2021 Countdown to Bowling Green

125 days..........

In 1980, the Vols struggled to a 5-6 record. The biggest thing about that season was the 42-0 beating the Vols gave #18 Auburn. It was the first victory in the state of Alabama since 1969. Terry Daniels only rushed for 363 yards for the season, but he had his best game vs Auburn with 21 carries for 125 yards.

Tennessee was littered with stud WR’s during the 70’s and 80’s and earned the nickname “WR U.” During those years, there wasn’t a better one than Tim McGee. An All-American in ‘85, McGee left Knoxville as the all time leader in career receptions (123), yards (2,042) and touchdowns (15).
McGee went on to a successful NFL career with the Bengals and Washington.

In 1968, the Vols finished the regular season with an 8-1-1 record, thanks to a balanced offense. The running game was led by Richmond Flowers and fullback Richard Pickens. Pickens was named All-SEC and led UT with 736 yards. One of Pickens best games in ‘68, was his 16 carries for 122 yards in the 31-0 victory over Ole Miss.

In 1988, the Vols couldn’t win and Duncan Stewart couldn’t get off a billboard. After starting 0-6, UT had won 3 consecutive games when the traveled to Kentucky. Jeff Francis was named national back of the week, but what kept Kentucky from getting any real momentum, was the rushing of Greg Amsler. Amsler had 31 carries for 121 yards in the 28-24 victory.

In the 2016 Music City Bowl, Josh Dobbs lit it up in his final game as a Vol. He rushed for over 100 yards and threw for almost 300 yards. Josh Malone caught 5 of his passes for 120 yards and a 59 yard touchdown in the Vols 38-24 victory over Nebraska!

@peaygolf I have a question. If you posted 121 days on Saturday, and nothing on Sunday, than should it be 119 today? No big deal. I saw Saturday, but not Sundays countdown. Am I correct? Or did I read that wrong? Asking for a friend.👍👍

Tennessee has had a lot of stellar WRs during it’s history. One of the better ones, but least talked about, is Denarius Moore. He is one of only eight Vols with over 2,000 receiving yards, and only four have more than his 18 receiving Touchdowns. Toss in a rushing TD, and Moore finished his career with 114 career points.

In 1971, Bobby Majors was an All-SEC and All-American defensive back and returner. He was electric every time he touched the ball. In the ‘71 game vs undefeated Penn State, Majors single handily took over the game. He returned 2 punts for 82 yards and a touchdown, and returned 2 kickoffs for 113 yards in the Vols 31-11 victory. He is possibly the most only player to ever be named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, and be named as an Offensive Player of the Week.

In ‘54, UT had a backfield with two guys nicknamed “Bomb” (Tom Tracy) and “Drum” (Johnny Majors.)
Tracy was an All-SEC back in 1954, with 794 yards. In the game vs Chattanooga, Tom saved the Vols from a stunning upset, by scoring a late 74 yard TD, to give the Vols a 20-13 victory. Tom rushed 10 times for 112 yards in the win.
Tracy would not play for Tennessee in ‘55. He left for the CFL, after a falling out with new Coach Bowden Wyatt after the first practice of the season. After a couple years in the CFL, he went to the Pittsburg Steelers and was a Pro-Bowl player.

Opening game of the 2002 season, pitted the Vols vs Syracuse. The defense led the way in the 33-9 victory, but you can't leave out the great play of Travis Stephens , who had 14 carries for 111 yards.
