I know these salary numbers have been shared before, but I wanted to see how they compare to some of the names being bandied about as possible replacements...and it sounds increasingly likely that we're going to have substantial turnover.

FWIW, as a group UT's assistant coaches were the 9th-best paid in college football this year.

Salaries only, in '000s
1. Shoop $1,155
2. Thigpen $505 (up $155 since '13)
3. DeBord $500
4. Gillespie $480 (up $175 since '13)
5. Stripling $410 (up $25 since '13)
6. Martinez $395 (up $110 since '13)
7. Scott $375
8. Mahoney $365 (up $10 since '13)
9. Azzanni $355 (up $50 since '13)

Interestingly, the three coaches from Jones' 2009 CMU staff (Stripling, Mahoney & Azzanni) have seen the lowest salary increases while at UT. Their combined salaries in '09 were just $254,000.

LWSVOL has mentioned that it seems UT has $1.5-1.8 million to spend on OC/QB coaches.

2016 salaries for prospective assistants ('000s)
* QB coach Chris Weinke: unknown
* QB coach Mike Canales: $179
* DB coach George Barlow: $260
* DB coach Terry Fair: $148
* DL coach Brady Hoke: $404

I see so much money up there, yet look at our results. It's amazing. Almost sickening. The fact that our staff is the 9th most paid in college football is a joke.

I looked around and found these two articles that rank the best coaching staffs in college football. Obviously it is their opinion, but gives us some comparisons.

Best College Football Coaching Staffs Heading into 2016 Season | Bleacher Report

Expert Poll: Ranking College Football's Best Coaching Staffs in 2016

We come in at #7 and #12. So it seems that we actually do have a solid staff, they just underperform year end year out. I have not seen much development from WRs under ZA, OL under Mahoney, or LBs under Thig, but I know he is our best recruiter. DBs under Martinez are one of our biggest weaknesses, he needs to be fired ASAP. I do like RG, Shoop, Stripling, and Scott though. I believe all those guys have shown promise and developed players better than others.

Butch is loyal in that he has trouble firing people that he has known for a while. I've thought for a couple of years now he holds dollars on Z and Mo trying to encourage them to look around. I expect Mo to get a job this week in Nashville. guess we will see.

Things are about to get moving as far as staff. we should be see results next 7-10 days

Kinda sobering to see that the combined salaries for App State's nine assistants were 130K less than Shoop's salary, and yet they went toe-to-toe with us with a whole lot less talent to work with.

All coaches are loyal to a point with those they have worked with. The same is true in business. Folks get a job and take those they trust with them. Most find it hard to fire someone period and when it is someone that they trust and have moved up the ranks with - it more difficult.

You make is sound like it should be easy, almost second nature. Never met any manager who found firing someone to be easy.

It seems absurd what he said. Anyways I agree with what you said.

its not easy. Had to do it many times. It was never easy even when I knew that was the right thing to do.

sure didn't mean for it to sound that way either.

By results do you mean the vacancies on staff will be filled in 7-10 days?

TIA

Yes. This puts things into a real-world perspective that is at times lost on fans.

think most changes if not all will be over in that time frame. I believe he wants new staff in place for recruiting.

Lots of folks believe we need an AD in place before these staff changes are made. Is it safe to say that Butch has been given the authority to fill out his 2017 staff by someone in charge over there?

Unless we hire an unproven, I would expect the replacements for Debord, Mahoney and Martinez to significantly exceed the $1.3 million of their salaries by $300,000-700,000.

1. Use a job review to define expectations and possible remedies to their procedures.
2. Allow sufficient time for the employee to evaluate his procedure changes and modify as he thinks best.
3. If the employee can not meet expectations take him to lunch and buy him a steak. After the food is gone, tell him. And give a thick termination personnel packet that includes the materials from the evaluations defining where he is and why; his future options with the company...(transfer to less responsibility? or none and why); for insurance, 401K, job search help offered, etc.

He knows he's had time to fix the problem(s). He knows he couldn't meet expectations and that it's coming. That's the important issue and the crux of your decision. Let him know you tried to help, you gave him resources and time. He just couldn't do it. You also have to meet expectations so you have no choice. Hard to do, but better than saying, "You failed, you're fired". That's the best way I know for someone to leave (loudly) with a chip on their shoulder.

So how long does an assistant get? Four games? A whole season?

Azzani, the lowest salaried assistant, still making too much. And the ROI for Shoop has to be the worst in the country. Pay Gillespie whatever it takes, promote Scott to OC and hang onto to Thig if possible. The others can go.

yes. that is not a stumbling block at all for him hiring someone.

it does impact some wanting to come here ( I haven't heard of specific cases) but there are coaches who would not move into this situation where they didn't know if a new AD was supportive of the head coach or not. I would not be surprised if some Butch called just told him not interested because of the uncertainty.

That is a easy assumption to make since Butch checked out other jobs because he was not certain of the AD.

From pool watching to OC making $500k? Seems pretty good to me. Besides, Shoop actually has a good track recrod.

Go ask anyone in this country which unit performed better. Then ask them to guess which coordinator made 3X more than the other.
