Glad you were able to learn a valuable lesson from it
Me too. It's a lesson that I think applies to Adonis Thomas and Jarnell Stokes as well, if he were to decide to jump. If the only college players that jumped to the NBA early were players that every fan thought was ready, we'd have about 5 non-seniors per draft class.
You really believe Hall and Woolridge were 4* players? Tatum had the talent, but was killed by knee injuries that sapped any explosion on his drive and jumpshot. He was never a 4* player after his freshman season.
Stokes, McRae, and Golden are the only three guys who could get PT on top 25 teams from this year's team.
I agree 100%
I'd say there were Michigan fans saying Burke wasn't ready
My point is you can't call Martin the "do more with less" guy when he can't get the talent out of these players. Hall and Woolridge had the tools to be successful, didn't happen. Golden and Stokes have also struggled mightily in long stretches this season. McRae is the only player in the last two years that has exceeded expectations.
The kids can do whatever they want, Lord knows I did some crazy stuff when I was 20, but Trey Burke made a dumb move. National player of the year, top 5 pick in this years draft. Next years draft will be much stronger, he might not be the first point gaurd taken.
He wasn't USC's first choice. You're nuts if you believe that. Dixon turned it down before Pastner and other coaches who were of more interest were busy coacing their teams in the tournament (Shaka Smart) to ackowledge they had been contacted.
In the grand scheme of things, anyone can "turn down" a job as a means of trying to secure a raise and extension. Doesn't mean they were ever a serious candidate or had an opportunity to take the job. Pearl's "flirtation" with Arizona and Memphis come to mind.
He wasn't contacted directly, he couldn't be because he was coaching in the tournament. He did have a family member contacted before anyone else, including Dixon, was contacted however. This is why Pastner said there was never an offer. Not arguing who's the better coach, just saying he was the first coach on their (USC) list (unofficially contacted).
Being contacted first doesn't necessarily equate to being the first choice. The order in which each was contacted could be a matter of logistics.
Yeah, you're probably right. They just wanted to talk to his dad in case all the first choices weren't interested. I don't know if he was first or not. I know his name came up immediately and they found a way to check his interest level. He was also on the short list for UCLA.
Look, he's a young coach with a lot of upside. I know he's not a top 25 coach because he hasn't advanced very far in the tournament. A lot of schools would take the chance since he's got a ton of potential. That and the fact that he's a great recruiter makes him fairly highly sought after. I know most on here hate him because he's at Memphis but he gets a lot of interest when there are openings. It's going to be hard for schools like USC to get him since he's now making over 2 mil a year. With California taxes, that would equate to about 1.2 - 1.5 mil.

I don't really think there's that much upside, because I just don't think he's a good coach. That's obviously just me, but I don't see him making an Elite Eight the way Cal seemed to do with regularity.
Yeah, after his first year people were saying that he'd never make the NCAAs and that his top recruiting class was a fluke.
Before last season people were saying that he'd never win an NCAA game and that he couldn't beat a top 25 team.
I dunno about Elite 8 wins, but I wouldn't bet against the guy, especially now that he's going to a conference where you won't get a 6 seed for going undefeated. It's pretty clear to me that he's improving as a coach.
