2011 is the year

only thing it's fair to expect from a team of freshmen and sophomores is inconsistency. I'll be pleased if the moments of brilliance are truly brilliant and they work to minimize the bone headed errors throughout the season. talent without experience is erratic. Talent plus experience equals consistently good results. the breaks could go our way this year, and we could surprise some people, but it's not fair to expect it.

I think it's more unfair to
Not expect it. They work their ass off

i'm just sick of seeing 2012 get all the optimism. I wouldn't have much enthusiasm if I was just looking past 2011 into the next year. Let's do it this year VOLS!

Also, Tauren Poole will get the 2,000 record, Bray will have 4,000 passing, Hunter will have 15 TD's, Dooley will cure cancer. Why not keep it going, I will win the powerball and get to have sex with Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Erin Andrews and Katy Perry all on the same day and if I have the stamina, all at the same time.

He even said this is year one.

I hope some of these folks claiming that this is the year aren't going to be booing, and calling for our staffs head when we drop a dew games and end up 8-4, or 7-5. There is nothing wrong with thinking this is the year even though it clearly isn't. Everyone will have different expectations- I get that.

Im fine with 7-5 or 8-4 as long as we get a win or two against our big rivals.fla,ga,bama.....

Let's put it this way:

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

You know an inexperienced player is going to make mistakes. It just happens. That's okay, because...

2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.

...we're very athletic, and we have explosive players who can capitalize on game breaks when they happen to go our way. However...

3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.

...we are young and, a great number of our players have not faced serious SEC competition; certainly not on a regular basis. It's easy for young, inexperienced players to become discouraged or fatigued. Fortunately we have good solid coaching, but it takes a while to internalize this message and to prepare your body to turn up the intensity while keeping a level head and remembering your fundamentals. With luck, our players will be mature beyond their years and our coaches will say just the right things.

4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.

One area where we will have more experience than last year is our O-line, right? We can expect improvement here and, with hard, consistent effort, better results.

5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.

Here, our youthful exuberance and improved size and athleticism may well help us.

6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.

We saw some improvement in our kick coverage throughout last season, and I would expect that to continue.

7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

Here, youth, inexperience and a relative lack of depth still hurts us. I think we can expect each of our players to give his all for Tennessee on every down, but you know that several of your opponents will often have more bodies to throw at problems like fatigue than you. Moreover, teams like Alabama will have depth with experience.

I think our guys are going to do a lot of great things this season, and, if we play smart, we should be competitive in every game. As a fan, however, I'm prepared to cut these kids some slack when they make the occasional mistake, provided they don't quit and they keep learning and improving. Some of these starters will be on the team for three years after this one. They need to learn how to win games, yes. But they also need to be given the opportunity to mature into juniors and seniors without burning out because an unrealistic fan base demanded too much. IMHO, we spectatorVols need to be mindful that, in a healthy program, these kids would not be expected to carry the program on their shoulders for a year or two. I just hope everyone remains positive and continues to encourage these young Vols, regardless of the immediate results. They're going to work hard and improve, but they'll be more willing if we keep it positive.

Just my $0.02.

Sorry about the long post.

I am like a couple others here, I am feeling 9 wins this season as well.
I feel the first 4 and the last four have a great chance of being all VOLS, with an upset in mid season.

please, make it so!

To expect 9 wins out of this team, I think, is not a far-fetched as everyone else believes. We have what seems to be enough talent the only question is how many mistakes will we make. And yes freshmen and sophomores are more prone to making mistakes but that doesn't mean just because they are freshmen and sophomores that they will.

They will make mistakes, but how they handle then is the question and difference in the game. I too think they could win 9 games. I feel they could beat Florida this year, but I felt that way the last two years. All I know is I'm excited no matter how many they win.

GOOOOOOOOOO VOLS!!!!:rock:

I wouldn't consider myself a true fan if I didn't think UT was going to win most if not all of their games at the beginning of each year. I still have high hopes each year and I don't care about being realistic

I consider myself a true fan but saying we win 9+ is crazy talk. Our schedule is brutal.

@Florida
Georgia
LSU
@Bama
South Carolina
@Arkansas

We will be an underdog in all these games but to get to 9 wins we have to win 3 of them and not slip up to Cincy, Kentucky or Vandy... Could it happen? Sure, but the chances are slim. I think winning 2 of these games would be great. Get to 8 wins and we have a lot of offseason hype to look forward to in 2012. Get to 7 wins and we will be preseason top 20.

We are underdogs in these pre-season. Some of these will change.
