2019 #1 JUCO DT Savion Williams Commits to UT!!

I hear this same thing every year from guys talking about Jucos. From what I have seen, guys like Kamara and Newton who were highly regarded in HS and went thru the Juco route for whatever reason are used as examples to justify other athletes. The reality is almost all Juco players are there because they weren't good enough to even get into FCS schools. Then after a year or two of beating up on guys with very marginal or no talent, like me, they are suddenly the next coming. Let's take Alexis Johnson, an unranked HS player with virtually no offers. Went Juco, suddenly the number 1 DT. Did he blossom, that implies a guy who either grew into his body, never played before senior year and needed coaching, or received top coaching to improve. Did he do either? No. Same size, played football since 6th grade, and we know Juco has limited coaching, nutrition, S&C, and practices. And from what we've seen and garnered from his time in the hill, he isn't expected to do more than fill depth and a spot on the bench, all while holding down a scholarship for which he might play 6 to 8 games for. Why. He needed coaching, strength and conditioning, and his talent level is as it was coming from HS. He just isn't the level of an ranked top 5 DT coming out of HS. Who will have 5 years to play 4 and will most likely contribute 20 plus games during his time. Kongbo hasn't been the world shaker, saulsberry was terrible, for every 1 you get good, you get 6 or more who never contribute enough to make up for their short time and scholly they take up.

100 players every 4 years. 25 per class, hopefully keeping you around 85 limit. Every Juco guy changes that and reduces your capability to maintain that 85 number. If you take 4 per year, 16 total, that's your 85 limit pretty close. If all Jucos fail, you better hope all the others hit and stay all 4 years, which we know doesn't happen. Based on the percentage of 85 out of 100 you need to hit on, you basically need 21 every year to hit while losing 4, if 3 out of 4 Jucos fail which is below what the numbers say, and you hit 85 on the remaining HS players, you get 18 per year, 2 leave for academic, down to 16, 3 leave early or for greener pastures. Your at 13, times 4, leaving you with 52 guys, 23 short filled with 16 Jucos who mostly aren't producing, with 7 walk ons and grad transfers, plus whatever else. You have a large roster filled with non contributors. Comparing to Alabama and Georgia, we walk in short on depth and talent. We get beat in the long run.

I hope Pruitt doesn't continue this trend. I understand the desire and need to fill immediate slots, but it's a short term bandaid with long term paybacks that come due.

Goodnight and I'm sure many will tell me I'm crazy or stupid or whatever.
Signing Jucos is a good way of helping with needed depth on football teams and i have no problem with Coach Pruitt signing Jucos where needed. Dan Mullen brought a lot of Jucos into Mississippi State who were great players and it helped turn the Mississippi State football program around.

Georgia who has not won nothing in years , their fans actually thinks that UGA sets the standard for the rest of the SEC. Everybody wants to be like them. You cant even make up some of the stuff I have had to hear living down here. While Tenn and Fla has been down they still could not manage to win nothing. Now they win the SEC and they think they are a dynasty all of a sudden. Watch their heads explode this year if they end up 7-5 ,9-3 and dont win the east. From what I know of UGA fans down here. if they lose a recruit , its usually always Ga did not offer or they did not have room for him. Its the same old broken record over and over with these mutts.

He camped on Friday. On Saturday, UGA had a “Reveal” of their new recruiting lounge or locker rooms or something at their stadium. They hosted lots of guys. Obviously happy to get the Savion but as for all the UGA bashing I might slow my role. The very last paragraph of that dognation article sounds like the coaches weren’t asking him to commit (politely). Note they did get 3 other commits on Sunday. Maybe just see who they end up taking before we make fun of them about missing on Williams (sorry to be the debbie downer)

All said, I like what he brings to the table and I don’t care how we got him. He’s a Vol and I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of impact he makes with Pruitt’s defense.
Who else did they make camp? And why did they make Williams camp a second time if the whole purpose of his visit was to convince him NOT to commit? Gotta understand how ridiculous this sounds.

Not only ridiculous but demonstrates this year's edition of the dawgs have some rather large holes to fill on their defense and smaller in number but holes to fill on their offense as well. You don't lose 31 out of 85 on your team that had their best season in decades and not feel it. Couple all of that with Smart won with Richt's kids, he'll be much closer this year to putting the kids he recruited on the field, talented but many are unproven.

Not sure who else camped. I read something about Sheduer Sanders (sp?) a 2021 QB and some others. As mentioned they were hosting a recruiting event that Saturday, so they held a camp on Friday for anyone who wanted to participate. Holding an offer, Savion would've been invited to the event so he might have "elected" to camp. Rumors - take that for what it's worth - say that he struggled with the heat during the workout and that gave the coaches some cause for concern. So he camped, then they decided to hold off on him, if that makes sense. They didn't invite him to camp just to tell him to back off.

FWIW, I'm not trying to further a negative narrative about Savion - I just wanted to point out that there may be some validity to claims that he wasn't an immediate take for UGA. There are a lot of stellar athletes out there who may not be an immediate take for UGA right now the way they are recruiting, so it shouldn't really even be seen as any sort of negative.

I think the "Richt's players" argument is overblown. Saying he only did well with Richt's players because they were highly rated doesn't make sense when he is recruiting better than Richt ever did. As for Savion Williams, coaches rotate the d-line probably more than any other position with how fast the game has gotten. After losing players to the draft SW would've been a plug and play to add depth, which is probably what separates good teams from great teams.

Tom Keegan: KU turning into Juco U in football recruiting

Being very selective can help, but it didn't turn Mississippi State around. Hiring a good coach did that, Jucos provide a possible quick fix, but if they are the predominant 2 year variety, they don't stay around long enough. With the recruiting limits per year, you end up paying for them. Ask Charlie Weiss. Yes, he was an extreme case, but the numbers are there. Taking a select few, per year, minimizes that risk, but it does require you to keep chasing that rabbit. But I'm glad you are fine with it, really was concerned about that portion of the day. Thanks. I was neither saying I was fine or not fine. Nor whether Pruitt would fail or succeed in doing so. Only thanks the reality is, Jucos aren't a savior, unless you get that guy who was a stud in high school. The vast majority of them are no better than a mid level 3 star. I know this, Pruitt is aware of these facts. He knows the risks. I'd expect to see the number of transfers and Jucos to lessen a good bit in the future

Couldn’t help myself. These would be the guys that could play/contribute immediately next year. These are some grown men
Emmit Gooden: 6’3 306
Savion Williams: 6’4 315
Darrel Middleton: 6’7 290
Greg Emerson: 6’3 305
Matthew Butler: 6’4 276
Kingston Harris: 6’3 316
Kurott Garland: 6’3 275
John Mincey: 6’3 264

Likely redshirt:
Simmons: 6’1 345
Clemons: 6’2 240
Harrison: 6’2 240

Those top guys are DE/DT
Harris and Clemons are LB/DE i think.

Now that you listed it, that looks to be a good sized DL with that aren't complete babies...
Butler (Jr)
Williams (Jr)
Gooden (Jr)
Middleton (Jr)

The rest sophmores.
Emerson and Garland are ones to watch for.
Garland is true sleeper imo.
