2008 Hoops Big Board: Post Targets

Zeller picked up an UNC offer prior to the TOC in which he was fantastic and led his team to the title. Close to 7'2'' now, he runs the floor as good as any 7 footer around and has range out to 3 point land. The Vols are continuing to recruit despite the Jurich committment because they believe he can play the 4.

Here's what one observer noted:

Tyler Zeller

The most intriguing player at this tournament. There is no way a 7-2 or so (I thought his height was very close to being legitimate) kid should be able to run, shoot, handle, finish and rebound like this kid can. I felt very much like he was a 6-4 small forward trapped in a 7-2 kid's body and I had no idea he would be as good as he was before seeing him at this tournament.

I've not sure I've seen anyone over 7-0 run like this guy can. He was almost as fast as anyone I watched play in getting down the court to finish a break opportunity with a dunk. His ability in that area I rate as being deluxe. Again and again and again and again he was able to beat everyone down the floor to take advantage of an easy scoring opportunity.

He can shoot the ball well out to the three point line. He has great hands and is flawless at catching the ball. He can handle the ball well enough to do whatever he wants for the most part. His footwork is amazing for a kid his size. He can score on the block. He can make the necessary pass you would hope your big players can from the high post or from out on the floor.

Never takes a play off. Is always aggressive. Plays hard defensively even though he is slight of frame still. He's a good rebounder and keeps after it, which is effective combined with the reach he has. He's not going to be able to guard small forwards but despite that he's not a liability defensively, either.

Very smart on court. Never forces anything.

Guess I should stop complimenting his game but he was just amazing to watch play. That I put Delvon at the same level as he just goes to show you how much I of an impression Roe's great overall, stat-stuffing results were as Zeller was out of this world in this tournament.

I don't know if we make Zeller's top 5, but he is definitely a threat to take Singleton's scholly if Chris doesn't commit.

"Right now, in no order, it's Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Iowa, Tennessee, Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina."

Then add 2 of Elliot Williams(6'4" combo guard), Iman Shumpert(6'4" combo guard), Darius Miller(6'6" wing). Of course, Singleton is 6'9" so he isn't tiny.

Zeller is a player, but I think he stays in the state of Indiana. At first, I thought that the commitment of Jurick would make Zeller a non-factor, but he's more of a 4 than a 5. He would be a great fit for CBP's system. I think Bruce is putting the heat on Zeller to try and bait Singleton to commit early. I've been wanting UT to sing Singleton since last year, but I wouldn't be mad if we picked up Zeller instead/too.

At this point I think Zeller is a better player.

I'd be hesitant to use the term 'defensive presence' and Dirk Nowitzki in the same breath.

That would make 5 scholarships including Jurick. I thought we only had 4.

to bad he sucks

That's a false statement. He's still around 6'10" and pushing 200 pounds. Even if he did grow to be 7' (which he hasn't), that doesn't automatically give him 20 pounds. :good!:

You are right that none of this matters because UT is going to land Philip Jurick... a much better prospect.

YouTube - Tyler Zeller vs. Jasper

If Zeller adds some wieght i can see him being a special player

Good call - although he didn't need the weight.

I'm not going to be able to convince you that Zeller would be a waste of a scholarship. Just watch him in college, especially if he goes to a high-major program. Then you'll see what I'm talking about.

His brother, Luke, was much more highly-regarded back in 2005. He went to Notre Dame, and hasn't done jack. They play for Washington HS in southern Indiana, and I know from experience the competition they're up against. Trust me, they are both overrated.

Luke average 3.4 ppg and 3.1 rpg as a freshman. As a sophomore, he averaged 3.8 ppg and 2.2 rpg. His brother, Tyler, is just a slimmer and less physical version of Luke.
