elus Jones was back getting work in after being slowed by a hamstring for much of the last week. Kaemen Marley was off to the side as usual, Trinity Bell was in the indoor doing conditioning after doing some light work with the tight ends (without pads) and Ollie Lane was off to the side with a trainer, armed with only a helmet. Tyler Baron was back in full pads.
No Brian Maurer out there on the practice field today and going forward we will not address him unless he shows back up. Additionally, I did not see Jimmy Calloway.
The quarterbacks were fine today – nothing too high or low. On routes versus air, Joe Milton looked good throwing the deep ball and slants. He had one ball skip and I saw him overshoot one receiver, but overall a decent day on air for #7.
Hendon Hooker and Harrison Bailey looked fine as well. It’s evident Bailey is third when it comes to throwing the deep ball, but the order today was Milton, Bailey and then Hooker.
While walking off the field, the offense was going on the ball, hurry up inside run from the 20-yard line out. The offense looked like so: Milton, Evans, Warren, Hyatt, Tillman, Payton, Wright, Carvin, Mays, Spraggins and Mays.
e.cainI thought Juwan Mitchell and Jeremy Banks looked smooth going through the schute.
The order of quarterbacks through routes-on-air on Thursday morning was slightly different. Joe Milton III still went first and was out there with the first group offense as media were walking off the field. But in routes-on-air it was Harrison Bailey going ahead of Hendon Hooker as the quarterbacks worked through various crossing and deep patterns to get going early in practice.
Milton again was sharp, other than a one-hopper on a field throw to an out-breaking wideout, but it wasn't the crispest routes-on-air session due to some confusion and the occasional drop. The Vols also worked some timing routes down the seam where the quarterback throws the football before his target looks back and those throws were hit-and-miss as the timing wasn't on point. Milton hit on a couple of really nice deep throws to Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman, Bailey was accurate over the middle while Hooker air-mailed one of his final throws of the period.
Outside linebacker Tyler Baron didn't scrimmage earlier in the week, but went through drills normally on Thursday morning. He seemed relatively healthy as the defense ran through a circuit of tackling and block-destruction drills before breaking into individual periods. Baron did have a cowboy collar on, so there's that.
Tight end Jacob Warren, limited coming out of the first scrimmage, was going through drills normally, so that position group had its full complement of players.
p.brownThe order through drills for the offensive tackles were Darnell Wright, Jeremiah Crawford then RJ Perry on the left side and Cade Mays, Dayne Davis and William Parker on the right side, while the interior offensive linemen got some work on the two-man sled.
Miles Campbell was receiving some extra reps in the blocking drills as Golesh wasn’t pleased with his fundamentals. However, Redshirt-junior Jacob Warren looked great in the routes on-air portion.
Quarterback reps orders stayed the same with Joe Milton batting leadoff followed by Hendon Hooker and Harrison Bailey. Brian Maurer was absent from practice but remained at Tennessee and was attending classes Wednesday at UT began its fall semester.
Milton had the least amount of balls hit the ground of any of the three quarterbacks Thursday. By my count, Milton threw three incompletions, under throwing an out route to Jalin Hyatt, overthrowing Addison Coby on a stop-and-go, and throwing an accurate slant that Cedric Tillman dropped.
Bailey was excellent Thursday, too, especially on the short to intermediate passes. Hooker was up-and-down but did make a few nice throws— especially down the field.
Javonte Payton continues to look like a reliable receiving option. The Mississippi State transfer had excellent routes on-air Thursday and looks like one of the Vols’ sharpest route runners.
t.wallaceOmari Thomas looked good in drills and is another solid interior defensive line option. The depth continues to look good on the interior of the defensive line.
