Tyler Bray- (QB) Bray is coming off of an injury to his throwing thumb. His play before the injury last year was very impressive. He showed great progress from his Fr.-Soph. years and apparently has become more of a leader in the offseason as well, which is what you want to see from your QB. Bray did not come back and perform like he did before the injury, but hopefully with an offseason to rest and recover, as well as the new weapons he will have at his disposal in 2012 on offense, Bray will return and be an All-SEC caliber player for us.
Da'Rick Rodgers- (WR) Our offensive player of the year from 2011, Da'Rick showed he can be a true #1 option at WR after the injury to Hunter. There is no question he is a freakish athlete and a dynamic playmaker on offense with the ball in his hands. Due to his size, speed, and attitude many have compared him to Terrell Owens. The latter mentioned trait has caused some concern toward the end of last season and during the offseason as well for Rodgers. He has had several "run ins" with the coaching staff which have seen him absent from several team activities. Rodgers needs to mature and get his head on straight b/c we need him to be a leader and a threat at WR for opposing defenses in 2012.
Justin Hunter- (WR) Perhaps the most exciting player on the roster, Hunter showed tremendous ability before suffering a horrible season ending ACL injury a year ago against Florida. By all accounts, he seems to be rehabbing well and slowly returning to his old self again. If he can come out and be the deep threat he was at the beginning of last season, this offense could be scary next year. He has the ability to take the top off the defense in the passing game, and open up opportunities in the running game by allowing us to run against fewer stacked boxes.
Cordarrelle Patterson- (WR) A Juco newcomer in the class of 2012, Patterson arrives in Knoxville with serious hype after being named a two-time Juco All American. A great recruiting job by Hinshaw saw "CP" sign with the Vols on National Signing Day. He has the ability to come in and play right away at WR, which is an example of how good he is. For that to even be mentioned with returning starters like: Hunter and Rodgers tells you how good this kid could be here. He needs to eat/breathe/sleep with his playbook so that he can maximize his potential next season and become the (3rd Amigo) for Bray to have at his disposal.
Jacques Smith- (DE/OLB) Smith had a disappointing 2011 season. His production has not yet matched the hype surrounding him. Smith is a physical specimen and looks the part on the field. He also fits the mold of the pass rushing OLB in the 3-4 defense, so look for him to take advantage of his speed and strength coming off the edge this year. He needs to step up and be a leader on defense for us this upcoming season.
Mo Couch- (DL) Couch came on strong toward the end of last season, his first as a Vol. His attitude and commitment to the program should see him progress through the offseason and pay dividends on the field next year. Couch played DT in the 4-3 scheme, but could also be used at the DE in the 3-4. Couch could really step up and be a leader this year for the Vols defense.
Darrington Sentimore- (DL) Sentimore arrived in Knoxville as an early enrollee in the class of 2012. He has already impressed during offseason workouts and is the perfect fit for the DE position in his former and now present coach, Sal Sunseri's defensive scheme. Sentimore arrives with the ability and experience to play right away.
Izauea Lanier- (CB) Lanier saw time at CB as the season progressed last year. He is a physical corner with good speed. Hopefully he can continue to progress and challenge for the open CB spot.
Byron Moore- (S) Moore entered his first year from Juco with potential to play right away. While he contributed on special teams, he saw time sparingly on defense. Hopefully Moore can pick up the playbook so that he can "play fast" which was the knock on him last year from his coaches. Regardless, he will be a solid special teams contributor again this season.
JaWuan James- (RT) A two year starter for the Vols, James has been a solid and gained a lot of experience. This year needs to be the year he takes over and accepts a leadership position on the O-Line, so we can turn the corner from being average to good in that area. James has the size to matchup with anybody and hopefully has added strength to his game in the offseason.
Zack Fulton- (OG) Another member of this class who has seen significant playing time from his first two years on campus. He has been average and needs to take that next step this offseason. Adding strength will help him progress and earn a starting job at one of the guard positions.
Corey Miller- (DE) Miller has not lived up to the hype surrounding him coming out of high school in South Carolina. He has seen time in a reserve roll at both DE and DT in the 4-3 defense. Miller fits the mold of the DE in CSS 3-4 defense and could see time there this next year. Miller needs to produce this season, or get lost in the shuffle...
Rajon Neal- (RB/WR) Neal is one of the fastest kids on the team. Last year, he converted from RB to WR due to a lack of depth at the position and played well considering his inexperience at the position. With the additions at the WR spot in this year's recruiting class, I think Neal goes back to RB b/c we now have lack of depth there and it's his natural position. Hopefully CJG can coach him up and get him to hold onto to the ball b/c this kid is dangerous and a threat to break one at anytime.
James Stone- (OG/C) The left handed snap experiment is hopefully over in Knoxville. Stone saw action all over the interior line last year b/c of his talent. He is more suited as an OG and that is where he will likely settle in this year on the O-Line. A knock on Stone has been his lack of strength, so hopefully CRM has made that a point this offseason.
Alex Bullard- (OC) A transfer from Notre Dame, Bullard came in and saw starting time at both OG and OC. With an offseason to learn the playbook and the position of OC, I see Bullard being much improved as the Vols start the 2012 campaign.
Daniel McCullers- (NG) Let's be honest, this is the biggest guy Tennessee has ever had. Mt. McCullers will be a staple of the 3-4 defense as he will be the NG and run stuffer in the middle. This guy has pass rushing ability b/c he is agile for his size. His strength numbers are off the chart (like Richardson) which will allow him to see the field early and be a force in the middle.
Sapp/Probst- (LB) Both will be used on special teams, but will be reserves on defense. Not to knock either of these guys, but they are not SEC LB.
