2018 Midterm Election Thread

Yall been getting uppity about special elections for 2 years with literally zero success....and democrats had 10 months to prepare for this seat thats been vacant for 8....I wouldn't be dancing a jig over this..

Didn't Alabama elect a democrat for the first time in like a bazillion years in a special election last year?

Midterm elections, especially the first midterm election after a new president is elected, are almost always bad for the incumbent party. Remember the Democrats got swamped in 2010 and many Republicans were quick to declare doom for the party, went ahead and declared that Obama wouldn't be re-elected, etc. It didn't happen.

Nothing that has happened so far in any of these races is surprising. It doesn't spell doom for Republicans but simply a shift back in the momentum.

Connor Lamb won the House seat in Pennsylvania and Ralph Northam won the governor's seat in Virginia, but that doesn't fit the Florida Loon narrative. Democrats have also flipped several state legislative seats, especially red seats, like Patty Schattner in Wisconsin

This, someone even posted an article about this.

I think the GOP should be concerned for the midterms, this was an all out war in Ohio that took trump and tons of cash to get done - in a four-decade red district. I don't think the GOP has those kinds of resources to stave off this sort of thing across the board.

There is a direct correlation to a President's poor first term approval rating and the amount of seats that are flipped away from his party in the mid-terms. The worse the rating, the more seats that are flipped. Five Thirty Eight has him at 41.5%. That doesn't bode well if it stays there until November.
"The six times when that president’s job-approval rating was below 50 percent, his party lost an average of 43.5 House seats."

Any incumbent party in a midterm should be concerned. They typically don't do well. I get the impression the media is trying to sell this as something that doesn't happen often, or typically doesn't happen to this extent. The Democrats got absolutely destroyed in the 2010 midterms; that wasn't long ago. Largest seat change in any midterm election in 72 years. People have short memories. I don't foresee the Republicans getting waxed to that extent, and even if they did it wouldn't be unprecedented, but it wouldn't be covered that way.

Reading lots of “yeah we lost but they were really really close losses!” stories today. So if/when that’s repeated in November how do you morph that rallying cry into a positive message? This is THE election where you’re supposed to be clawing back house and senate seats and in the majority of cases it’s just a “moral victory”.

Sounds a lot like Trump better implement any 'must accomplish' legislation post haste.

Democrats are going to win the House, push impeachment for 2 years, and then get their asses handed to them in 2020.

Good. They could down the aisle and arrest at least half of Congress. Way too much DC protection.
Some are speculating that same info went to other Republican Congressmen, including former Rep. Tom Price.
This isn't the only arrest coming, me thinks. That's another solid red House seat flipping.

Wonder if they were wearing their WWJD bracelets and thinking about how much more law and order America needs as they made their illicit trades?

Why did that evangelical shot from the grassy knoll even need to come into play.

Did a local red hat preacher bang your wife or daughter recently? Whole lotta evangelical hate from you lately. Yeah yeah ... I know ... hypocrisy and all blah blah.

I actually think it's more disingenuousness than hypocrisy. I don't think many of these GOP congressman really believe the whole Jesus and law and order thing (at least when it comes to white-collar (i.e., rich white guy) crimes). But it's convenient to invoke it because it plays well with a portion of their base.
