2017: The 5 dumb things Volnation will continually write

I would also like to note that while team 120 did not do as well as the pre-season expectations, they still had (tied for) the second best record in the SEC (8-4), (not including bowls, but having won, they will still be at least tied for second). Only Bama had a better record.

Seen how we witnessed 2 seasons in a row of plenty of blown opportunities of winning the east...their is no reason to believe it gets any better than what we have witnessed. UGA and FL will probably get better. Still haven't beat Muschamp. 2-2 against vandy. Zero faith after 4 yrs

Was gonna stay away til August, but a convo yesterday with a fellow vol fan and I couldn't believe the crap he was saying... so it pulled me back in.

For all the reasons below, I am making the prediction that a lot of this board's mind will explode when Phil Steele will have UT as a top 12 team when it runs its algorithms for next year.

1. "121 is an 8 win team at best" Ha.... Littered with 4 and 5 stars with a ton of experience returning on both lines, a proven 6.5 yd/carry RB, proven receivers... Every team in the East would trade their roster for a healthy UT roster today if they had the chance.

2. "Jones' olines always underachieve... Don't expect much next year" After 2 record setting offensive years, 2 running backs averaging 5-7 yrds/carry (despite many injuries), and the SEC's PASSING TD leader in Dobbs... you would think this narrative would die. Oh, forgot to mention that next year almost everyone returns on the deepest Oline in the SEC (that isn't bamas). Sure, they had a couple mediocre games... and all 5 starters were out vs bama, so we won't count that one. But whose oline do you want next year besides bamas? Not UF, Not UGA, not USC, not LSU, not Vandy, not UK, not A&M (lose both tackles)... UT's oline outperformed all these teams and/or they return more starters.

3. "KMAC, Kongbo, Phillips, and/or Tuttle are busts"
Same people who thought Malone was a bust, and O'brien was a bust, Richmond is a bust, etc... And just because UT had 2 DE's (Vareen and Barnett) that were too good to come off the field, doesn't mean that the guys behind them aren't going to be stars. It's actually how things should be. Don't be surprised if all of them end up on an all-sec team at the end of the year.

4. "121 is a huge talent drop-off" Barnett was special. But JRM and Sutton played a total of 2 healthy games, Malone is a bust :p, and JK didn't look like a huge drop off from Kamara this year. Every position group except RB, DE and QB will be as talented and more experienced next year when you take Sutton and JRM injuries into the equation. The same people who are saying this are the ones who stargaze all the time, but love to assume people are busts when they aren't all americans as freshmen.

5. "Mike Deboard, Stripland, Azzani, and Mahoney are terrible and we can't win with them" Again... record setting offense. And a Dlineman who broke Reggie White's record... Despite the most adversity anyone on this board has ever seen from injuries.

Now here are a couple true statements you will hear :

1. Dobbs will be missed. Hell ya he will... But consistency of the passing game could take a step forward with a qb who is more of a timing thrower.

2. The DBs x, y, z, a, b, c... Fill in the blanks. It really was the thing I was most disappointed with all season. These guys weren't getting "beat" per se. They weren't lacking athletically to keep up.... They just never look back for the GB ball. This is coming from a very glass half full vol. It is unacceptable how many times DBs would be stride for stride with the receivers and just not look for the ball to make a play.

Go Vols. Glad to get a Bowl win where all position groups played well. I have a feeling we have the right combination of confidence and a chip on our shoulder going into this offseason. If we get healthy the East is there for the taking next year.

Look at our schedule for next year... 8 wins is what we can hope for. Maybe I am wrong though because I felt 10 wins this year.

Where to start:

1. List the 4* and 5* players on the roster for next year, not freshman commits.

2. The reason the offense looked as good as it did, is because Josh Dobbs was able to run out of busted plays. If you take away his ability to scramble, the dismal Oline performance, and yes, it was dismal, is even worse.

3. Kongbo has potential, I'll agree, but also looks like he has some 'diva' issues that are probably not going to play out well next year. Shy Tuttle will probably never play at an elite level after the injuries he has sustained. Phillips hasn't proven anything yet other than being a middle of the pack DL. McKenzie can't seem to stay healthy long enough to contribute.

4. You are seriously stretching with this one. The amount of experience alone we are losing is enough to be a drop off, but Dobbs and Kamara are the majority of this offensive production, and Derek Barnett is the only player on this defense that any team had to consistently worry about. Pure orange delusion if you can't acknowledge the talent drop from 2016-2017 starters.

5. Mike Debord/Butch's offense is tired, and predictable, and without a Josh Dobbs to bail out the busted plays, it's going to be painful to watch next year. Azzani isn't a terrible coach, but he isn't a good coach, and elite receivers are not coming to UT while he is here, which is evidenced by our WR recruiting. Mahoney, lol, how anyone can still defend him is tantamount to insanity. He wouldn't even be coaching at the high school level if it weren't for Butch Jones.
This x1000000

Everyone keeps saying how good our offense was. Take away Dobbs and it sucked. Kelly will be a good rb and Jennings will be a threat at WR, but what else do we really have on offense besides Byrd? We don't know who our QB will be and everyone expects JG to be everything Dobbs is and better.

We can't fully gauge the defense, but losing Barnett alone will hurt. Teams had to specifically scheme around him.

We all thought our D was going to be nasty this year, but not the nasty it was.

I can't wait to see how you tuck tail after we have an 8-4 / 7-5 season.

In all honesty, we should probably be happy if the next QB produces 2/3rds the TDs Dobbs produced. I just fear it's going to be Worley 2 Electric Boogaloo. That's not a jab at Worley, it's a jab at the system they forced him to play.

I haven't liked the Butchfense since day one and I think majic73 has analysed its deficiency superbly throughout the season.

What we are going to really miss next year are the TDs Josh Dobbs produced running in the red zone. The number of bad plays he converted into TDs will not be replicated IMHO. Our Red Zone efficiency is likely to take a massive hit. Add to the fact that Medley is wholly unreliable beyond 40 yards, and it's a recipe for a lot less points scored next year.

Hope I'm wrong. GBO.

What's worse is the ones that said they would be happy with 8 wins, they are the same ones that want Butch fired.

Timing was bad this year for a coaching change, year 5 no one can say he didn't have enough time.

Get it together Butch!

Go Vols 2017!

There's no way Butch should be fired. That would be just DUMB. Too many people jump from A to Z or better 0 to 100 without any consideration of steps 2-99.

We've all seen UT make bad hire after bad hire. Finding flaws in a coach does not mean FAHR BUTCH! It means what you said, "Get it together, Butch!"

Plus, firing Butch Jones after this season would make UT look more inept from a national perspective than it already does. Look beyond the "on-field" performance and look at what has made the news out of UT in the last few years:

Gender neutral pronouns
The Christmas debacle from last year
Butt Chugging!
The law professor's tweet about the Charlotte protests

If you want to upgrade the HC in any sport you need to have a plan in place. And it goes beyond throwing cash out there. See the Cleveland Browns for proof. And look how foolish the 49ers look now when just a few years ago they were in the SB.

We finally caught up with Florida in terms of talent AND experience this year...and I think they lose more than we do so I give us the edge on talent against the gators next season...if you look at the 2 deep that was listed for the gators when we beat them this year, they could be losing about 10 off their d...mostly starters...

Georgia may have more talent but I'm not sure thier OL will be any better than this year and they have some gaps on the D...they do get Chubb and Michell back at TB and Eason has a killer arm...still, I like us making it 3 in a row against the dogs next year...

It's really hard to say for certain, but Georgia has a five star QB returning next season who played all year. Georgia's biggest need is at WR. UF has a 5 star QB who redshirted last season. Plus, each team has 4 and 5 star players on both sides of the ball. UT could easily lose to both team, and unless they upset LSU or Bama another season 8-4 could Be on the horizon.

Can't wait to see us have a bad season. Okay explain the logic to me.

8-4 with this staff will be good next season. No use in sugar coating it. Failure to realize how lackluster on field coaching, negative trending in personnel, and limited development will jeopardize future seasons is just simply irrational. Now that is logic I don't understand.

Butch is a horrible coach, if you can't see that then I can see how you can agree with the OP on the negavol train.

Otherwise, for those of you who want the charlatan gone, welcome to the posivol side of the house for wanting what is best for our program.

Take back the language, don't let the miserable people who wallow in our lackluster performance define the argument.

Well it's 2017, and I think we should all come together on this at least. Go Hawkeyes! Flush those baby gators down the crapper and into the sewer! Then we'll kick their teeth in next season when those swamp donkeys try to crawl back out.

6. If we don't give Butch two more years to turn the program around, it will set us back ten years.
