2017 Vols will have the #1 or #2 ranked DEFENSE in the SEC

Once SEC play starts our defense will be as dominant this year as our offense was dominant last year.

The reason why the offense had to score points is the defense was basically near last in the SEC in most stats. The offense was decent and it won some of the games for the Vol. However, let's talk about last year.... you said the same thing last year.... last year you said the Vols would be the #1 defense and opponents would score 12.8ppg. :eek:lol:

Why should anyone believe you?

If I were to guess, the points per game will probably improve but that is just possibly a function of scheduling i.e. Texas AM not the schedule.

I don't really know what the Vols will do... but if I were guess.. I would guess you are wrong because, well, your record speaks for itself.

Noone does

My bold prediction. Vols will have a top 14 defense in the SEC.

I am confident in safeties and the D line.

LB's and Corners are questionable. GT had about 4 total passes, so we have no idea how the corners will be. They should have improved from last year, but that isn't saying much.

New position coaches everywhere. I'm always excited during the off season, then I see reality. We haven't seen much yet. Got smoked the first game!

Spoken like a reactionary fan with no understanding of the game.

What Georgia Tech does is unique. Thus we were doing things defensively that we're not gonna do against anyone else. Its pretty dumb to draw conclusions about our run defense when we have yet to play our normal scheme against a normal team.

Georgia Tech is an outlier. The only thing we learned last night about our defense is that we better hope we don't play an option team again this year. Other than that we learned NOTHING.

Some things are common to solid defensive play regardless of the opponent or style of play. The defense I watched last night is limited and challenged. We will be fortunate to finish anywhere near the top half of this league defensively. We appear to have made some very poor evaluations on several players. Hoping the youth on this team rises up the depth charts quickly and they pan out. What we are trotting out there now is going to be an OCs wet dream.

You win some and you lose some.

I was right on the money about Daniel Bituli though.

No you weren't. You said the coaches were going to screw him over which OBVIOUSLY wasn't the case. He played well. He didn't play as well as the picture you painted.

HOPEFULLY, the coaches have seen enough to know that Jumper isn't physically strong enough to be a starting MLB. You need a guy who fills the hole quick and stops the RB's momentum with violence. That isn't CJ. He gets drug down field for an extra 3 or 4 yards.

I hope Bituli has earned enough trust to be that guy now.

Moseley was the object of a LOT of abuse on this board over the summer. He played well. I am not sure what the deal is with #8. They said he had a great camp. They said he had gotten his head straight. And still he comes out and doesn't play disciplined football.

UT has plenty of guys who can play nickel. I hope they keep Gaulden at CB until someone else steps up.

I'll actually agree with D4H here (*inwardly shudders at the thought*)...

UT won't have to line up a yard away and worry about having the entire offensive line diving towards them. They won't have to worry about having to watch three different runners in the backfield every single play anymore. That level of mental focus can really take a toll. Teams will surely see the numbers and poor performance by some of the UT players...but there is plenty reason to think UT will be a lot better as we move along. Especially if we see the same level of play again that we saw from Bituli, Gaulden, Moseley, Warrior, and Taylor (On a side note...I actually thought Jumper was serviceable and should really show improvement this season).

Good post. And in addition to those names I was also impressed with KMac. He didn't have much of an impact for obvious reasons but he looked incredibly physical. The kid is in outstanding shape. And he showed his conditioning was great by how many snaps he played. I think he'll be a beast this year once we start playing teams that aren't trying to take out his knees every snap.

My only concern right now with the defense is the corner position opposite Emmanuel Moseley. Justin Martin was a huge disappointment last night. I hope he can get it together but he didn't show anything last night to still have faith in him.

What is your opinion on all our 4/5 stars struggling with a team that has the following 4/5 stars on their roster?

4 star Step Durham - SR (started)

4 star Jordan Woods - R/FR (DNP)

4 star Gentry Bonds - True FR (DNP)

4 star Bruce Jordan-Swilling - True FR (Played)

4 star Kaleb Oliver - True FR (DNP)

4 star Tre Swilling - True FR (DNP)

They don't have any 5 stars.

you really just think it was all about a "weird offense"? No way it was they just out talented us???

You can't be serious?

The reason teams like Georgia Tech run the triple option is because they would have no chance against us if they played real football. Teams run gimmicks like this and the Air Raid to give themselves a chance against teams with better talent.

So what you are saying is for our team to be good we need other teams to run plays that we want to cover? Interesting

The more I look at the talent we have on that side of the ball, the more I like it. On offense I still have concerns about the offensive line and at wide receiver. However, on defense I have zero concerns when it comes to talent or depth. Last year was a fluke for Bob Shoop. Injuries played a large factor and guys like Willie Martinez were trying to undercut his authority. This year I expect to see him look like the elite defensive coordinator he looked like at Penn State and Vanderbilt. Expect the defensive line to be among the best in the nation. Jonathan Kongbo and Darrell Taylor are NFL caliber athletes. Kendal Vickers is a starting caliber NFL DT and Kahlil McKenzie is as talented a one technique as there is. Look out for Justin Martin and Emmanuel Moseley to have huge seasons as well this year. I think both will be All-SEC caliber CBs and NFL draft picks. Also look out for Nigel Warrior and Daniel Bituli to turn into superstars. They might be the two most physically gifted athletes on our defense. I think both will have breakout seasons as sophomores. And finally, expect to see Darrin Kirkland Jr. take on the mantle as the undisputed leader of the defense. He's got a good chance at being a First Team All-American. Overall, the defense will be top 10 nationally and rank first or second (to Alabama) in the SEC.

Just look at the talent and experience we have across the board:

SDE - Jonathan Kongbo (R-Jr.) / Kyle Phillips (Jr.) / Matthew Butler (Fr.)
DT - Kendal Vickers (R-Sr.) / Shy Tuttle (Jr.) / Quay Picou (Jr.)
DT - Kahlil McKenzie (Jr.) / Alexis Johnson (R-Jr.)
WDE - Darrell Taylor (R-So.) / Deandre Johnson (Fr.)

WLB - Darrin Kirkland Jr. (Jr.) / Quart'e Sapp (R-So.) / Cortez McDowell (Sr.)
MLB - Daniel Bituli (So.) / Colton Jumper (Sr.)
SLB - Austin Smith (R-So.) / Dillon Bates (R-Jr.)

CB - Justin Martin (Sr.) / Baylen Buchanan (So.)
CB - Emmanuel Moseley (Sr.) / Cheyenne Labruzza (Fr.)
NB- Rashaan Gaulden (R-Jr.) / Marquill Osborne (So.)
FS - Micah Abernathy (Jr.) / Evan Berry (Sr.)
SS - Nigel Warrior (So.) / Todd Kelly Jr. (Sr.)

The media will look really stupid in December when we are in Atlanta in large part because of a defense that they felt did not have a single player worthy of being voted onto any of the preseason All-SEC defensive teams.

Welp, just like clockwork, there you go again. You say we'll have the best defense in the SEC and, of course, after week 1 we're dead last....by about 3 country miles.

Matter of fact, we're 125th out of 128 teams nationally. Congrats......You're in midseason form already

I checked yesterday. We are 127 of 127 (per sports reference) and Temple is 126 with just over 400 ypg. Awesome

why did GAT struggle so much versus Clemson last year when GAT had more experience with offensive players then this year? Clemson won 26-7 and GAT only rushed for 95 yards or so..

Did talent of Clemson neutralize the scheme last year but our talent couldn't?

Last I checked the season is at least 12 games not 1.

This reminds me of when you took joy in Dobbs bad game against South Carolina last year and was celebrating a little too early about my predictions for his stats that year. And just like clockwork Dobbs turns it on for about as good as a QB can in the month of November and hits exactly the number of TDs and almost the number of yards I predicted.

You're celebrating too early once again. Once we start playing traditional offenses our defense will be lights out. I actually liked most of what I saw Monday night from the defense. We just need to sure up the corner spot opposite Moseley and we need to make Bituli the starter ahead of Jumper and we'll be fine.

We're still gonna be top 2 in the SEC in defense.

LOL. Different year. Different players. Is this your first time following college football? I mean the transitive property from one game to the next is bad but from one year to the next? Yikes. You're showing very poor football knowledge here buddy.

You should know by now that teams can change drastically in one year. And one special player can make a huge difference. Just think about how much better Malzahn's offense was at Auburn when he had Nick Marshall versus when he didn't. He was a genius with Marshall and a guy on the hot seat when he had Jeremy Johnson and Sean White.

This new QB Georgia Tech has is special. He has all the tools to run the triple option as well as it's ever been run at Georgia Tech. Just watch this kid is gonna be Paul Johnson's Nick Marshall. Just watch how good Georgia Tech is THIS SEASON. I think they beat Clemson in death valley this year and they'll win the ACC Coastal.

Triple option is a weird offense. We won't play that defense scheme again this year. Did you watch the game? We had our defensive lineman 2-3 feet off the line of scrimmage in 2-point stances trying to protect their knees from being cut.

We'll be a lot better on the defensive line once we start playing traditional offenses. I was impressed with Kahlil McKenzie and Kendal Vickers last night. Still believe they will have All-SEC caliber seasons. I also believe Shy Tuttle will come back strong against Florida. And the emergence of Darrell Taylor will continue.

We're gonna be lights out on defense this year moving forward.

Riiiiiiiight.

Keep trying.
