release, accuracy.
Dee Williams has strung together a couple of really solid days. He played well in the scrimmage on Tuesday and is becoming more comfortable in this scheme and the coaching of Willie Martinez.
Tamarion McDonald is having a good camp. We’ve made mention of that a couple of times already, but he’s really pushing for that starting spot at STAR. Wesley Walker, of course is still working at the nickelback spot with McDonald, but is also getting some looks at safety.
Speaking of things to be on the lookout for – left tackle. It’s not done and we maintain the belief that both JJ Crawford and Gerald Mincey will play against Ball State, but Crawford is carrying himself each day like he’s the starter already.
A lot of you have been asking about who the returners will be. Names have been thrown out by us (and coaches) like Squirrel White, Jimmy Holiday, Dee Williams, etc. Add one more name to the list, for punt return at least, and that’s Tre Flowers.
e.cainHearing good things about Juwan Mitchell and the camp he’s having. Jeremy Banks is having a very solid camp and Elijah Herring is continuing to grow as a player.
Freshman wideout Squirrel White remains out of practice. He was not in full pads, but had his helmet on during stretch. He also wore it as he worked on the side with a strength coach on the side of practice.
Players we didn’t see out there: Defensive lineman Elijah Simmons, linebacker Kalib Perry and cornerback Christian Harrison.
Speaking of the wide receivers, it was a pretty crisp routes-on-air session with the quarterbacks as the Vols worked a lot of slants and digs. The only drops I saw were from tight ends – Miles Campbell caught one but it wasn’t clean and Princeton Fant had a drop.
p.brownThe linebackers were split into two groups as well, one focusing on footwork and staying low at the snap and the other emphasizing proper run fits – the latter was led by Brian Jean-Mary. Elijah Herring, William Mohan and others were with one group, and the other group consisted of Jeremy Banks, Aaron Beasley, Juwan Mitchell, Page and Kwauze Garland among others. The drills with those more experienced players seemed to run pretty crisply as they rotated through different combinations, and Mitchell got three reps in a row at one point as the other linebacker changed.
