Well, the grades are still dead wrong. No way the OLine is better or Bray this year is better than Crompton last year.

At the beginning of the year I agree, but this line barring major injuries has the potential to be an overall better unit than last years. Just depends on how quickly they can come together as a unit.

It's his opinion....no matter how out there it is, you don't have to agree with it, which I don't.....maybe he just really likes orange kool-aid

I've seen some dumb threads in my time on VolNation, but this one might be #1.

Maybe a top 25, but it could be worse. It has been worse. It will be worse.

I have a very strong feeling that we will be seeing some epic threads come October and beyond.

So, with that being said: 2009 is factual and 2010 is me speculating. I really believe the poster was wanting extensive thoughts, not bashing. So, here we go:

Jones 7 Jones 8.5
Moore 6.5 Moore 8
Stocker 8.5 Stocker 9.5
O-Line 8 O-Line 7
D-End 7.5 D-End 9
D-Tackle 8 D-Tackle 7
LB's 7 LB's 8.5
CB's 7 CB's 6.5

If we thought the 2009 oline was bad... Wait until 2010. I love the Vols, but we are in for a rough year. Can't win in the SEC without a good oline.

I am pretty sure one of Rogers/Milton/Hunter will be a starter a few games in. Why is everyone rating Moore higher he has been dropping everything. Not saying just one drop in bowl...O&W game and practice. Jones is likely to sprain his ankle getting out of bed. Any coach will play the younger guys if they are about even. I agree Moore is pretty awesome when he catches the ball but the drop in the bowl game seems to be on replay in his mind.

My 2 cents on this is...

Safety position is obviously a major drop. I dont think we really understand how good Berry was.

LBs will be improved and I think Dline overall will be improved.

CBs are a ?...they could suck they could be awesome no way to tell at this point.

Overall D likely is about the same maybe if Wilcox is a true wizard it is better.

Oline is about even to last year and it was bad last year. It is talented but young rather then lacking talent with experience. TE position is really good if one guy stays healthy if not we are ******.

QB position is a major drop off from how Crompton played last year. He gets a B+ for the year and we are looking wishfully at some C play at QB.

RBs are a wash Poole seems as good as Hardesty maybe better from what I saw of him catching the ball. Neal should be the real deal and Oku has been hitting the gym hard. If Brown is back, in shape and healthy we are better here.

WRs may be the only improved position on O and a QB has to get them the ball so...O will suffer in first half of season...I sense Oline will be much better second half and thus QB will look better sucks to be USCe then as we may finally put the last nail in Spurrier's career which may make the season worth the painful moments.

How can you grade people who have not taken a significant snap in SEC football? Bray, Simms, Poole, every incoming freshman, and all o-linemen deserve a shot to play first. Not after the UT-Martin game, and not after the Florida game either. After this season grade them, not now. This time last year we had the worst QB in the SEC, and an o-line with a converted tight end, and 2 walk ons, and a running back who hadn't proven himself. From my view point I like where we are this off season compared to last.

guys yall have to remember that yall sent Crompton death threats before the second half of last year. He was one of the worst college QBs I have ever seen until the UGA game.

That's a whole lot better than the OP.

I'd agree except: we'll miss Hardesty, big time. The man was an absolute beast last year. We might have someone fill Brown's season, but nobody will touch Hardesty's play last year.

The big drop off at RB and QB will make our O look pathetic. The line will hurt again this year, as you stated.

The D will not be as good either and they're going to get stuck on the field way too much. That will take its toll on the scoreboard.

The team will not really get that much better as the season progresses, but the competition gets worse towards the end. Look for the Vols to recover from a 2-6 start to end the regular season either 5-7 or 6-6.

We're going to get thumped by UF, UGA, and Bama this time around. We'll know what kind of character our team has. We already know we don't have the talent to hang with them.

Yea, we got it the first time you posted it

Winning the SEC, or the division isn't even in the thought process for this year. Going better than .500 is the goal in my eyes.

Anybody know what the combined number of games played by last years O-line was going in to the season as compared to this years?

I think it will be interesting to see. I agree that we will struggle with the Oline, but am not convinced that last year's line was that much better.

Gotta love the Sullins twins work ethic and story, but they were 260 lb former walkons who never played a down in a game at this point last year. I think we are at the very least dead even for those two spots, but more likely better. At least we have more size/strength/raw ability. For instance, Gooch is a 300 lb'er with wrestling bkgnd and has played center a couple years at JC. I'll take that over a 260 lb former w/o with no experience.

We clearly give up some at a few of the other positions, granted. But, I'm not sure that JJ is a downgrade from Douglas. Neither ever played an SEC down at tackle, but James has better size (although Douglas had practiced at tight end in college at this point. Each had a spring at tackle).

I think we'll start at maybe 90% of where we started last year. But last year's unit gelled pretty well and played well relative to their potential. I think it's possible that this year's could be just as good, but it is certainly possible that they won't.

I think we are at a similar postion at QB. I'm a big fan of Crompton for the last 5 games, etc., but he was really bad the first 5 or so. I think we will likely be better for the first five and not as good for the last five (think he had better physical skills/development, but terrible decision-making ability early on).

Upshot is that both OL and QB are huge unknowns that could go either way. But I don't think we're significantly different than last year at this point for them.

I don't even slightly follow the logic of thinking we're better than we were a year ago. Even Kiffin was preparing for 10 to be a tougher year.

Maybe it's just my untrained football eye but personally i thought our secondary last season was absolutely awful. They just looked like they knew nothing about what their assignment was.

I know we had some stat like lowest throwing touchdowns allowed or something, but I also believe that was in-part due to the fact that we couldn't stop anyone from running it in.

What stood out to me in the spring football game (yes i know its spring so i'm trying not to draw too many conclusions) was that our defensive backs were playing fast and aggressive and very clearly knew where to go. I feel like the defensive back unit as a whole, despite losing Berry, will be a lot better especially in pass coverage and interceptions.

We'll miss Eric Berry more than any other player who left. After Berry, we'll miss Hardesty and Crompton.

It will be ugly. The sooner folks realize that the less painful it will be. I agree with the .500 goal for this team and on November 1, that will likely require winning out. I'm not sure a demoralized team can do that, so it's a fantastic goal for this team.

I have no doubt that we will miss Hardesty, but I think we can get a 1000 yards out of Poole this year. I also think we are going to miss Dan Williams more than people think.
