2-Top 25(22) final rankings in a row!!!!!

OK JacketVol...the next official game is the Vols vs Jackets. Are you sporting some sort of "House Divided" attire to the game?

More important for UT and Jones to win. Go Vols! My money goes to UT as well at this point so there you go. Always thought if they played during a year then I would know who it would benefit the most. This game at the beginning afforded no such luxury.

You're gonna drive yourself crazier if you can't let it go sometimes, but keep fighting it, maybe you'll win.

You guys put far to much emotional stock into what is said on here if you believe that is true. Man, not a single thing said on here has a single tiny bit of effect on my mood or emotional state.

I've expressed this theory before and I really believe it. He's an upper Midwest coach. The SEC is a very different environment, not just in on the field performance, but in history. Every game is critical in the SEC...of course in reference to the division race, but also in "bragging rights" and history. We weigh ourselves in the SEC against the rest of the SEC. Being able to say we're second only to Bama in Championships, or conference wins historically...that matters almost as much as where we finished the season. Nobidy wants to lose anymore ground historically. I really don't believe Butch grasps or believes that. He really can't be expected to coming from his background. His remarks about 8 wins being something to be applauded, or three bowls in a row being special....that shows it to me.

It doesn't cause the losses, but it can explain a lack of urgency, and why he looks at this fanbase as unreasonable.

Just my opinion.

Understood. But I want to think he thinks he's done well and we should be more appreciative because where we've been. That's fair. The problem(s) that I do see with this is I'm not sure that's what he thinks, and you could be right, but I don't know that you are ....and I want to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The other is his comment about it taking 6-7 years to build a championship team. I've been clear many times that I was never happy with his hiring but That alone would have kept me from hiring him if I'd known. This is why I still support him tho. 2017 is year 5. With the way the SECe has been and will be next year, he should have no problem wining the east......1 year away from his "championship " team. If 2017 turns out to be like this one or less, I'm done with him. We've already invested 4 years in him, I'm fine with one more, no matter what the Administration looks like at the end of the season. F it.

I really hope he proves my doubts wrong.

Weren't we 21 going into that game? So we dominated a decent Nebraska team and we drop a spot? Seems right when you consider we started the season #9, went 5-0, then dropped to #17.

I understand your desire to give him the benefit of the doubt...and respect it. Some of us do not feel the same. I was careful to couch my point as my opinion.

He'll get another year no matter what...Institutional malfeasance has seen to that. We'll see if he can do anything with it. Likely he'll struggle to reach his 8.7 wpy average this time around. Too bad he didn't do it this year... it would have given him a little of equity to trade on going forward.

nobody remembers or cares what the ranking is if you don't play for all the marbles.. it's all about the playoff now the top four teams and no one else matters

Maybe you dont care but some of us are proud of the team for finishing in the top 25 again. I know I certainly am.

All I can add regarding my giving him the benefit of doubt is, it ain't been easy.

The rest I agree.

All the while everyone ignored the head coach of the Vols mentioning over and over that all the preseason hype was unnecessary and unwarranted and to basically pump the brakes just a bit........hahahaha at "experts"

Well when you're ranked 9th in polls...

Finishing near the bottom with a sweet MCB "championship" is AWESOME!!!!

He told us it will take about 6 years.......this was year 4
No he didn't. He said it usually takes about 6 years to build the competitive depth needed to continuously compete at a championship level.

Not "it'll be 6 years before we win a championship".

This is true. East was stronger this year from top to bottom.
the only reason that's remotely close to being true is because we crapped the bed and gave USCe and Vandy wins they by all rights, should have lost.

we win those two games, as one is perfectly reasonable to expect, we stand alone at 10-2, and are looking down at a division we would have won by 2 games, and undefeated in the East.

the east was bad. it was bad 2 years ago, and it's been bad for the better part of the last 5-6 years.

Not true at all. That narrative just holds absolutely no water. I keep hearing this line of thinking from the Pro-Butch faction and I just shake my head. We love the team, and long for leadership that we feel is worthy of the opportunity. That's all. Top 20-25, with this team, in this year, is underachievement. It was right there....and the opportunity was squandered. It's an achievement after the last 8-10, but an underachievement based upon the facts of the season.

yep, each season has it's own context.

I'd love to be able to get past the Nega vs Posi, Butch vs Fahr Butch dynamic here. The real problem is the long standing institutional issues at the University and with the AD. WE should be able to agree on that, but we can't. Some people view anything related to UT as infallible and refuse to question their direction, and focus, and intent.

Until that's fixed, the football program won't be fixed. And so the arguments continue.

+2

I can't agree w/ your first statement...not many, if any, coaches could have taken those first 2 rosters and beat AU or UM those years....hell, Saban and UA didn't either.

Ark and TAMU....probably should/could have....at least one of 'em.

I just don't think there are that many "great" coaches in the game today. There's Saban, Meyer....maybe Peterson, who all seem to drop a game they shouldn't, and the rest are lumped in the bulk that is the middle. CBJ probably isn't in the top of that middle, but don't think he's at the bottom either.

yep. average.

The team and the staff need to put the past in the past and work to improve. We have come a good ways since the Dooley debacle. Jones and staff have made some good decisions and not so good, but we have improved overall. We still aren't there but he deserves at least another year to see if he can get us headed back in the right direction. If he can learn from the mistakes and elevate the staff he has a shot to do it, IMHO. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

Congrats to the Vols for finishing the final college football top 25 standings 2 years in a row! Settling at or around the top 22 in AP and Playoff rankings!

When was the last time a Vols football squad had 2 consecutive top 25 finishes?

Still doesn't take the burn away from the USCjr and Vandie loses. But the big bowl win capped of a relatively successful season.

***I had this team finishing with 8/9 total wins for 2016/bowl***

Anyone who actually believed this team was an SEC Champ caliber team and Playoff team was just hittin the pipe......

A dozen less injuries to our starters and bama might have been blowin our pipe!

Oh really?

Just keep lowering the bar!

Justification for the results of this season is the equivalent of a parent bragging to all their friends that their child is in all advanced (AP) classes then telling those same friends how happy you are that the child merely passed.

My bar fell when JRM and Cam went out.
