Was gonna stay away til August, but a convo yesterday with a fellow vol fan and I couldn't believe the crap he was saying... so it pulled me back in.
For all the reasons below, I am making the prediction that a lot of this board's mind will explode when Phil Steele will have UT as a top 12 team when it runs its algorithms for next year.
1. "121 is an 8 win team at best" Ha.... Littered with 4 and 5 stars with a ton of experience returning on both lines, a proven 6.5 yd/carry RB, proven receivers... Every team in the East would trade their roster for a healthy UT roster today if they had the chance.
2. "Jones' olines always underachieve... Don't expect much next year" After 2 record setting offensive years, 2 running backs averaging 5-7 yrds/carry (despite many injuries), and the SEC's PASSING TD leader in Dobbs... you would think this narrative would die. Oh, forgot to mention that next year almost everyone returns on the deepest Oline in the SEC (that isn't bamas). Sure, they had a couple mediocre games... and all 5 starters were out vs bama, so we won't count that one. But whose oline do you want next year besides bamas? Not UF, Not UGA, not USC, not LSU, not Vandy, not UK, not A&M (lose both tackles)... UT's oline outperformed all these teams and/or they return more starters.
3. "KMAC, Kongbo, Phillips, and/or Tuttle are busts"
Same people who thought Malone was a bust, and O'brien was a bust, Richmond is a bust, etc... And just because UT had 2 DE's (Vareen and Barnett) that were too good to come off the field, doesn't mean that the guys behind them aren't going to be stars. It's actually how things should be. Don't be surprised if all of them end up on an all-sec team at the end of the year.
4. "121 is a huge talent drop-off" Barnett was special. But JRM and Sutton played a total of 2 healthy games, Malone is a bust
, and JK didn't look like a huge drop off from Kamara this year. Every position group except RB, DE and QB will be as talented and more experienced next year when you take Sutton and JRM injuries into the equation. The same people who are saying this are the ones who stargaze all the time, but love to assume people are busts when they aren't all americans as freshmen.
5. "Mike Deboard, Stripland, Azzani, and Mahoney are terrible and we can't win with them" Again... record setting offense. And a Dlineman who broke Reggie White's record... Despite the most adversity anyone on this board has ever seen from injuries.
Now here are a couple true statements you will hear :
1. Dobbs will be missed. Hell ya he will... But consistency of the passing game could take a step forward with a qb who is more of a timing thrower.
2. The DBs x, y, z, a, b, c... Fill in the blanks. It really was the thing I was most disappointed with all season. These guys weren't getting "beat" per se. They weren't lacking athletically to keep up.... They just never look back for the GB ball. This is coming from a very glass half full vol. It is unacceptable how many times DBs would be stride for stride with the receivers and just not look for the ball to make a play.
Go Vols. Glad to get a Bowl win where all position groups played well. I have a feeling we have the right combination of confidence and a chip on our shoulder going into this offseason. If we get healthy the East is there for the taking next year.
