Oh sh!t I missed the game?
Of course I watched the game. I haven't missed a game in over 22 years. Guess what? Watching all of that football doesn't make my predictions 100% accurate. I picked the Vols to win 31-16 and I was wrong.
The last 3 words of the previous sentence would be effective if you used them more often.
Spoken like a reactionary fan with no understanding of the game.
What Georgia Tech does is unique. Thus we were doing things defensively that we're not gonna do against anyone else. Its pretty dumb to draw conclusions about our run defense when we have yet to play our normal scheme against a normal team.
Georgia Tech is an outlier. The only thing we learned last night about our defense is that we better hope we don't play an option team again this year. Other than that we learned NOTHING.
If you think last nights game has any reflection on our defense the rest of the year you are sorely mistaken. That was a one off event against a gimmick system that worked pretty well against us.
I still expect our defense to finish top 2 in the SEC by the end of the season. I love the athletes we have on that side now given the emergence of Daniel Bituli and Darrell Taylor. I'm also encouraged by the fact we're starting Nigel Warrior and Micah Abernathy at safety ahead of TKjr.
You're gonna be sorry you bumped this thread the way you did. Its gonna backfire on you in a few weeks when we look godly on defense.

Just to put the OP's math in perspective:
The 2nd ranked defense in the SEC last year gave up 292.8 yards per game. Assuming that a similar number is required to get into the top 2 in 2017, UT must hold their 11 remaining opponents to an average of 260 yards per game.
If you watched the game then I'm sure you saw our defensive lineman lining up 2-3 feet from the line of scrimmage in two point stances. I don't know if you know much about football but you should know that is not how defensive lineman typically line up.
There is nothing you can take away from that defensive performance against Georgia Tech and apply to the rest of the season. We are simply not going to play that way ever again cause we're not playing another triple option team.
Our first glimpse into what kind of defense we will be this year will be against Florida in 2 weeks. I expect you'll actually see our defensive lineman lining up on the line of scrimmage that game and they'll be in the more traditional three point ready to fire off into the offensive line rather than sitting back trying to protect their knees from being taken out.[/QUOTE
Ok, so I can't take away that they hard time not allowing rb's to fall forward. I can't take away Martin plays too far off and takes bad angles to make a tackle. I can't take away our corners had difficulty shedding a block. I can't take away Jumper has heart and is needed but he proved he shouldn't start.
I can't take away Taylor was awesome all game. I can't take away Warrior is solid in the box. I can't take away Gaulden has that never give up mentality. I can't take away McKenzie has increased his endurance level. I can't take away Bituli is the real deal with athleticism galore.
What's messed up is you have a lot of knowledge and put a lot of time into research. It would be nice to see you put that information out in a way that didn't make you come off the way you do.

every SEC team we will face has a better football team than the one we played last night. If you believe this defense will play better versus SEC football teams you are going to be disappointed. Get ready now, that 2,891 rushing yards given up record last year's defense set is going to be broken by this team.
The more I look at the talent we have on that side of the ball, the more I like it. On offense I still have concerns about the offensive line and at wide receiver. However, on defense I have zero concerns when it comes to talent or depth. Last year was a fluke for Bob Shoop. Injuries played a large factor and guys like Willie Martinez were trying to undercut his authority. This year I expect to see him look like the elite defensive coordinator he looked like at Penn State and Vanderbilt. Expect the defensive line to be among the best in the nation. Jonathan Kongbo and Darrell Taylor are NFL caliber athletes. Kendal Vickers is a starting caliber NFL DT and Kahlil McKenzie is as talented a one technique as there is. Look out for Justin Martin and Emmanuel Moseley to have huge seasons as well this year. I think both will be All-SEC caliber CBs and NFL draft picks. Also look out for Nigel Warrior and Daniel Bituli to turn into superstars. They might be the two most physically gifted athletes on our defense. I think both will have breakout seasons as sophomores. And finally, expect to see Darrin Kirkland Jr. take on the mantle as the undisputed leader of the defense. He's got a good chance at being a First Team All-American. Overall, the defense will be top 10 nationally and rank first or second (to Alabama) in the SEC.
Just look at the talent and experience we have across the board:
SDE - Jonathan Kongbo (R-Jr.) / Kyle Phillips (Jr.) / Matthew Butler (Fr.)
DT - Kendal Vickers (R-Sr.) / Shy Tuttle (Jr.) / Quay Picou (Jr.)
DT - Kahlil McKenzie (Jr.) / Alexis Johnson (R-Jr.)
WDE - Darrell Taylor (R-So.) / Deandre Johnson (Fr.)
WLB - Darrin Kirkland Jr. (Jr.) / Quart'e Sapp (R-So.) / Cortez McDowell (Sr.)
MLB - Daniel Bituli (So.) / Colton Jumper (Sr.)
SLB - Austin Smith (R-So.) / Dillon Bates (R-Jr.)
CB - Justin Martin (Sr.) / Baylen Buchanan (So.)
CB - Emmanuel Moseley (Sr.) / Cheyenne Labruzza (Fr.)
NB- Rashaan Gaulden (R-Jr.) / Marquill Osborne (So.)
FS - Micah Abernathy (Jr.) / Evan Berry (Sr.)
SS - Nigel Warrior (So.) / Todd Kelly Jr. (Sr.)
The media will look really stupid in December when we are in Atlanta in large part because of a defense that they felt did not have a single player worthy of being voted onto any of the preseason All-SEC defensive teams.
We have a top 2 SEC defesne. Last night was nothing like we will see ever again. The D will resemble some close to the second half if the UF game last year. No quite that dominant, but close.

So you expect every team on our schedule to change their offense to the triple option?

Last year at this time struggled to score 20 points against App State on offense. Everyone was losing their minds over Dobbs and the pass game. Once SEC play started we went on to shatter the school record for points scored in a season, we finished 2nd in the SEC in points per game, and Dobbs went on to have a record breaking season for TDs scored.
Jumping to conclusions after one game against an unusual opponent is never the smart way to go. Last year at this time it I told you our offense would be record breaking after the abysmal start against App State I'm sure you would be saying the same thing you are saying right now.
Once SEC play starts our defense will be as dominant this year as our offense was dominant last year.
And every onw of those teams LOST. Whats your point? In GT's last 4 games in 2016, they rushed for the following 309, 199, 226, 266 against VA, VA Tech, KY and GA. Yet we had the whole summer to prep and gave up 535 yards.
Something is clearly wrong with our run defense. These "flukes" didn't happen to other teams.
Georgia held a more experienced offensive Georgia Tech team to 226 yards rushing last year. Now they were only the # 5 defense in the SEC last year.
Strange how the # 2 defense in the SEC this year allowed a much less experienced GAT offense who was without their top 2 running backs 535 yards rushing.
I'm certainly glad you have lessened everyone's fears on what the future holds for the Vols the rest of this year.
Thank you.
That justin Martin prediction though..Exactly.
Thing back to how lackluster our offense looked last year in the opener against App State. 13 points in regulation. Only 1 TD scored. Needed a fumble recovery in OT.
Then that offense went on to break school records the rest of the year. I expect to defense to bounce back the rest of the year in similar fashion. Like you said, I believe we'll be top 2 in the SEC when it's all said and done behind Alabama. I'm excited about the defensive line, Bituli, and the safeties.
We're gonna be a dominant defense this year.
