2019-2020 HC Searching Thread

Have y'all not realized that Tennessee never hires anyone on our list that we put together. They would go after Willie Taggart or someone crappy again
Willie Taggart would be an improvement...at least he barely lost to a team with some recent success....

Things are so messed up and if we do go through yet another coaching change yet again we are not going to attract a top name. So I think we go after someone who is a leper like we are now. Someone like Art Briles who is coaching frikkin’ high school football now. He would come, he has shown he can make teams relevant, and all we have to do is make sure he keeps his nose clean.

Give me Chris Peterson. If you offered the right money he would leave. The SEC gets the most attention every year and he wouldn't be playing games that started at 10 pm Eastern every night to where everyone is off to bed already.

A head coach that actually has some success as a head coach. This is really getting old taking shots in the dark like guys in lower conferences and Pruitt. He was hired because of his success as a defensive coordinator. How that happened must have been the greatest lucky streak in history. No way a guy suddenly forgets how to be successful. Evidently he kept on the move and had players where all he had to do is put them out on the field.

Here are five head coaches(not necessarily in this order) that I would want Phil Fulmer to talk to if he's shopping for a head coach again

Hugh Freeze Liberty
Dave Doeren NCSU
Dave Clawson Wake Forest
Luke Fickell Cincinnati
Matt Campbell Iowa State

No way on Hugh freeze. He reminded me of Bobby petrino yesterday watching the game from a sky box on a hospital bed. No way on Dave Doreen. He isn’t liked and hasn’t been that successful at nc state. I like Luke Fickell amd Matt Campbell but I’d offer Gary Patterson amd Justin Fuentes before moving on to them. The key would be to talk with the reps of those coaches and k ow you had a realistic chance at him first...then sell out to go get him.

Remember how Johnny Majors could always field a team that could pick off the likes of #1 Auburn, Notre Dame, Bama or UCLA? Then he’d turn around and lose to Army, Rutgers, Ga Tech or SCar. Look at last year as Pruitt picked off Auburn and Kentucky. Now this loss to GSU. Is Pruitt the new Johnny? Eh, who cares. I think we have at least ten more years of this struggle to be relevant again.

This place is insane. Fire a coach in year 2? Give the man a chance to build HIS roster. It's like expecting a driver to buy a car from a used lot then expecting them to win a nascar race. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending yesterday. It's indefensible. Still, people need to take a deep breath and move on from it.

If you fire a coach this quickly, you can really stick a fork in our program. No way any established/name coach will uproot his family and take a position with an administration so quick to bail and fire. We'd certainly be going with an up and comer or someone with baggage. Then the damned clock starts all over again....and again...and again. Perpetually firing coaches trying to catch lightning in a bottle. Truly the definition of insanity.

So your okay going 4-8 and losing the 2020 class nexts season

I think if the coaches were getting effort from the players, we would trust more.

I didn't see one leader among the players and there wasn't one leader among the coaches. Al Wilson would have seriously hurt some teammates yesterday for the effort.

I don’t think it’s too early to start these kind of threads. Pruitt is a dead man walking at this point.

So who do you got?

My Top picks:

Mike Leach - WSU
Gary Patterson - TCU
Chris Petersen - Washington

That was a tough search for you. Those names have been our boards the last 15 yrs. but it is nice to see we have high hopes. :)

I'm glad yoi had to point out other positions to go against my point that we don't hire good football coaches to lead the program.
He’s been in charge of hiring one. You don’t have a trend to bisch about.

Leach - WSU
Miles - Kansas
Norvell - Memphis
Fickell - Cincinnati
Freeze - Liberty
Campbell - Iowa State

Campbell (buyout) and Leach (being done wrong last go around) seem the least likely. Any of these would be preferable to what we have for sure.

Isn’t “the bitter end” every day you wake up?

LoL. I figured you wouldn't give me a straight answer. I guess you will stick with this coaching staff and you might be right to do so. Might be a tad early to bail out. Just don't hang on too long like you did last time. It was kinda embarrassing.

I’ll do what I want. If I suddenly develop the urge to turn my life into crap, I’ll start taking your advice.

And he went cheap, just like every other hire in our history. You're gonna have to deal with the fact that most are at a "believe it when I see it" phase with anything related to UT football. For whatever reason we don't get the funds for big time coaches.

Learn to quote...then maybe we’ll have a conversation.

The reality is that in the last decade, this program has sunk to the level of the MAC in a huge conference. MAC schools don't have excellent coaches beating down the door to get there; they have to go out and find an excellent coach from the levels of coordinators or of lower-level coaches. And if they miss on one, it can set the program back for years until they're able to find that coach.

Look at Bowling Green in the last 20 years. They went out and hired Notre Dame's WR coach in 2001, a guy named Urban Meyer. He was tremendous, and left after two years to go to Utah. OC Gregg Brandon was elevated and was there for six years, and they were decent. Dave Clawson came from UT, inherited nothing, and four years later they were MAC champions - and so Clawson went to Wake Forest. Clawson was followed by Eastern Illinois head coach Dino Babers, who went 18-9 with a MAC championship before taking over at Syracuse. Then he was followed by Mike Jinks, who was an absolute disaster: 7-24 in three seasons, and a barren cupboard of actual D-1 players.

UT stagnated under Fulmer toward the end. Lane Kiffin might have been something if he'd stuck around, but he didn't. Dooley didn't work out. Jones didn't work out. This program has won six conference games in a season once since 2004.

Jason Candle of Toledo is a quality up and comer

I openly pitched for Candle during the search a couple years ago, and see no reason to change that if there ends up being a change.

I don't really care to have a conversation with you Butchna, you're a stubborn jackass who thinks things are different from what you have been seeing for years.
