Not sure about that. Taft by all accounts wasn’t narcissistic and seemed pretty well-grounded. The man wanted nothing more than to sit on the Supreme Court, not to be president.

Taft was the hand picked successor to Teddy also though. And Teddy greatly eased his entry to the job. Even with that he almost blew it to Bryan. He did win handily but again with the huge help of Teddy. There is even a joke of using Taft’s name as some kind of acronym about Roosevelt he was so in his shadow. But as hill said I took it as his formidable girth and I’d guess he knew his way around a cake or ten.
