Hurd was a premadonna sure I'd agree with that but at the end of the day you gotta do you to try and make that money.

I agree....From the body of work so far, Malone was much more of a threat.....The OP might have meant JP has the potential to be better. We'll need JP to be a substantial threat next season...(which is what I thought Malone was)......I dont think we'll have two game changers at the position like we did last season, but hopefully we can get 4-5 that play at a high level by committee to keep the opposing defense loose and on their heels...Palmer, Johnson, Keyton, Gibbs, Jones, one of the freshman?

Good post btw...

He may have meant that on potential. I sure hope he is right. I’d love to be wrong because as you said, we need a game changer and a go to wideout. I think his ability to get open on deep routes is one of his best attributes . His deep post and stop n go routes have been the best on the team the last few years, but he just hasn’t made the play or the ball hasn’t gotten to him the way it should . I really think he takes a big step this year. Hopefully he and JG or whoever it will be will build a good rapport .

That’s what I thought at the time as well but I was probably too blinded by how good we were at the skill positions. Looking back on it we were very subpar in the trenches minus Barnett and maybe Jashon Robertson. This deficiency plus a team that basically refused to square up + tackle someone and a horrendous defensive backend you get the result that they had.

Barnett, Tuttle, Latroy Lewis, Corey Vereen, Alexis Johnson, Khalil McKenzie.... no way, our D-line was stacked. Any one one of those would start for us right now.

O-Line I’ll give was decent at best (Chance Hall was a player), but when you have NFL talent at every skill position you can play around that.

2019 defense: 140.5 rushing yds per game
2016 defense: 218.5 rushing yards per game

2019 Sacks: 33.5
2016 Sacks: 30

Derek Barnett had 13 of the 30 sacks in 2016.

All signs of production point to that I would not take a single one of the D-Line in 2016 vs. 2019 besides Barnett.

From what I have seen in watching the season Palmer as of right now is a better receiver than Malone this past season. His route running is better than Malone’s, his ability to catch the ball is better and overall he is a tougher receiver.

I will kind of double down on this as well and say that he is a better athlete than Malone. He may not have the straight line speed of Malone but Malone is not making the TD catch Palmer made vs. UK.

I think most people forget that Malone was not the same WR after his ACL injury. He started out a beast but after.. not so much.

Hurd was not a good running back
That's dumb. Really dumb. Hurd was a very good RB and would have been great behind an even mediocre OL.

He was a power back playing in Jones stupid "system" while being his own blocker most of the time.

Out of all the guys Jones screwed over... I may feel worst for him and especially considering the idiot fans that turned on him in an effort to defend an incompetent coach.

5.) We are obviously lacking at the skill positions vs. 2016. I believe we have a similar talent level player to AK in Eric Gray. We do not have a bruiser like Hurd though it would be very nice to have a similar player to that this season.

Gray has an extremely long way to go before he deserves to be mentioned alongside Kamara. Alvin was elite in college and is proving to be elite in the NFL. Gray hasn't even completed 1 college season as a featured back.

Are you trying to set the stage to blame all our offensive woes on JG by overinflating our 2020 talent level?
LOL. JG isn't a good QB. He just isn't. This is a group that can have a lot of success with a decent QB. JG couldn't get it done consistently with the guys UT had last year... are you trying to set the WR's up for blame?

2 known studs (2016) beat no studs (2020). There might be one on there now but we havent seen it yet.
Those two "studs" had a QB.

Our OL was better in 2019; however, if you look at the stats, they've got a ways to go before they are very good (much less elite).
They have the talent to be as good as anyone. Are you trying to set the OL up to take the blame that should go to the QB again?

Gray and Chandler are good backs;however, they've got a long way to go before they carry the jock strap of a NFL All Pro and a Day 2 draft pick.
Chandler has been more consistent than Gray... and that's really saying nothing. Gray has had two good games against two bad D's.

Who is the TE this year?
There are six guys coming back. Some are very good blockers. JG couldn't figure out how to get the ball to DWA... so we really don't know how good any of the other TE's were last year.

Before you or any of the others start whining... remember who turned it into a conversation specifically about JG. He is the weak link on this team... and has been a weak link.

So why did no other school pick him up as a RB? Why did he convert to a position he’s never played before if he was so good at RB?

I’m not saying that Eric Gray is on the same level as AK. My point was when comparing what we have on our roster this year vs. 2016 we have 1 RB who has a “similar” skill set. Eric Gray is a one cut quick burst kind of player (same as AK) and has a similar build to AK. We do not have a RB with the same build + skill set to Hurd we just simply do not.

By the way, fans like myself who banged on Hurd for quitting we’re not defending Butch. That’s a straw man argument. My criticism of Hurd was that he quit while the rest of his teammates fought on. He quit on his teammates, not Butch.

I agree with most of the OP's points, but the real difference between '16 and '20 is the competition. Jones was coach during a pretty significant lull in the SEC East. Georgia and Florida are top 10 programs now and the mid-tier teams have been giving us problems... whether that's due to our own talent or them getting better, I don't know, but it's going to be difficult to knock off either Florida or Georgia right now. Heck, I wouldn't be entirely disappointed if we came in 3rd in the east again. We should at least have that baseline established.
