I understand that Tennessee is going through a rough patch in it’s storied history but I have to say, I like where we are headed. With that said, I also think that the stories of the Volunteers demise has been greatly exaggerated. You see, there are a couple of things one must take into consideration before pronouncing this season a complete wash or waste of time.
First, lets look at the coaching staff. I believe that we have one of the top staffs in the SEC, look at the elimination of the two-a-days. People can look at that as being soft, I would say it is brilliant. If you put the entire team together on one field, it limits the attention to detail you can have with the younger players. It does not allow for you to truly find the best 22 to put on the field. With the current practice set-up, I truly believe that our coaches will have a much greater impact on all players and will be able find the best 22 to put on the field. There are other things that make me excited about this staff, such as Wilcox’s experience with Oregon. Lets not forget what his defense did to Oregon last year, and now that they have lost Massoli, I see our defense being able to have success. They teams we will struggle against will be big physical teams that run out of a standard formation. We do not have the size and depth to compete for an entire game. Teams let try to spread us out, we will be able to compete against because we have the athletes and they will be in the right place and will be disciplined.
Second, I like the way our schedule shapes up.
Tennessee Martin @ Home 42-12 Win (Slow starting offense, defense shows muscle, nice opener)
Oregon @ Home 24-14 Win (No Massoli, Wilcox experience, On Rocky Top, nice win)
Florida @ Home 24-17 Lost (No Tebow, No Charlie Strong, On Rocky Top, much closer)
UAB @ Home 38-10 Win (Healing up from last two games, nice win to get to 3-1)
@ LSU 20-13 Lose (LSU finally rides the running game and gets a close win)
@ Georgia 20-17 Win (QB play is a wash, defense goes to use, Poole has big game)
Alabama @ Home 28-10 Lose (Alabama too strong, score two late TD’s)
@ South Carolina 31-17 Lose (Healing from last game, Spurrier gets revenge for last year)
@ Memphis 38-14 Win (Nice road win)
Mississippi @ Home 27-13 Win (More talent, On Rocky Top, nice win)
@ Vanderbilt 42-10 Wn (More Talent, Vandy hurting bad)
Kentucky @ Home 28-24 Win (WAR, WAR, WAR, but Kentucky is still Kentucky)
Overall Record 8-4 (4-4) SEC East 3rd Place
Chick-Fil-A Bowl against Miami 24-17 Win (Dooley get bowl win in his backyard)
Vols finish 9-4 and ranked somewhere around #20.
Lets look at the team.
QB: Simms will play within the system and Bray will get ready for 2011 (Grade C+)
RB: I believe Poole will finish with break the 1,000 mark and with Oku and Neal adding depth (Grade B)
TE: Stocker will be All SEC and will go in the first round of the draft, no depth hurts (Grade B+)
OL: By the 4th Qrt. of the Oregon game, you will know the first and second string (Grade B-)
DL: Ends will be solid and may be best overall in the SEC, no depth at Tackle hurts (Grade B-)
LB: Solid group that will settle by mid-season, not overwhelming but solid (Grade B)
S: Lots of questions but Jackson will add stability (Grade C)
CB: Lots of questions but I believe there is talent that will rise to the top (Grade C)
Special Teams: I look for the best we have had in some years (Grade B+)
Coaching: Dooley is a task master and with a young team, it is needed. Wilcox is the Dick Labeau of college football. Chaney will play close to the vest but will still give Milton, Rodgers, and Hunter their opportunity shine.

You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one. GATA VOLS!!!!!

That was a decent read, but I think a bit too optimistic.

I don't disagree with a lot of what you said though, but I would like to see a practice in full pads first and maybe even a game until I can really give an outlook.

Good read. Anxious for the first game! Quick question off topic thread: Looking to buy season tickets, found a pair in Sec A Row 62, seats 28 and 29 (in the dry) for $730! Is section A good seating?

good optomistic view, don't think you are right, hope you are though. i feel a 6-6 record with a bowl loss.

The season's success really boils down to a couple of things:

  1. How quickly the young and inexperienced o-line develops and performs effectively as a unit, both with regard to pass protection and run blocking.
  2. Injuries to our starting o-line, DTs and starting QB. Serious injury to Schoefield, D thomas, Hughes, or Sims would be devastating.
  3. Sims playing within himself, and overall, our offense limiting miscues and turnovers. I have a feeling that our points could really come at a premium this year... can't stop ourselves.
  4. Playing smarter. Basically, against over half of our schedule, we will have to player smarter with less mistakes, penalties, turnovers, etc. in order to have a chance at victory.

SC will beat us, but the FL thing isn't as crazy as it sounds.

Also, no way would we beat Miami this year.

You do realize florida is better than miami, right?

If you can beat florida, you can beat miami

If you don't care to be between the 10 yard line and the endzone. But look at it this way. you are there. That is a BIG positive.

I expect the the duck game to be tough. A win will be great. Seems to be a lot better team than UCLA brought in here last year, and that one still bothers me.
Could really get a lot of momentum if we pull it off. It sets the stage for a better type of year than some expect if we win that game.
Can't wait!
GBO!

optomistic but possible. I'd say the GA game is the biggest question mark of the wins you gave TN. 9-4 would be a great year for CDD this season

Assuming we go 9-4 is assuming everything breaks our way and that we excel every week, while our opponents don't excel. I'm not sure you can project an entire season for the Vols because there is a HUGE talent gap between the first team and second team at most positions. If we stay healthy I am optimistic, if we start getting injured I am terribly nervous!

There are too many variables that are uncertain to project Tennessee's record. Who knows, Matt Simms may have a monster year, or he could struggle. Tauren Poole could be all conference, or just decent. There are just so many things that could go either way!

Listen people I bleed orange like the next guy but 9 wins? Do you understand we will have 5 new OL guys, new QBs, new RBs, new DBs and a new coaching staff, lost the best DB in the country a top 15 draft pick DT, 2nd round RB that tore up the SEC and we are going to go UP by not one but 2 wins. People if DD can pull 7 wins he is coach of the year in the SEC and 9....name a street after him and sign him to a 10 year extension!!!!!!!

Thats another point, have you seen Matt Simm's stats? In JUCO his TD/INT stats were 17/12...in JUCO. People 9 wins is ridiculous....I am hoping for 7....

Shoot, I'd take 6-6 plus a bowl.... and I would really hope we win the bowl that takes a 6-6 team.

Unless things have changed, a slew of the opponent's fans will be in front of you. Not too bad except when the Tater Diggers come up.
