I wish we could have done better, and thought this was our year, but definitely better than we've been in a long long time.

Everyone thought Dabo sucked a few years in. Let's see how we do with the new staff.

We had the most talented roster we've had in a decade to go along with the weakest sece in that same time frame. We should demand more. It's all about coaching. I don't care if it sets us back a year or 2...go big or go home. We have to throw a bunch of money at an elite coach. Or we'll have to become like the op. Being thrilled to death to not play in Atlanta and ending the season ranked 20th. Smh

Yep...Those are Iowa type expectations. Yay.

Congrats to the Vols for finishing the final college football top 25 standings 2 years in a row! Settling at or around the top 22 in AP and Playoff rankings!

When was the last time a Vols football squad had 2 consecutive top 25 finishes?

Still doesn't take the burn away from the USCjr and Vandie loses. But the big bowl win capped of a relatively successful season.

***I had this team finishing with 8/9 total wins for 2016/bowl***

Anyone who actually believed this team was an SEC Champ caliber team and Playoff team was just hittin the pipe......

Having faith in CBJ yes...but we had the roster to win the East.....twice in a row

The "we could have lost to Florida or UGA" argument is growing old. Florida had a good defense, but a horrible offense. You can't really argue they had more talent than us, and I think the scoreboard reflected it in that case. Georgia could have been a legit loss. In the end, we got lucky. But we also shouldn't have had our defense taken to school by a true freshman QB.

The defense is why UT is 9-4. Mainly because of injuries..............

Admit it - some of you are just upset that Tennessee is ranked in the final poll. Doesn't help your "sky is falling" "nothing is good" agenda.

When you're a preseason contender being ranked in final 25 isn't much to hang your hat on. Last year's ranking offered much more enthusiasm than this one.

Preseason I had 8-9 wins as likely. I never really thought the SEC East would happen for us early on, but there is no denying that an opportunity was squandered. No, I never thought we were that good this year....but you cannot play your way into contention by beating your division rivals, then mess the bed against the conference cellar dwellers. That is where the heartburn comes from. The apparent inability of this coach to get over the hump and close becomes more becomes more concerning every year, especially in light of his career win percentage.

While this sounds logical, it just flat ignores Hurd blowing up the bench, huddle, and locker room during the USCe game; I don't believe a coach in the country could rally a team getting sh&t on by a teammate like that. Nor does it account for the historical number of injuries to the defensive depth chart by time we played Vandy.

All you guys act as if some coaches out there can wave a holy gatoraid bottle in the those should have no effect.
You know, so many 3rd stringers are suddenly going to "step up" and find the skill sets they didn't have anyway or they would have been the starters all year.

No, no, just flat ignore pretty much insurmountable conditions and play the blame game.

What football coaching demi-god could have done it? Let's hear names. You know anyone you throw out is pure speculation, but let's hear them anyway.

Not at all upset, just don't see what it proves. Let me guess, you're one of those people that's okay with teams with losing records making bowls?

We're not having this conversation if Butch's first 3 years were...

Year 1: 9-5 - Win the Division
Year 2: 6-7
Year 3: 10-4 - Win the Conference

...like Dabo's ("everyone" thought he sucked) were.

Not true at all. That narrative just holds absolutely no water. I keep hearing this line of thinking from the Pro-Butch faction and I just shake my head. We love the team, and long for leadership that we feel is worthy of the opportunity. That's all. Top 20-25, with this team, in this year, is underachievement. It was right there....and the opportunity was squandered. It's an achievement after the last 8-10, but an underachievement based upon the facts of the season.

Injuries are not an excuse. There's a reason you have back-ups. Unfortunately, our back -ups were either poorly coached or poorly evaluated.

Those who saw 8 or 9 wins in 2016, how many do you see in 2017? If the same or less, isn't that showing a lack of improvement? If more, what do you see as more favorable?

Back in 98 and living in Knoxville, I heard idiots complaining about us not beating teams by enough while winning it all. Same ones on here now complaining about two top 25 finishes. Of course, we are happy about losing to SC and Vandy and not winning the east. That is as stupid a comment as you can make. No one is happy with that but can still be happy that we finished ranked. Or , you can just be a piss ant about probably everything in life. Since I wrote this, I guess you will call me pathetic and I don't care about winning championships. WRONG. I expect more in the future but can still be happy to find out we were ranked. Better feeling at the end of the year than most the last decade. Doesn't mean I am settling but means I can enjoy this for what it is while exoecting more in the future. CBJ either wins some real titles soon or he will be gone. Doesn't mean you are an idiot to find some enjoyment in what this team did this season. The Florida and Georgia games and being in Neyland and breaking that streak while watching with my son will always bring a smile to my face. If that makes me pathetic then I will enjoy being pathetic. GBO

It's this simple....We took a step back in SEC play over the previous 9 win season. All he had to do was beat SC or Vandy....not both, just one to be able to claim improvement.

Any coaching speculation is no different than your sides wait and see on Butch. It's all speculation. But I can point to Butch's career winning average of 8.7, and his abysmal SEC record which apparently isn't getting any better.

Spin it all you want Butch. We were a top 10 team and supposed to win the East (and we blew THREE chances to do just that). Big bowl win? The MCB is akin to the special Olympics, and in fact I'd say competing in the special Olympics would be a bigger deal.

You can put all the lipstick you want on that pig but Tennessee is at best a midling team. Final rankings mean absolutely nothing unless you were in the playoff. Try again.

No improvement was made, we just had a vastly easier schedule compared to recent years.

Well it's true. Neither I, not anyone else here have any control over this situation. That doesn't preclude me from having an educated opinion on the matter.

If you listen to people on this site you will understand that players, and recruits, and coaches all read the comments in these threads. It's people like you that are the reason Tennessee can't hire a good coach and can't get better players. We have immense power here.
