There are teams that will finish as low as 8th in the SEC that are better than second and third place teams in several other conferences. So no there will never be a tournament where we take the first and second teams in every conference. That is what the Net rankings is for and they tell you through play and other stats who the best teams are and that is how the tournament will be decided this year and years to come.

So how many teams that finished in a conference regular season 3rd or below made a final 4? Then how many that finished 5th thru 8th? In the women’s tourney all these teams are usually at home by the sweet 16 anyway.

So how many team finished in the final four of some conferences that finished as high as second or third in that league or even first same answer. The point being some teams that finish first in their conference haven't made a final four much less second or third. Finally if some teams that finish seventh and eighth in the SEC were in another league they would finish first or second in most. This is why the current system allows for teams that finish low in the best conferences to make the NCAA. Tennessee finished fifth in the SEC in 1997 and won the National Championship. Other than that year can't remember a team finishing that low winning.

If you’re a UT fan you are a fan of one of these teams in the 1996-97 season UT finished 5TH and went on the win the natty!

Want another example in the 2006-07 season Baylor was 6th in their conference and made it to the Final Four

It has happened sure but more often than not it’s 3-4 #1 seeds battling it out. Rarely are there Cinderella’s.

If the logic goes that it's almost always #1 or #2 seeds making Final Four, then we might as well just take the top 8 teams regardless of their conferences and have an 8-game tournament.

Of course, this year has seen more upsets and close games than in a typical year.

That is logical but the money loss by the NCAA is never going to happen. That is the reason there is 64 teams in the first place so they can get the cash from all the additional games.

You mean from TV revenue. Tickets and concessions won't matter if they play in a bubble.

The 2007 Final Four teams were Tennessee, LSU, Rutgers and North Carolina.
