Neither of these guys has any major offers, to my knowledge.

Dexter Robbins (6-1, 220) Sevier County, TN

Robbins, the 2012 District 2-AAA Defensive Player of the Year, might be one of the most explosive and aggressive linebackers I've seen in my time at the News Sentinel. The 6-1, 220-pound Robbins blows up offensive plays routinely with unmatched physicality and legit high 4.4s speed (he runs on the Sevier County relay teams during track season). He made 145 tackles (20 for loss), three sacks and an interception.

Wesley Simonton (6-1, 205) Jefferson, GA
Named Georgia's Class AA Defensive Player of the Year by the Georgia Sportswriters Association. Led Jefferson with 189 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, 26 TFL and 5 PBU as the Dragons won their first state title in school history.

Sounds good to me. If the kid from Tennessee actually has 4.4 speed at 220 pounds, that would be crazy he has no offers. We need help and speed at LB. I can only hope this staff shows some concern with LB recruiting going into next years class.

Doubt the first guy could still run 4.5 at 240-250. Which is where he'd need to be to play linebacker in the SEC. Still he should have an offer somewhere with those stats

4.4-4.5 and 220-225lbs can play LB in the SEC. I would guess our current LBs are closer to 4.7 than 4.5. I think we are going to be going to smaller LBs. 210-235 would be my guess. DZ and CG were cut loose IMO because they were a bit big for the 4-3 we are going back to. JMO

good luck finding preferred walk-ons that can play right away......

If you need LBs to play now, Juco is where you usually have to go get them. If a LB is playing early out of HS, he was rated in the top 10 at his position and turned down 20+ schools to play for you.

Chief loved and succeeded with "undersized" linebackers. In fact, there is only one on LSU's 2 deep listed over 240 lbs. We need speed at LB. I would rather someone get there and slow him down than not get there at all.

I did see where Clemson has a LB LaTeek Townsend who has decided to transfer. 4 star out of HS from SC. We had not offered him but, maybe worth a look.

Not to say that we should turn down any sort of athletes that have D1 skills but we have enough roster problems as it is. Losing three of our best offensive players as well as question marks at the running back position. Throw in our overall lack of speed as well as many deficiencies that exist on defense and the specialty positions---I think walk-on linebackers are really the least of our worries. I love Butch...but until we see what he can do there is question there as well...

All that being said I'm not too concerned with walk-on linebackers.....IMO TIFWIW

He can get away with it because he has man beasts on the line.

I've seen Dexter play the kid has a motor. I wouldn't mind seeing him walk on. I think he's closer to 5'11 then 6'1 but it's possible he has grown a little taller. Could be a good wedge buster on kickoffs just in case Palardy doesn't kick them all through the end zone. <sarc>

I, for one, would LOVE to see a return to the days when our defense could cover sideline to sideline as well as, if not better than, anyone in the entire country.

Its. Been. A. While.

There is no way a LB who runs a 4.4 at 6'1" 220 doesn't have legit offers especially with those kind of numbers and was also named the POY in his division. There's no way in heck he runs a legit 4.4. Not one LB at the combine ran a 4.4. Heck the last one that I can remember (I'm sure I'm forgetting some) running a 4.4 is Patrick Willis and he's a freak athlete.

Seems to make sense to invite some preferred walk-ons if they are TN boys who really want to be here, and I think we do this most every year, don't we?

Two Cents worth from Dexter's dad. Coach Carl Torbush, and Coach Mike Minter timed him at Liberty University on grass at a 4.53. On a track he runs in the high 4.4's. Liberty would offer him but they are not signing any LB's this year. Dexter was listed as their Number 1 LB recruit. Coach Torbush has coached many good one's in his days at UNC, Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M etc... So I place a lot of confidence in his evaluation. Dexter would love the opportunity to receive a preferred walk-on. Seem's like we had a pretty good LB a few years ago named Ryan Karl who walked on and eventually earned a scholarship. He played at 218 lbs. Not that a scholarship offer wouldn't be better but he understands he will need to prove himself.
