Was he ever punished? The victim even said to let him go forward and I'm a firm believer in second chances. What he did was horrid, but hopefully he goes forward and does good things for people in life. That's at least what I hope he does.

No, not really. Only "punishment" was a redshirt year. Agree with everything else you say. But that's some egregious stuff that's difficult to square with when you take the decision to ball up your fist to punch a female in the face.....major character flaw. Maybe this guy puts it behind him and does good things now. We'll see.
