Let's put it this way:
1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
You know an inexperienced player is going to make mistakes. It just happens. That's okay, because...
2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
...we're very athletic, and we have explosive players who can capitalize on game breaks when they happen to go our way. However...
3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
...we are young and, a great number of our players have not faced serious SEC competition; certainly not on a regular basis. It's easy for young, inexperienced players to become discouraged or fatigued. Fortunately we have good solid coaching, but it takes a while to internalize this message and to prepare your body to turn up the intensity while keeping a level head and remembering your fundamentals. With luck, our players will be mature beyond their years and our coaches will say just the right things.
4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
One area where we will have more experience than last year is our O-line, right? We can expect improvement here and, with hard, consistent effort, better results.
5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
Here, our youthful exuberance and improved size and athleticism may well help us.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
We saw some improvement in our kick coverage throughout last season, and I would expect that to continue.
7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.
Here, youth, inexperience and a relative lack of depth still hurts us. I think we can expect each of our players to give his all for Tennessee on every down, but you know that several of your opponents will often have more bodies to throw at problems like fatigue than you. Moreover, teams like Alabama will have depth with experience.
I think our guys are going to do a lot of great things this season, and, if we play smart, we should be competitive in every game. As a fan, however, I'm prepared to cut these kids some slack when they make the occasional mistake, provided they don't quit and they keep learning and improving. Some of these starters will be on the team for three years after this one. They need to learn how to win games, yes. But they also need to be given the opportunity to mature into juniors and seniors without burning out because an unrealistic fan base demanded too much. IMHO, we spectatorVols need to be mindful that, in a healthy program, these kids would not be expected to carry the program on their shoulders for a year or two. I just hope everyone remains positive and continues to encourage these young Vols, regardless of the immediate results. They're going to work hard and improve, but they'll be more willing if we keep it positive.
Just my $0.02.
Sorry about the long post.
