2000 vs gators

worst part of the game was Randy Sanders trying a toss sweep on our last drive....after the same ****ing play failed the previous year

Almost like he was insisting it was the right call in 1999

I'll never forget his quote after that game (defending his dumbass call). "I might not know much about football, but I know you don't throw deep over the middle late"

Well...maybe if its fourth down,huh?

What a ****ing dumbass that guy was.

But hey, he could chew baccy with the best of em. So I guess he has that going for him.

We probably should have taken a few shots down the field to try and loosen them up, but they had zero confidence in AJ throwing the ball more than 5 yards.

1st half yardage was something like 225-80 in favor of the Vols.... but field goals.

IMO, there was a key moment in this game no one mentions.

When UT got the ball back around mid-field with a little over 4 mins to go, UT ran Henry to the left side for a 1st down. However, there was a penalty on UT (illegal motion, shift or something). That made it 1st & 15 but it also stopped the clock. Had that penalty not occurred, the clock would've kept moving after the chains were re-set. UF would've been force to use their TO's sooner.

We all know what happens after that, UT failed to pick up the 1st down and was forced to punt. Leaverton's punt took a UT roll to the 9.

And Suggs threw a quick hitter that was basically a lateral that went for a pick 6. I guess that wasn’t safe either .

I find it strange that Clausen hasn't gotten as much credit as he deserved for his entire career at UT. He started 44 games - guided UT to a 14-1 record on the road - And a 34-10 overall record......

Because he lost at least 7 games at home (not counting his bowl losses)? Clausen gets plenty of credit around here. Clausen had the benefit of some great playmakers around him in 2001, and after that we weren’t as good. Stallworth, Witten, Stephens, and Kelly “The Future” Washington made him look like a sure fire 1st round pick after his sophomore season, and then ended up not even getting drafted.

Plus, he did irk some people with his mouth. I remember specifically when he missed the UGA game his junior year. James Banks performed somewhat admirably after Leak looked lost and we kept it close, but ultimately lost. After that, Clausen came out and said,” I could’ve beaten them with one arm tied behind my back if I hadn’t been hurt.”

So he goes out next season against UGA, throws 3 picks and we lose 13-31 or something close to that. Then there was his debacle against Florida his junior year where we got blown out by a Ron Zook coached team. Then people overrate his win against a slightly above average Miami team that underperformed expectations. He also got blown out 30-3 by an average Maryland team in 2003 and lost to an average Clemson team in 2004.

I didn’t post this to put the guy down or diminish what he did as QB here, but let’s give his wonderful road record and the awesome 2001 win against Florida some context as to why he’s not even more celebrated.

Everyone has favorite moments and remembers their favorite QB, while overlooking their faults. Andy Kelly was an INT machine and finished his career throwing more picks than TDs. Shuler was untapped potential. Manning threw 4 picks against FLA his junior year. Martin wasn’t that accurate.

They all had faults and like Clausen, were still great QBs who finished their careers with winning records.

Where old, festered wounds come to get recalled and scraped raw again. So much Scots-Irish... so little healing and moving ahead.
I'm a glutton for punishment, so part of me enjoys talking about these old games. Even ones we lost.

There's so little healing because there have been so few positive events that have occurred. For every Jauan Jennings Hail Mary catch, there are 3 Pig Howards fumbling through the end zone in OT. I think we have more coaching changes than big wins over the last 13+ years.

This.

Also people act like we automatically win if that catch is correctly called incomplete, but it was only 2nd down and goal from the 3 and they were only down a FG.

Exactly and Florida scored the play before the controversial call and it was called back for illegal procedure. I know the SEC official who threw the flag.

Clausen lost five games at home, not seven.
2001 UGA
2002 Florida
2002 Alabama
2002 Miami
2003 UGA

You are fake news. Clausen never said that quote and only morons and UGa fans say he did. Clausen is easily the 2nd best QB at UT when you account for wins, road wins, wins over big names, stats and leadership. It was not his fault he was injured most of 2002 even playing with broken collarbone nor was it his fault they lost to LSU in the SEC title game. Also an 11 win Maryland team wasn’t average and that Miami team wasn’t above average. Jesus
