It will be an open competition but Bray will end up starting imo. He's the most talented QB we have and ultimately gives us the best chance to win.

If NS is the best we have entering the season, JTFC are we in trouble.

Dooley has pointed out that he is all about building for the future, so with that said my thoughts are that it should play out this way.
-Nick Stephens/ Matt Simms (competition loser is the backup)
-Nick Lamaison 3rd string (if he stays)
-Tyler Bray and Nash Nance (redshirt/ emergency backups)

The reason I think this way is because of Bray's size and the shallow depth chart on the O-line (this could spell disaster and shattered confidence....amoung other things). Nance is taken out of the competition for starter because I believe he is a project (with potential) more than anything.
If Lamaison doesn't stay then move Nance to 3rd string, Bray is our QB of the future and he should be given the best shot to succeed, I just don't think being thrown in the SEC fire as an undersized freshman is his BEST SHOT at success. Bray coming in to 2011 with a year in the system and the gym should give him all the tools needed for a great college career.

I think no one has seen any of these guys other than stephens take a snap in even an orange and white game yet. The only qb we have seen(stephens) we wished we hadn't. We don't know what type of offense we are going to run. There is virtually nothing to base an opinion on yet. Any discussion has so little basis in fact that it's mere conjecture.

I agree that it's gonna be stephens. With our inexperienced line the last thing we need to do is destroy Bray's confidence.

I agree..just depends on how long it takes him to bulk up and adjust to the speed..would be best if stevens didn't give him a chance to take over.

Tyler Bray baby!!! The second coming!!!

Just kidding....but in all seriousness, i think Bray and Nance will both redshirt. Nick Stephens starts with Matt Simms as his back-up, and Lamaison in emergency duty(3rd string piner). 2011, i see Tyler Bray beginning a 3 or 4 year memorable career as a vol with Nash Nance serving as his back-up for the major portion of it.

That would be a prefect scenario if possible. Bray is the poster boy for a redshirt. Might not be able to out of neccessity though

I don't know, after seeing the transformation of Crompton this past year, who knows how well stephens might do. Either way, with such an inexperienced offensive line, we're better served starting the guy who's only gonna be around for a year. I'd certainly hate to throw Bray out to the wolves this early in his career. But if nothing else, let stephens start the first 3 or 4 games just to see how the line will hold up.

I have a feeling that we are going to be a running team first anyways which would be friendly to Bray. I say put the darn kid in there and let him begin his journey! Go Vols!

Nick Stephens has come a long way.

Simms is the only other guy we have on the roster that is a legitimate candidate for the starting position. Bray is nowhere near ready. Not just his weight either. He is a raw prospect.

I hope you are right Ben. I really do.

The first few games don't so us any favors though. At least they are at home.

NS has a straight up laser beam and he has all of the physical tools to succeed in the SEC. Not to mention he has the most experience having been under chaney for a year. This is a no brainer.

It's going to be a rough year all around, Geoff. QB is not going to be our biggest concern.

I think that whoever finishes up spring practice with the most crompfidence will probably go on to be the starter. The crompetition is definitely there this year for the starting position.
