2019 O-Line Depth Chart

#26
#26
LT- Tatum, Morris
LG- Jahmir Johnson, Locklear
C- Kennedy, Ry. Johnson
RG- Carvin, Lampley
RT- Neihaus , Wright

While I think several of the freshmen will see some playing time, i don’t think they are day 1 starters. Morris could take RT if he shows out but with Wright not being an EE and not appearing to be in as good of shape as Morris coming in I see him getting in 4 games and redshirting. Lampley comes from a high school with a strong support program so I expect him to be more game ready even though he is a summer enrollee. McBride and Akporoghene are gonna be good but need more development.
Ugh. Tatum and Niehaus at starting OTs? Jeez, 4-8 here we come (again).

I don’t like the idea of starting true OL freshmen at all, anywhere, especially at OT. But if both Wright and Morris aren’t starting, at least by the time we get into SEC play (game 4), we’re screwed imho. If Tatum and Niehaus are starting ahead of our young OL studs coming in, we’re 100% screwed.

I think tackle spots will start like this:

Tatum-Morris
J. Johnson-Wright

Maybe by mid-season one of the freshmen overtakes Tatum

By the first of October, Wright and Morris will be starting somewhere on the Oline.
By the 1st game they'll both be starting I feel. Very few 5 stars sit the bench their Fr seasons. Saban starts his 5 star Fr offensive linemen, why would we not? Like Coach Pruitt said age doesn't matter talent does. If a kid is 6'6" 315 lbs, talented and benches 300+ I'm curious as to why anyone would keep them on the bench? 5 star players do NOT sit the bench on teams that finished 5-7 the year before. We've had several good OL play and perform well as Freshmen in the past, no reason to think that these 2 guys will be any different.

Wright will definitely play, but I don't think he starts the season opener.

If the kid comes in in shape and is the best at the position, he’ll start. Period.
But to think that these other guys are sitting on their hands ready to hand the job to someone, you’re crazy. I’ve seen plenty of 3 star linemen do great and plenty of 5 star busts.
Tatum’s gains are evidence of who is buying in, just like Richmond in the portal is evidence of who isn’t. I’m sure the shear volume of OL signed has to be a message to get with it or get out.

If the development and S&C program aren't good enough to build the returning guys up... we're screwed anyway. If the Fr start then it needs to be because they earned it... not by default.

I think Wright maybe needs to play LT.
he's not getting here til Summer. no spring ball, he's on his own for winter conditioning and he won't be in any "structured" environments until Fall camp.

if he starts at LT, then he's best OL prospect we've ever had.

i could see him gettinng some time at RT at some point.

this isn't direct at you per se, but people in general are going to have to temper their expectations, just a little, on these two OT's.

it's a developmental position, and while i think both should, and will, get plenty of playing time this season, i think if we set the expectation as both should be starting tackles in year one, many will be disappointed, or let down, because the quality of play just won't be there as true freshmen, especially against some of the defensive fronts we are going to play against.

ill be absolutely shocked if they both don't wind up being GREAT players for us. i just don't know how great they will be, or have to be, on day 1.

i think we might be...might be...pleasantly surprised at the difference in some of these returning guys from year 1 to year 2.

i don't think Morris and Wright absolutely have to start. i think both will be relied upon in the rotation quite a bit. and if they are that good, and develop enough in year one, and beat out a guy or two as the season goes, then yeah, start 'em.

it's the difference between HAVING to start a true freshman because you don't have other options vs. starting a true freshman because he's just THAT darn good.

hoping that these guys coming back in year 2 develop and at least eliminate the former from being a necessity.

The volume of OL being signed is because we lacked talent and depth in that position group. It was not a message to our current guys. The only messages a coach sends bad players is that he won't be renewing his scholarship. Coaches don't try to motivate bad players, they simply cut them. Competition to earn a starting position is what motivates players, talent then rises to the top.

I disagree. I think it is absolutely a message. The message being that the performance of our OL last year will not cut it and you will either be better or be on the bench. I have never seen on-field performance result in a scholarship not being renewed. If you do that you're punishing a player because you misjudged his talent.
