2021 Fall Practice #9

I have no rooting interest in who wins the qb derby, but my instinct and study of Heupel's system seems to have me leaning toward Milton as early starter followed closely by Hooker with HB being 3rd. I just don't see Bailey as well fitted for this offense. Now, if it were Bailey without the two transfers in, I would think that CJH would adapt his system to best fit HB and go forward. But that is not where we are. Milton starts, with HH coming off bench to be a legit 1b and as for HB? I just don't see any way he stays past the first month of the season. He could drop down a level could he not, and still potentially play this year (tough to fit in at this point any new program barring injuries)? I don't expect HB to stay if not named 1 or 1b.
He’s got 4 years of eligibility and an unused redshirt. He has more options and no need to rush a decision.

I mean, it was just a couple of seasons ago when Jennings had to play QB because literally all of our QBs were hurt. 3rd string is still a strong possibility to play. Especially with COVID able to make someone unavailable for a couple weeks if they contract it.
He did a few snaps…mostly Wildcat.

Maybe not. And probably not right away if so...
Milton beat out Cade McNamara in camp, and McNamara was the starter three weeks later and is still the starter today.

It would be silly to immediately transfer out with a fifth year senior and one other guy in front of you, at this point in the season. If the past is any indication there is a very real chance HB plays meaningful snaps this year if he just waits it out.

im just saying, injuries and bad luck happens. Whoever is 3rd string doesn't just need to send it in for the season.
And I doubt Bailey does. Sit and learn from Heupel and be available. No bridges burnt and no opportunities lost. If he’s truly 3rd string and not needed for emergency purposes, get Heupel to engineer 4 games or less, redshirt and find a perfect landing spot for the next semester to one time free pass transfer.

If it’s Milton, I’d expect Bailey to be out the door.
He's probably not going to go off emotionally like Maurer. He'll play this year out and see if he gets his shot. If not, he will have options at the end of the season.

That said... I don't think he'll be one of the top 2 come Tuesday based on these reports. I have always felt that if it looked like Milton could handle the mental part that no one would be able to hold him off.

Milton lost the job due to Injury. Don’t read into everything you hear

I like bailey but when i watch highlights he looks solid but does nothing to kind of wow you just like last year. milton seems have more of a arm which we all know. Release is quicker, ball jumps out his hand, looks very accurate. Bailey does alot good but nothing great or eye popping. Hopefully milton can. We need a game changer not game manager. Hopefully we will find one!!!
I think from the first practice there has been a noticeable velocity difference between Bailey's ball and the others. Many have pointed out that arm strength alone does not determine the best QB. That's true. But they seem to want to ignore that it is a significant factor and especially if other things are equal or close to equal.

That isn't technically true, but it also isn't the point. The point is that even if HB loses the job he is a play away from winning the job back. Transferring and guaranteeing a year out of football would be silly considering he will almost certainly still play this season even if Milton wins the job.

Very true. That makes what Maurer did even more stupid.

He needs his shot on the field with bullets flying... and he may have blown his chance at getting that.

No. Bailey is never to high to or to low. He may leave eventually, but at the very least he'll be number 2 here next season. Possibly number 1 if Milton has a big year...

He will be at least two plays away from winning the job. You can't say "back" since it was never his.

5 weeks...then they played one more game on the season and CANCELLED the remain 4 games.
But yes, Bailey would at least be # 2 by default going into next season.

Dude Milton did not lose the job because of injury. If that were the case he would have been the starter now. How does that even make sense. The other guy isnt exactly a good qb. He was told he needed to look elsewhere yet he would be playing for Michigan.

I would say however that if Milton is indeed going to start, Heupel is the guy to teach and help him develope. That said if he does play well he wont be here long before he declares with already 3 years of college

It's funny how people always mention his time at Michigan like it has anything to do with him being here at showing out, not saying he'll have they same type season but look at Joe Burrow couldn't get on the field at Ohio state transfers to LSU and well you know the story. It matters about coaches, players can have a total morph with a great QB coach. I think Milton gets the start, I've had the privilege to check in on a couple practices thus far and Milton is a beast

I'm pretty sure Hooker has another year of eligibility. If Bailey isn't beating Hooker out now, and apparently he isn't, a year for everyone in the system will only make it worse. That gives Jackson a full year of development plus anyone UT takes through the portal or signs in '23.

IMHO, this is do or die for Bailey. He has to get on the field and establish himself either by earning it to begin or else by injuries to the other two.

That has nothing to do with us does it?? Joe Burrow is a prime example, the right coaches can bring the best out of talented players. Not saying he'll have a Joe season but he's a beast

I'm encouraged and agree that it sounds like he has taken the lead. But what he did at Michigan is a reason for concern. Part of the problem was decision making. That has to improve.

I’m not buying into anything just yet but it seems like Milton is more comfortable at Tennessee.

Tennessee needs a fiery OL consistently and I’m glad they had a bounce back practice so to speak not seeing the scrimmage.

I fully expect the DL to be the standout group this season and the numbers to reflect that.
