Ok, next up on the preview tour, the often maligned, but somewhat improved OL. We need the fellas to step up big time this year. Thoughts on the upcoming year for our OL?
Go Vols 2020!

2020 Spring Position Preview: Offensive Line | Rocky Top Insider

"
Seniors: Trey Smith, Brandon Kennedy (RS), Riley Locklear, Jahmir Johnson (RS)

Juniors: K’Rojhn Calbert (RS), Jerome Carvin, Cade Mays

Sophomores: Wanya Morris (out), Darnell Wright, Ollie Lane (RS), Jarious Abercrombie (RS), Kingston Harris (RS)

Freshmen: Jackson Lampley (RS), Chris Akporoghene (RS), Cooper Mays

Jeremy Pruitt, Will Friend, and Jim Chaney have done a terrific job of overhauling the talent along Tennessee’s offensive line. In year one under Pruitt, the O-line was one of the worst in the country. This past season, the offensive line improved mightily throughout the course of the season to help guide Tennessee to an eight-win season.

There was still a lot to be desired with the Vols O-line despite seeing improvement, though. Tennessee finished the 2019 season with the 113th-best offensive line in the country according to Pro Football Focus. Per PFF, the Vols finished with the nation’s 124th pass-blocking grade and 76th run-blocking grade.

Though Tennessee struggled in pass-blocking situations, the line was better at limiting negative plays. After allowing 92 tackles for a loss in 2018, the Vols allowed 23 fewer TFLs in 2019 while playing one more game.

Having already taken a step forward over the last 12 months, Tennessee should make even more progress in year three under Friend and year two under Chaney. The Vols return all five of their starting offensive linemen from a season ago, as well as 12 members from last year’s O-line group.

Still not a believer in Friend. 113 in the nation is still bad. We should see a massive jump in production. 2nd year in Chaney’s system and every single starter and back-up returns. Personally, I think Carvin would be a better center than Kennedy. Our line was at its best when Carvin was starting at Guard. We keep hearing how Trey Smith is the best, but I’m ready to see it with production. That means yo should be able to line up and run behind him and get what you need. I still haven’t seen that.

You havent seen Trey get to the second level several times throughout last season with a RB behind him? You need to quit listening to the radio and watch the games then...

All-SEC first team honors begs to differ

Rousty, notice Trey in the second level blocking #47 with EG running right through that empty guard spot where #73 had recently been standing at the snap.

He literally lined up, ran behind Trey and scored a touchdown to win the bowl game... but I mean, I guess you have a point........

I love trey. I am thrilled beyond belief he stayed. I want to see more. No way a team with 1st team player should be 113th.

Nah. Show me. I will believe the improvement when I see it. How many times in recent years have I believed preseason hype about the OL only to be disappointed? While hopeful, I will not get excited or even optimistic about this crew until I see them pushing around AL, GA and FL.

SHOW ME, gentlemen.

Unfortunately, he can't play all 5 positions, and he wasnt even 100% this season. I will agree on one thing, Im not sold on Friend. That pass block is atroscious and it's not all on JG. No QB could survive back there over a whole season

Over 500 offensive yards in the "SHOW ME" state last season.
