2016 Starting Safeties

Unless either Gaulden, Jennings, or Byrd are moved to safety, the starters have to be Berry and Kelly. Plus Warrior rotating in at both positions. Who else do they have that can play safety? Does that mean we see one of the three mentioned players moved, being it is a necessity of SEC play to be two deep across the board?

Griffin has seen the field playing safety for us.

I think I saw that M. Calloway could get consideration as safety.

We don't have to decide it right now; obviously we'll know more after evaluations this spring and in August.

Jennings is the best safety on the team. Jennings, TKjr, Berry all have All american potential. TKjr has a knack for the ball and creates turnovers.

So Jennings is the "best safety on the team", even though he's not yet so much as taken as single rep at the safety position at Tennessee? There's much more to playing the position than just being very athletic and wanting to hit people on special teams. He may well get moved there and prove to be a great safety in time....but it's foolish to make that statement right now.

KBvol,

I appreciate the response. You are correct that Jennings has never taken a snap at safety during his time at Tennessee. However from what I've seen just of him on special teams and even WR tells me he is most likely the best safety on the team and will be an imposing player in the defensive backfield if the coaches chose to put him there. I am confident in my knowledge of football and have an eye for talent, whether it be sports or girls, heehee. I say all this in a humble time and thanks for your response.

Understand, not trying to necessarily flame here. I agree that Jennings is a phenomenal athlete...but so is Berry, and he's gotten very little time to date at safety. Just saying I want to see a guy play, understand and perform at a position before declaring him the best....especially when he's yet to play that position to date. Jmo.

Cam may slide back to safety some depending what we dial up the first part of the season.

This discussion will be decided by people much smarter and more informed than fans. Our scheme will be different under Shoop and he will know who fits his plan better than us. I look forward to how creative the staff will get with the talent we have on hand!

GO VOLS!!!!

Byrd said on the radio today he might be moved to safety, so he may likely have a say here at the least

Wherever they decide to put Byrd...S,WR,CB..he will play early and probably start 2nd year..guy may be the best athlete in this class

If one of the true fresh are starting that is bad.

You guys place way too much confidence in fresh recruits. Khalil was the #1 player in the nation by one service and he still needed most the season to get up to speed.

Please, get over it.
Starting safeties are TKjr. And Griffin/Berry

No, I say things like that because I know football and watch all the games.

Martins good but I saw nothing that made me think he's better than Cam whom was projected to be drafted. I mean I hope you're right bc if hes better than Cam this season they'll both be high draft picks

He was the #1 ranked athlete in the country on most of the recruiting services if I remember correctly.

One thing about Jennings to safety that I have been thinking is having played WR and QB in high school, he may have a good instinct to read and anticipate where the ball is going to be.

I think we're in a great position to have some great DBs at our disposal. Martin is no slouch, and I don't think Moseley is either... just two different types of corners. The depth is great, and I think all of our DBs will shine this fall.

Teams SHOULD have a hard time throwing against us next season with Cam, RG, Martin, Moseley, Foreman, Abernathy, DMiller, Byrd, Osborne, and Buchanan in the fold. That's some amazing depth!

I think our starting safeties will be TKjr & Berry, with a lot of reps for Griffin, Warrior, and maybe even some Abernathy.

Has Jauan Jennings' potential move to safety been ruled out by the staff yet? If not, I'd like to see it happen if other receivers can step up this spring/summer.
Berry may start but if he doesn't get a lot better we will see a jumper/ kirkland sich.
