Brice: 2017's storyline for the Tennessee Vols? Development stages

A snippet from John Brice of 247.....

More importantly, gone are a combined 125 touchdowns from the Joshua Dobbs-Josh Malone-Alvin Kamara trio, not to mention the additional 26 career scores from Jalen Hurd’s midseason bounce session.

This, however, is where Jones’ recruiting through his first four years and his revamped staff’s overall ability to develop talent must rise to the surface.

This is, after all, Year 5 of the bygone ‘Brick by Brick’ era, a slogan no longer allowable because another school owns the copyright, but a mantra that nonetheless resonates with the onset of spring camp roughly seven weeks from its onset.

There are now, officially, only Jones’ bricks in the program. These are his players. These are players he and the coaches he hand-selects are responsible for developing through the years.

Most importantly, this now is fully and wholly Butch Jones’ program. Every hire is his; every scholarship player is his; every ounce of ownership of Tennessee football rests on the shoulders of one Lyle Allen “Butch” Jones Jr.

A class not remotely as top-heavy and certainly not as bottom-heavy as some of those of his predecessor is OK right now; not great, not yet a disaster.

What it is, however, is a mandate on Jones & Co.’s evaluations to this point and developmental abilities moving into the future.

We did miss on some big names we had Tee Higgins HUnter Johnson and Cam Akers. No doubt disappointing to fans and coaches. We did get some big time players and I truly believe many of our 3-4 star kids (some recruiting services differ on star ranking) will be really good players here and help us win many ballgames. There are some reaches we will see on them but this class overall is not as bad as many make it out to be. Now Rock's hire to me is the best recruit of any team a true 6 star coach. He will be the difference on these kids developing to be good SEC ball players.

We have what, 3-4 big time players? Chandler, Smith and Ignont. Maybe Grey. Other than that, the guys are woefully average. You need big time recruiting to win in the SEC. Right now, we aint doing that. It is what it is.

We will probably scrape by with an 8 win season in 2017 and Butch will save his job once again. Rinse and repeat. At this point, we are an average team with below average coaching and below average player execution.

Totally your opinion. I see many good football players in this class. The problem is you look at star i look at film. I'm not saying that I would not have loved to have those three 5 star kids we missed on. But dont label class a failure because of a star. Their are alot of teams behind us that would swap their 3 stars for ours in a heart beat. Their not all equal.

Shamburger and Labruzza could've been 4 stars easily. Butler it's a mystery as to how he's not a 4 star. Murphy is a great receiver that could be a 4 star as well. Bennett has a 5* offer list. Chandler is an absolute monster, if he camped even a little bit he would be a 5*. Crosby, Ignont, Gray and obviously Smith are all beasts. If this is Butch's worst class I'm definitely okay with that added some nice depth with a couple difference makers as well as a few projects.

Player development is for every player regardless of stars.

Agree. All players have to work, learn and execute to become better players. However, some coaches/staffs have a better skill/knack for it than others in helping players reach their potential and the "worse" the signing class is on paper, the more important the player development skills of the staff become. I think that was the point Brice is making.....based on what this class looks like, Jones and company need to up their player development game, which is something many fans and media have said has been lacking for awhile now.

I agree.I think there's quite a few of our 3 stars that shoulda been 4 stars.Page is also another one that I think shoulda been a 4 star.I don't think we need anybody in this class to play immediately. Warren will improve our secondary drastically IMO.The only players in this class that will play as freshman are Trey Smith and Ty Chandler. It's gonna boil down to Canales ability to get either QD or JG ready to roll.

I'm holding for the best, excited by a lot like the QB change. But wouldn't be shocked to hear this by the end of the 2017 season....

"But but but it's the new offensive coaching change and a new defense coaching change last year that caused us to not perform this year."

Yes some of this talent may be rated low. We can only hope the coaching staff knows sees something we don't- beyond the stars
