2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

What confuses me is some of the same who bash UT fans for having high expectations of the BB program and for pointing out CCM's lackluster accomplishments so far is bashing Pastner and Memphis fans for not having those same expectations. yet he's at least going to the big dance.

For what it's worth. I'm happy with Pastner at Memphis. I agree that with the right coach they would be a pure beast.

Pastner does a really good job recruiting the city of Memphis. I'm not sure that a better coach at Memphis would be bad for UT if he didn't recruit Memphis as well as Pastner.

I honestly don't think Pastner and Cuonzo are even comparable. Pastner is obviously not a very good in game coach, which is evident when you look at the fact that the farthest he's ever made it is the 2nd round with the talent he has there. You can't even tell if he's a good recruiter either, due to the fact that his program is in one of the biggest recruiting hotbeds in the nation. Not to mention, he inherited a great program from Cal. Cuonzo, has proven to be a DECENT recruiter, and a pretty good in-game coach. Cuonzo has been overachieving with the talent he's had IMO, while Pastner underachieves time and time again. Give me a choice and i'd take Zo all day.

THIS^^^^^ is exactly what I'm talking about.

There is no doubt he has had a lot of high recruiting rankings on his roster the last few years (including some not from Memphis....Barton, Goodwin, Iverson, Powell). Most of the "under achievers" are city of Memphis recruits (is it the players or the coach?).

While it was a "great program" while Cal was there, he did leave Josh with no roster, a program on probation and massive expectations (all reasons why Memphis had to "settle" on Josh at the time). He was an inexperienced HC and I think the admin and fans knew it would be a learning process for him. The amount of depth he has next year will rival any depth Cal ever had, though the starting 5 won't be what Cal had during the 4 year run.

Bruce left Tennessee with a program on the rise as well. I would think if either of the two coaches (Martin/Pastner) don't show improvement over the next 2 years, the seats will be hot.

:twocents:

I never left. The "Pastner staying at Memphis" (as if he was ever going somewhere else) post was posted and all the UTK fans lost interest. I can't argue with myself, as hard as I've tried.

Nah, I hear ya. As soon as I read the post your replied, I knew...

Did you forget the part were Cal took his entire class to UK with him leaving Josh with basically nothing?

hate to say it but i'm thrilled to see him go, his slot frees up more playing time for King, Iverson, and Nichols. The way he's played so far equals a career overseas imo.

Has thought process changed on Iverson? Last I heard seemed most didn't think he would qualify.

Also, what the deal with Tarik?

Iverson's eligibility still uncertain at this point.

Tarik hasn't decided yet but i kind of hope the transfer rumors are true. He's hindered Shaq's development and he can be a head case at times.

The Pookie concern was news to me, first I heard of that was today.

What's up with Tarik?

Pookie looks a bit iffy, that's why we've reached out to Dre Mathieu.

Tarik is iffy too, rumors of transfers. He can be eligible right away. I hope he doesn't, because that leaves a huge hole in our frontcourt.

He apparently is on pace to graduate this year

I thought the SEC adopted a rule that made that type of transfer impossible. It was after Jared Massolli transferred to ole miss.

It may have not ever happened but it would eliminate transfers like that. For instance, John Fields would not have been eligible to transfer and play at UT in 2010-11.

Again, this may not have happened but I remember it being in talks.

Maybe football only? Julius Maya transferred into Kentucky just last year.
