Shocking Tennessee numbers: 2016 highest scoring offense in history

Dobbs directed a Tennessee’s offense to a record-breaking season, as the Vols scored more points (473) and touchdowns (63) than any season in history.

Gotta say this came as a complete shock to me. I have not always been very supportive of Debord and have cursed many a time when it seemed so obvious the next 3 plays would be "hand off to Hurd to run up the middle", then punt. I cussed him for not using Kamara more, for not opening up the field for breakaway plays and so many other things. That said, you dont get the most points and TDs in all of TNs entire history without some kind of serious coaching ability - especially considering the multitude of injuries we have had.

On the one hand I am really happy to hear this, on the other, so friggen frustrated. How could we have such an awesome season offensively and still end up losing 4 games, to USCjr and VANDY for heaven's sake?!?!!?! In a word, Defense or lack thereof. But considering CBJ brought in one of the most vaunted DC hire in the country, starting the season we had what seemed to be a killer D - I mean Barnett broke Reggie friggen White's sack record (in ONLY 3 years).

I just dont know how to feel. Hard not to give CBJ some serious credit for getting us here and yet not be a bit angry at him for how the season ended up - good but not the greatness that seemed just within reach. Of all the things, I do think injuries + Hurd's primadonna poison cost us those two games we should have won. Both are things Butch should have addressed earlier (S&C coach and yanking Hurd's chain) :hmm:

Injuries on defense were devastating. Period.

It's easy to say "fire the coaches" when in reality most were just horrible luck. A S&C can't help an injury from happening when a 300 LB guy rolls on your leg/ankle.

It was combination of things including our 5*'s blowing up the team in the middle of the season and massive injuries to all the wrong people at the wrong times. Add on top that Butch was still "getting there" as a top tier SEC coach (but he learns fast). In short it all comes down to we weren't ready yet, as much as people wanted to buy into the hype, we honestly just were not ready yet. Our depth was too young, our experience too self centered, and our coach still had a few lessons to learn about when to go for it and why. This is all going to come together very nicely in the next couple of seasons if Jones can keep it together and not crack. Think about the core group of reterning experience and lessons learned this season.

Some of those big numbers were against VA Tech, Florida, Nebraska and Texas A&M. Run up against an easy schedule. :zeitung_lesen:

How did this shock anyone? Other than games against Bama, SC, and AP State the offense wasn't the problem this season. In fact, the defense was so bad at times Dobbs and the offense won several games for UT.

This had nothing to do with DeBord. The guy is still a terrible offensive coordinator that needs to be replaced.

This was all Dobbs, Kamara, and Malone.

It took until we fell behind 2-3 TDs in most games to get the offense going. That lets me know we had poor gameplanning and only found success after we got desperate and let Dobbs wing it.

But this year's team is the only UT team to play any easy teams like KY...
All other UT teams only played power 5 teams ranked in the top 10. That's obviously the only way this offense could've set the record.

Or maybe, just maybe teams will adjust as they see what defenses are doing?
I know you're the KING of watching film but did you know that sometimes coaches call plays early on to set things up for later? And here's a real shocker, sometimes teams you play change their defense up quite a bit when they face you and you have to make adjustments from what you were expecting...

Easy schedule? I would debate that with you, but there haven't been other teams that had "easy" schedules? Give credit where it is due. Yes, this team was frustrating in so many ways, but the offense was pretty darn good most of the season.

I bet if you look at other schools they are performing similar. Offensives have changed much like they did when Spurrior arrived in Florida. Sighn of the times.

Exactly.

Almost everyone is running hurry up, spread variation offenses now.

A lot of offensive records will continue to fall.

Not to mention how many plays teams are running. I feel safe in saying that this season also set a record in # of plays from scrimage. As long as bama is around, TOP, scoring efficiency, and sustained drives are the key to success. Everyone is doing tempo, so that advantage is all but negated.

Scoring points was NOT a problem for Team 120 (with the exception of vs Bama). TURNOVERS lost the TAM and USCe games. Then we fixed our turnover problem (after South Carolina), but the defense was terrible (largely due to injuries).

I give Shoop and Jones a lot of credit for getting a decent defensive showing against Nebraska with essentially the same personnel.

UN was w/out their starting QB. But, your statement was my exact mindset going into that game. I was thinking that if Shoop allowed our interior run defense to get slashed so bad that it looks like were playing with 9 defenders, then he can't possibly be the man for the job. After a month of practice and game planning anyway. I was impressed.

Get our interior lineman back for 17 and we may be OK.

The issue with team 120 was inconsistent play. We were loose with the ball on offense and ran hot and cold and as for defense we struggled keeping the ball in front of us, too many big pass plays and to many gash run plays.

Get it together for 2017!

The 2016 offense could make a legitimate claim to being our 2nd-most prolific ever, runner-up to our Heath Shuler-led 1993 offense. The 1997 offense was also up there among our best and in a different era, the 1951 offense (51 TDs in 10 games) was notable.

Total scoring & points per game are unadjusted for defensive & special-teams scores.

2016 (13 games)
* total scoring: 473 points
* points per game: 36.4
* offensive TDs: 59
* yards: 5768
* yards per game: 443.7
* yards per play: 6.44

1997 (12 games)
* total scoring: 411 points
* points per game: 34.3
* offensive TDs: 50
* yards: 5794
* yards per game: 482.8
* yards per play: 6.58

1993 (11 games)
* total scoring: 471 points
* points per game: 42.8
* offensive TDs: 58
* yards: 5286
* yards per game: 480.5
* yards per play: 6.94

Interesting sidenote: From 2000-2014, UT never had more than 21 rushing TDs in a season and we averaged just 1.3 rushing TDs per game. But with 32 rushing TDs last year and 31 this year, we've averaged 2.4 per game.

Given the stats above and calculating yards/yards per play/games played, UT ran more plays per game in 1997 and 1993 than 2016, but not by much.

Fahr Debord..... only reason offense was any good is because Dobbs made plays after Debord called s****y plays

Have to upgrade speed and technique in defensive backfield and linebacker. Vols have no lock down corner, safeties are too slow to come up in run defense (especially on edges) and LBs struggled with interior running game and could not get to sidelines on sweeps. Really need Warrior and Osborne to develop and for Byrd to move to CB.

DeBord had a great year and the offense played on a Championship level with the exception of the 2nd half of Vandy and USC games. Injuries to the OL made play calling vs Bama impossible.
