ok guys now that theyre all inked lets get some waaay too early predictions going. mine are limited to the freshmen only not juco guys. heres what im thinking...

freshman of the year- Gaulden. kid is a sick playmaker who would have been ranked much higher without an injury his junior year. also wins my freshman defensive mvp obviously.

offensive mvp- malone. have to think with his size and skillset he will be able to contribute immediately much the same as j hunter his freshman year. didnt hunter have like 7 tds on about 30 catches? i see similar numbers for malone.

best overall career at UT- Helm. im in love with this dudes game at the TE position. i really think hes a tyler eifert type who is gonna be deadly. best thing a young developing qb like we have can jse is a safety valve at te and this is the man for the job. i think he leaves UT as our most productive TE ever.

Top lineman freshman year offense or defense- thomas. were already hearing rave reviews about him and with a wide open line i think he gets major pt.

the JRM award for special teams play by a freshman- Elliot berry. he reminds me alot of JRM. hes fast and explosive but hes a tweener and needs some weight room time and development to find his position but until then he will be a beast on special teams.

sleeper recruit- cant decide between jakob johnson and lil mosely. both werent highly recruited but the coaching staff loves both of them. with them both being ee's and both already making huge strides i cant decide between them. my head says jakob because of his build but heart says mosely because he seems like he has a ton to prove. both will be solid in my book though.

what do yall think?

Freshman of the year: Jalen Hurd or Todd Kelly Jr. I think Malone will be hampered by our QB situation and WR depth, whereas Hurd and Kelly will both likely start by the middle of the season.

Offensive MVP: Dontavious Blair. JUCO starter from Day 1 at a critical position.

Best overall career at UT: Todd Kelly Jr. Potential four-year starter and future All-American.

Top lineman freshman year offense or defense: Derek Barnett. With his size and strength, he may be forced to play early at SDE or DT. Coach Stripling emphasized today that it's unfair to expect any of the freshman lineman to contribute immediately, but Barnett probably has a better chance than any of them.

The JRM award for special teams play by a freshman: Dillon Bates. His father was one of the greatest NFL special teamers ever, and he probably won't crack the starting lineup his first year.

Sleeper recruit: Rashaan Gaulden. His incredible tackling ability will help tremendously against spread run teams, which was a major weakness in last year's secondary.

Defensive Player: Kelly. I think he can earn the starting SS spot.
Offensive Player: Malone (over career)
Best Overall Career: C.Thomas
JRM Award (SP Teams): Bryant (not counting Medley b/c he is obvious)
Sleeper: Paulk (i think he explodes in 2015/2016)

Jalen reeves-maybin award?

i just thought because of his performance on special teams last year that i would name it after him since he was the only freshman who had that kind of impact on sp teams i could think of off the top of my head.

Offensive freshman MVP: Hurd. Extremely rare to have his athletic ability with his size, strength & speed. Definitely a blue chip prospect.

Defensive freshman MVP: Bates. Has all the instincts & play making ability to play early. Don't see anybody that would keep him off the field.

Best career: Hurd. Expect him to go down in the books as one of the greatest to tote the rock in UT history.

Sleeper: G Bryant. Not really a sleeper but not as highly rated as some.

His film is ridiculously impressive & he has all the tools to be great. Explosive, hard nosed, athletic linebacker we've been sorely missing.

Interestingly, one of the coaches pulled out the A word for this kid. Said he could end up being "Al Wilson like". Whoa.
Love the fact that he spurned Alabama and Auburn offers from the sticks of Jackson, AL.

Freshman of the Year: Jalen Hurd. He will need to be as advertised for our running game to be effective. Can't wait to see him suit up in the spring game and beyond

Defensive Player: I'm going to say Weatherd since it didn't say freshman. Weatherd should start at either OLB spot or LEO and I'm not sure others will start. I'd love for TK and a DL or two start, but I'm not too sure on that just yet. Freshman defensive player, I'll go with Hendrix. I think he has the best chance to start with TK.

Offensive Player: This year it will be Hurd or Pearson IMO. Both will be huge parts of the team's success.

Best Overall Career: I'm going to go out on a limb and say Evan Berry. I'm not going to re mention Hurd, and we all know Malone, TK, Bates, etc should be as advertised. I'm thinking Evan will be a shutdown CB and could start as early as his sophomore year.

JRM Award (SP Teams): Cortez McDowell. Absolute killer. He head hunts out there and will be pushing for a starting S spot along with TK and Rashaan.

Sleeper: I've always been a HUGE Coleman Thomas fan, but since a lot have mentioned him I'm going to say Jashon Robertson. The dude had 1-2 other listed offers, a consensus middle to high 3*. His film is really impressive and I think he can be successful on either line (OL or DL). His calling is probably OG though.

I think Vic Wharton will get the JRM Award. I think people overlook him sometimes because he's not real big. Think of Devrin Young only faster & quicker (!) I think about a dozen of these incoming freshmen will be a huge part of our 2014 season with Bates, Kelly, Malone, Hurd, Gaulden, Weatherd & Thomas leading the way.

He's 5'11...much bigger than DY.

Freshman of the Year: Hurd. Cause he's a beast and he's going to move the chains like beasts do.

Defensive Player: This is tough because we have so many options. But I'm going with Charles Mosely (unless of course he ends up switching to offense, which I don't think is going to happen). He's too big and too athletic not to make an impact. He has so much more swagger and confidence than Dan McCullers could even dream of. He may need a year to develop and get stronger. But him and Sawyers will probably walk in and be the best DT's on the team immediately.

Offensive Player: Pick your poison. But I'm going with Hurd... because see freshman of the year post above.

Best Overall Career: Hurd. Shine on you crazy diamond. Shine on.

JRM Award (Awesome name for this): Todd Kelly Jr. It may be hard to get on the field early for him. But he's gonna force the coaches hand early in the season by making unreal plays on special teams. I would actually like to see him return kicks.

Sleeper: Creamer.

Freshman of the year: Jakob Johnson (vocal leader, stud LB. Very raw but I think the talent will be evident early and the coaches put him on the field)
Defensive Player: Gavin Bryant (if he makes it on campus, I think he will see a lot of time on field as a freshman)
Offensive Player: Lavon Pearson (has all the tools to make a big impact early)
Best Overall Career: Jalen Hurd (no explanation needed)
Special Teams: Dillon Bates (Will be great on kick off coverage)
Sleeper: Coleman Thomas (our most athletic OL, will find playing time early)

Like your "Sleeper pick". I had no idea Creamer was as big as he is. Seeing the pics from the EE's with their jersey's on in Neyland yesterday....dude is HUGE! Will be interesting to see what position he settles in at.
