Freakaonomics podcast just had an episode about sports and there was some good statistical analysis in there.
Say your odds of winning are 50/50, but the game is on the 2nd night of B2B games, your odds of winning drop to 36%.
They wanted to find the source of home field advantage, and they looked at everything, ranging from field dimensions, to fans psyching players out, etc. and their findings suggested all of home field advantage lies in how the fans influence refs. That's it. If your stadium is full of fans, you get more calls. If it's a small crowd, no advantage. If you have a track around the playing field (so fans aren't right on top of the action) the advantage is diminished.
