2016 Election

It is maddeningly inefficient, but it is also in some sense built to move slowly. I'm not sure Trump can deal with that. I'm not sure he even understands it.

So I finally have the chance to retort with a better keyboard...

Anyway, the government being inefficient is only part of the problem. Them allowing contractors to drag their feet and continuing to pay out on work makes me even more angry. Case in point...

The road leading to my house from the Interstate is under construction. And has been that way since last October. They needed to put in a new bridge (that got done in April) and expand the road from two lanes to four. And we're talking about a mile stretch here.

And finally, almost a year later, have a single side of it open and are just laying the bedding for the other side. Now I can understand the weather had some to do with it with the Noah's flood we received this spring. But should it take over a year to build a mile stretch of road? You can't tell me they aren't dragging their feet (and doing a fairly piss poor job as well since part of the road is already getting potholes) and milking the system for as long as they can and still drawing a check. And I realize there is far more about it like government regulators that come in and bring construction to a screeching halt because of not hurting the spotted western farting field mouse or whatever. But the entire system lends itself to inefficiency.

And this is just on a local scale since it's a county road and not even a State or Federal highway. It gets even worse (as you've noted before in other threads) when you start talking Interstates. This is just one minor example of contractors taking advantage of the government inefficiency as well as the government inefficiency allowing them to get away with it.

Now the question is how to fix it. Would Trump be able to fight against government inefficiency? Can he streamline actions? Cut departments that are hampering the process? Hold contractors accountable?

Interesting questions to be answered.

I was wondering if you recall how he managed to get his message out, though. People don't buy in without exposure. I don't recall him spending his own money to advertise (initially). The only recollection i have is Perot became Larry King's pet project.

IIRC he bought a tremendous amount of television ads. I think he bought at least one 30 minute slot in prime time. He also got a lot of airtime on the network news, I think due to his charts gimmick.

Who knows why people buy into a candidate?

He did buy air time. I recall that being later in his campaign. I don't recall if he used his own money or if he received campaign donations by then. That's why i was careful to ask about his initial publicity.

I think we're talking a little past each other. But, i appreciate you sharing your memory of his candidacy. I'll cease with derailment.

That I do not recall either.

That was an unusual campaign. We had Perot with his charts, Bill's adulterous lifestyle, and H W looking at his watch in one of the debates.

After Desert Storm I thought H W would win re-election by a landslide. Politics is a weird business.

Over a year between Desert Storm and the election.

An eternity in politics.

One of the reasons we got Slick Willie. The other electable dem candidates thought HW was unbeatable after Desert Storm and didn't run.

I'd love it if he were right, and that all it took is someone with a strong personality in the Oval Office to start yelling at people about it and the "system" would wake up and start moving expeditiously.

Roads would suddenly spring up, bridges would be re-built in a matter of days, not months or years. Passport applications would be processed in a week, not 5 months. "The wall" he speaks of would spring up out of nowhere inside of a year. He'd just give ISIS hell, and they'd quit. He'd bluster at Iran, and they would cower in the corner and give up nukes and give us cheap oil.

I just don't think that is realistic. And it would just make him so mad I think he'd have a brain aneurysm about a week into it.

I have a conspiracy theory side of myself that i have to keep in check otherwise it will get out of hand. BUT.... HW's polls and approval ratings shouldve meant he was indestructible. I could buy in to someone saying media members who identify with Democrats propped up Perot and gave him unprecedented publicity for a 3rd party candidate. They knew the only hope to elect the "man from Hope" was to pull off votes from HW with a 3rd party person.

Is anyone else alarmed that when asked about foreign policy Trump said he gets his information from watching the news and thinks that John Bolton would be a good place to go for advice?

Bolton is probably the biggest neocon out there. He'd have us back in Iraq, Afghanistan, and probably a few other places, if given half a chance. He's deranged, imo.

Alarmed?

Why?

Were you alarmed when Obama, a junior senator with no experience in anything won the Democratic nomination?

Of course not, because he had a D beside his name.

LG your hypocrisy is astounding.

I can't say I disagree with this post.

Now the real question is, how does the system get fixed? You know as well as I do its over regulated to hell and back. And you know government contractors aren't going to stop out of the kindness of their hearts. So the government is the only place it can start.

Someone needs to sit down with Trump and have a no holds barred question and answer session. Ask the tough questions about how he would reform the monstrosity the government has become. How would he deregulate industry. How would he limit the power of government. How would he deal with immigration and defense. And not accept generic soundbite answers. Get the real answers the people want.

ETA: I really hate autocorrect
