2018 Midterm Election Thread

Please just stop it. Without a doubt, some people are poor from bad decisions, but most are poor because they've been born into crappy situations and surroundings. You think out of work coal miners in WV only have themselves to blame? You think a kid growing up in the projects with a single mother crack addict is to blame? Give me a break. If Trump were born into a poor family he at best would have been a street hustler and likely behind bars by now.

I am the son of two high school dropouts. My parents' total income this year will be less than 50k. My oldest brother lives in a mobile home jumping from one dead end job to another when he isn't in jail. Another brother has finally found enough financial success this year to stop living paycheck to paycheck in his forties. I am in my mid thirties, and I have made 450k this year to date (150k in wages and 300k in investments). I was raised in the same home and by the same parents they were. I was given no more than they were. I love my family, but their financial situations are primarily self inflicted. Spare us your lecture on the blight of the poor.

yeah I don't understand why they are so dismissive of people improving their situation. Can be done, it just takes dedication. I am sure we can find just as many rich people screwing it up as your story.

my dad has some similarities with your story. He made sure his kids got what we needed. And thankfully none of us have screwed it up yet.

The ol' "I did it, so anyone can do it" argument.

Good on you. My kids had more money in their college funds before they started pre-k than I had when I graduated high school. It baffles me that people can't ascribe responsibility to individuals with control over their circumstances.

Why doesn't the military move people left?

Because one teaches you discipline, to appreciate things you never thought you would, how to push yourself physically and mentally, etc. The other teaches you to be an indoctrinated, emasculated wuss. What they have in common is you live and work with people from all over.

Because it's regimented is the obvious answer but... you're not going to argue that there is as much cultural diversity in the military as you will find on the average university campus are you? Even at UT, I met people from Brazil, Japan, China and England...

This is a ridiculous and overly cynical take on the college experience... You sound unsophisticated.

Do I need a safe space or be void of using gender specific pronouns to be “sophisticated”? My statement obviously wasn’t a blanket statement but there are issues on colleges campuses that are huge cause for concern. College definitely isn’t what it use to be and not in a good way.
